NEW YORK --- After Johnny Damon got the Yankees off to a roaring start by hitting a leadoff homer against Sox starter Tim Wakefield, marking Damon's third leadoff homer of the season and 25th of his career, the Red Sox rallied to tie it, 1-1, in the second and then erupted for two more runs in the third.

David Ortiz and Kevin Youkillis ripped back-to-back doubles off Andy Pettitte. Youk's drove in Big Papi and Jason Bay came up and drove in Youk with a run-scoring single up the middle to give the Sox a 3-2 lead.
