Sox moving on without Manny

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff August 1, 2008 04:53 PM

Theo Epstein and Terry Francona met with Sox players before heading upstairs for a press conference, during which Epstein described the Manny Ramirez trade as making the "best of a difficult circumstance" and putting the team in a position to move forward collectively. "We had a meeting with 25 guys who feel like a team,'' Epstein said. "We haven't felt like that for a week.''

Third baseman Mike Lowell said that the "atmosphere was weird in the last week.''

"[Ramirez] is not a press guy,'' Lowell said. "When you see his quotes every day, that's something different. I don't think it's all that surprising, but it was weird, like I said.

"If Dustin Pedroia said those same comments, we'd think he was a Martian. If Manny says it, people like it. It's front [page] news.''

Red Sox manager Terry Francona was asked if he had achieved some "mental peace" now that Ramirez had been traded.

"Mental peace?" Francona asked. "Are you quoting Manny? Look. When we win games, we feel better."

More quotes from Theo at the pregame press conference:

  • "There was an environment that was not conducive to winning surrounding this club We wanted to change that if we could. We also wanted to make a good baseball trade."
  • "There was going to be a time when we had somebody other than Manny Ramirez in left field. And realistically that probably was going to be in 2009."
  • "I don't think it's fair to look back and comment on why Manny was unhappy."
  • "I don't think we made this trade specifically because of what happened last week. It's a longer story than that."
  • "[Manny] had a remarkable run here. He’s one of the best righthanded hitters in history. His numbers speak for themselves. He was a key part of two World Series teams. No one can ever take that away from him."

  1. I think the Sox had a few more choices on the table, but I am happy to see his(Manny) antics are now a memory and the Sox can get back to playing some good hard baseball.
He just went too far. And he was causing the team problems. So, I had stated a few more choices:1. The Sox Management could have sat Manny down and told him they were not bringing him back next year, so if he wanted all this new found money, then he was going to have shut up and play for a new contract and earn it in his last few months as a Sox player. 2.They could have just sat his a_ _ on the bench and let him rot. I am tired of these athletes complaining all the time. Look at Nomar, still shooting his mouth off. How much more money does one man need to live. And you know over the last 5 years or so, the Sox have gotten rid of the stars just in time. Look at them now. Nomar, Damon, Pedro and the likes, all going downhill or doing very little. 3.Trade him, but don't pay his salary on the way out. Crazy.
I think the Sox will be better in the long run for having traded Manny. And I know the Yanks fans are excited because they don't have to see Manny kill them anymore, but if they can't get past the Angels, then they are not going to make the playoffs anyhow.

  1. He's gone! Finally! Time to move on and beat the A's

  1. I loved Manny, but it was his time to go. I also think that Terry Francona is one of the classiest coaches in baseball. I think Jason Bay will do a great job.

  1. manny was a great hitter when he wanted to but selfishly he would work when he wanted to , he was not the team and the Red Sox will in the long run be better without him and when he signs with a New York team for next year , we can only wish him well and hope he gives more effort to his new team , because at his age his days of being a super star will be coming to an end and hopefully then he will realize that he wasted years

  1. I was having a hard time rooting for Manny over the last couple of years - he would act like an ass, but was a genius with the bat. I'm sad it has to end this way, but I love Bay already from his press conference comments. I can root for this guy. GO RED SOX!

  1. Let's just look at it plainly. We got 7.5 great years out of Manny Ramirez - and how many free agent signings can you say that about. He was gone at the end of this year anyone, in which case we would have gotten 2 high draft picks. Instead, we got Jason Bay, and we lost two project players. This is a business. If we could be making these decisions we wouldn't be doing our day jobs so let's stop patting ourselves on the backs for knowing what the "right thing to do is". Would most of us have traded Nomar? Or Pedro? If you're saying 'yes' right now than most of you are lying.. Instead management walked the plank and in return we won 2 championships. This decision might now turn out as well but we're not in the clubhouse, which is where teams figure out whether they've got what it takes to go all the way. Chill out. Let him play and we'll go from here.

  1. Manny will spend the rest of the season in L.A. and then negotiate his deal with either the Yankees or the Mets for the 2009 season.

His act is better served elsewhere. Too bad, because he was truly in a hitting class by himself.

He will never get the adoration and appreciation he received from the Fenway Faithful.

Manny has never been, and will never be, a team player. It is always about MANNY !!!

  1. I don't care what anybody says. It's stupid to get rid of the MVP of the 2004 World Series. Do they really think they'll be better off without one of the best hitters in the history of the game? Gimmee a break.

The Sox sound like prima donnas, a bunch of whiny gazillionaires who can't play because they've got a weird guy on the team.

And where's Schilling? I haven't seen him all year, just heard his big mouth and the sound of the cash register ringing. All this for $100 tickets?

I think Theo Duquette's just happy he doesn't have to negotiate Manny's contract and used this as an excuse to save money. Because that's all it's always about. MONEY.

  1. Marvelous move Theo and company. Personally, I finally had it a few weeks back when he pushed the elderly Sox employee to the ground over lack of tickets. He's completely ignorant, has shown a lack of self control over his entire employ with my beloved Sox, and needs to grow up, just not here. I hope you realize that "Manny being Manny" was a joke and an affront to all intelligent Boston sports fans. Making excuses for a toddler is one thing, but for a thirty-four year old ignorant multi-millionaire? Please. Good job, fellas, you've done the right thing.
And hats off to Frank McCourt........you have no idea what you just bought.....

