Sox move on

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 8, 2008 02:57 PM

CHICAGO - As much as the Red Sox would have liked depth and protection for their injured players, they are moving on at this hour after receiving a thumbs down from San Diego outfielder Brian Giles on a deal to Boston. A Padres source has confirmed that Giles, who had a no-trade clause that included Boston, will be returned to the Padres.

The Red Sox are still searching for outfield protection and may not be through scouring the waiver wire for another player who has cleared waivers who might protect them off the bench. Because Giles isn't that much of an impact player, it's doubtful the Sox feel a victory that he won't be heading to Tampa Bay. It appears Giles would have vetoed a deal there as well.

The Padres are doing all they can to dump payroll and seemed to think Boston would have no problem picking up the pro-rated $9 million contract which would also include a $2 million relocation bonus. It's all for naught now.

  1. Who needs this over-rated, over the hill bum, anyway? Where would he play? They can barely give Sean Casey playing time, and he can still hit. Giles would be a FIFTH outfielder on a team that is having trouble getting enough playing time for Crisp as it is.

Let some other team deal with his bloated salary and mediocre numbers. They Yankees are good at collecting over the hill, ex-stars...they'd be perfect!

  1. That's fine, he wasn't our guy. It would have just complicated things. We're going to need a little more magic than one of the Giles brothers could provide to get things done this year. I say keep looking, but don't do anything crazy.

  1. Good! He's a juicer anyway! Hey, Theo! Have you considered that acquiring a middle reliever would be exponentially more important to the Red Sox than acquiring a 37 year old, washed-up juicer. And, don't tell me that saviour David "Polly wants a cracker" Pauley is walking through that door to help this team. If you're going the juicer route, why not go after the biggest loser of them all: Barry "Big Head" Bonds!

  1. Something is wrong with this picture.

A 37 year-old ballplayer who has never won a world series (and is hanging onto his everyday player status by a thread) rejects a deal to a World Series contender, even though he stands to earn $2 M more if he is traded?

It reminds me of Rafael Palmeiro rejecting a deal from the lowly Rangers to the surging Cubs back in '03 - the year the Cubs almost went all the way.

It's a shame these players don't value winning the same way the fans do.

  1. This seems about right....Giles wouldn't have added much to what we already have, and he'd be gone by next season anyways...but what does stick out in my mind is that he doesn't really care about having a chance to win a World Series. Lord knows the Padres aren't doing that anytime soon. Let him waste away in the beautiful San Diego weather I say.

  1. What an idiot... nix a chance to go from a last place team to the defending world champs and contenders for the playoffs? And he would make $2 million more... Guess he REALLY wants to play everyday- even if it means losing 4 out of 5 games every week.

  1. This guy would rather play for a team 27 games under .500 and in dead last place in their division, what a joke!
