Sox chase Ponson from game, break 2-2 tie
NEW YORK --- The Sox have just sent Sidney Ponson (4.2 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts) from the game with two out in the fiifth after touching him for a pair of runs that broke a 2-2 tie.
After allowing the Yankees to tie it in the bottom of the fourth on Robinson Cano's RBI single to right, the Sox came back to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Ponson allowed a pair of singles to right to Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia. He loaded the bases with a walk to David Ortiz, then handed the Sox a 3-2 lead by walking Kevin Youkilis with the bases full.
Jason Bay lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right, scoring Pedroia to give the Sox a 4-2 lead.
Edwar Ramirez relieved Ponson and got out of the inning by inducing Jed Lowrie to ground to first.
The Yankees were unable to muster a response in the bottom of the fifth, which meant the game was official and that Yankee Stadium was one game closer to its finale.
Yankees Hall of Famer Goose Gossage did the honors by giving a pull on the lever that changed the numbers on the electronic toteboard in center field from 15 to 14, meaning there are only 14 games left in the final season in the House That Ruth Built.
