So, what's holding up the announcement?

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff August 1, 2008 01:32 AM

Five unresolved issues before the Sox announce Manny deal is done:

1. Sox withholding Manny’s last check until he promises to wash off all the pine tar, dirt, gum, spit and other foreign substances he used to obscure the “B” on his batting helmets.

2. Sox trying to head off threatened strike by clubhouse attendants who lived for years off the loose bills Manny left lying around his locker.

3. Dodgers have not yet agreed to acquiring Ino Guerrero, too.

4. Lawyers for Larry Lucchino and Theo Epstein still working on confidentiality agreement not to blame the other if Manny wins World Series MVP for L.A.

5. Sox still negotiating promise from Curt Schilling not to say what he really thinks of Manny.

  1. Your attempt at humor came up very short Edes. How lame. Stick with your day job. And why are you blogging at 1:32 in the morning anyway?

  1. Poor taste. For a large portion of Red Sox fans, this is not a day to yuck-yuck.

Besides, isn't this brand of sophomoric schtick reserved for the hyperbolic Boston Dirt Dogs? (I should add, the declining and irreverent and once entertaining BDD.)

Thanks Manny Ramirez for the memories, and for allowing this NYC-based Sox fan walk tall.

  1. You people who register here only to complain about Globe columnists are pathetic. Gordon isnt funny? Shaughnessy is a pompous ass? That's great, but you're all whiny jealous little girls. Lets see any of you get paid to share your moronic opinions.

  1. How about Sox waiting to get patent rights on "Curse of the ManRambino" so they can ban it before it spreads?

  1. Sorry, Gordon, but that was REALLY lame ... nice try, but do us all a favor and stick to writing straight news stories.

  1. Gordon:

You're doing a great job on the beat. Keep it up.

It comes down to this with the Sox. If Beckett was pitching like an ace -- a true ace, 14-3 or 13-4 over his 17 decisions -- Boston would lead the AL East and be in a comfortable playoff situation.

This is not deflecting attention away from Manny. IMO, he needed to go. But can we just get back to baseball analysis now. If Beckett continues to throw like Mark Buehrle, we're through.

  1. I do appreciate your sense of humor, Gordon Edes. Hate him or love him, this is a big loss in many people's hearts. Some say, "I told you so," while others say, "Why?" We can learn so much life lessons from this whole thing. And your "unresolved issues" could be a great guide line for discussion.

  1. 1) We did love Mo, but he was asking for waaaaaay too much money.

    2) No winners in the Duquette-Clemens war. Both came away looking bad, but at the time, who would have paid what Clemens was asking? Not me. A good business decision by the dour Duque that just turned out to be wrong (due to steroids, Rogah?).

    3) Nomah was a God around here and when he played, he was electric. Same business decision story though, this time by Theo. Plus Nomar wasn't exactly mister cuddly in the clubhouse, from most accounts. Seems he would have fit in better in the "25 players 25 cabs" days of Jim Rice et al, so while I was shocked Theo had the stone to trade him, I was ambivalent about it for baseball reasons (Nomar broke down more frequently than my '73 LTD) and not 1 bit upset.

    4) Manny. Manny, Manny, Manny. You were funny and talented, but really, your perspective is so messed up. Unlike the Nomar trade, I'm actually happy to see you gone. Your quote about 'enough is enough' sums it up perfectly. The real winner is this as most are saying is truly Scott Boras. Hope you don't wind up playing Mike Tyson to Boras' Don King, but then again, I don't really care if you do. That's what too much 'Manny being Manny' will do to fans.