  1. Fair enough comments from Epstein and crew

  1. The Sox didn't trade Manny, Moss, Hansen and two future draft picks for Bay. The Sox also kept Youk, Pedroia and 22 other guys in the clubhouse. If the Sox didn't pull the trigger then it would have been the end of 2008 and that Management/Player rift that was part of the Red Sox fabric for so long would have crept back into this championship club. Theo, you got the best you could get in a tough situation.

  1. Manny, when you finally realize what you did, you will regret it. You'll never play for a better organization, or city like Boston again. Good luck in LA ... you will fit right in...

Looking forward to a breath of fresh air. Bay sounds like a professional with the right skill set and experience to exceed in Boston.

    Welcome to the Sox Bay.

  1. I look at Manny like a balloon mortgage. You got him interest free for eight years, then the balloon came due...and what was it? Craig Hansen, Brian Moss and 7 mil. If that had been the deal at the beginning of the loan, you would have done it in a heartbeat. And not only that, but the bank says for being such a good customer we're going to throw in a 12-piece China set called Jason Bay. Like they say, no crying in baseball.

  1. Reading Manny's comments from LA felt like hearing about an old ex-girlfriend. Weird.

  1. Cant wait to see Manny in pinstripes next year. Its going to be beautiful. Uncle Theo is a fool. Can't wait for Bob Lobel to say, "Why can't we get guys like that" When Manny hits one of the Monstah for a homah.

Posted by Boston Yankee Fan August 1, 08 11:13 PM
  1. The "Pinstripes" can have him, Toby. He can't fix the mess they Yanks have created all by himself. 26 and holding, my furry little friend.

  1. From a long-suffering Pirates fan...you'll like Bay. He plays hard, doesn't shoot his mouth off and is pretty darn good. I hate to see him go but glad he is with the Sox. I hope he helps beat the Yanks. Maybe we'll have a major league team in Pittsburgh some day, until then I'll keep rooting for the Sox.

  1. and how many world series do the sox win without manny?

  1. The Red Sox got suckered!!!! The whole Manny thing was a Scott Boras production and the Red Sox management fell for it. If the Sox had picked up Manny's 2009 option Boras would not have earned anything since the contract was negotiated by another agent. Same for 2010.

Now how could Boras make money off Manny? Have the Sox trade him and in trtading him release him from the 2009 and 2010 optio years of the contract. How could Boras have the Sox release Manny from the option years? By having Manny do enough things to anger Sox management to the point that they wanted him out of Boston at any cost.

What management should have done is call Manny and Boras in and tell them if Manny played out the rest of this season wsith no outbursts and no slacking off they would not pick up the option years. But if he continued to act up they would pick up the 2009 option year and he would be stuck in Boston.

What would Manny have done? What he always does, go out and hit 300, 35 homers and knock in 100 plus runs. Manny lives for two things money and hitting. The Sox had nim both ways but let egos get in the way of good management.

Mow they are paying the rest of Manny's salary this year, the rest of Jason Bay's salary this year and have let Scott Boras sucker them. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!!

  1. Look, Manny was a great hitter, nobody can take that away from him. Also he was a decent fielder at fenway, but average at best on the road.. He also QUIT on his manager, who covered his a** many times, his teamates, and us Red Sox fans!!!!!! I'll take players like Pedroia, Youkillis, Varitek and Lowell who respect the game and give 110% all the time. Jason Bay is a better overall ball player. Also it's funny to hear comments from nomar, who was offered a big contract. Management was smart to unload him. He's done NOTHING since!!!!Bet your a** he wishes he was back in beantown....

  1. I gladly overlooked many of Manny's eccentricities and even his occasional dogging it. I always figured that if you snapped Manny's leash, you'd get less out of him, not more. That loose discipline provided the zone where his joyful, freaky free spirit could hit 40 HR's and 120 RBI's. But he went too far.

Saying "The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me" meant he HAD to be traded. Physical altercations with teammates and staff, and insults to the owner were just the backdrop. Dogging it became more than occasional, (the Yankees series was too important to have him sit), and ultimately, he was dogging it to the point where he was no longer a true teammate. I lost a lot of respect for him in recent months. The joy was gone.

Boston would have made the post-season easily with a motivated, productive Manny Ramirez. Unfortunately, there was no longer one of those available.

  1. I'm so glad he is gone. He was nothing but a big distraction. It's all about Manny. He's not a team player and he has proven that many times. He got paid well for what he did here. He did not appreciate what he had. Most MLB ball players would be ecstatic to play left field for the Red Sox where Ted Williams, Carl Yastremyzki, and Jim Rice played. Not to mention he is getting paid $20 million per year. That's about $125K per game.! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. He's a baby. I can't play because my knee hurts....after he had two MRIs that showed nothing wrong! I say 'Good riddings' and don't let the door hit you in the maximus glutimus on the way out. I'm sure the management and team is relieved. As far as I'm concerned, he can take his dreadlocks and baggypants act to LA and see how they like it. I'm excited about the new kid Jason Bay. He looks and sounds like a solid ball player and I hope he flourishes for he rest of the year. I commend the Red Sox management for putting together a good trade that was executed in a very professional manner under the circumstances.

  1. I hope the Yankees do sign him next year! There can only be one prima donna on a team. Who will be the alpha prima donna on the Yankees, A-Rod or Manny? Could be an interesting battle.

Oh, and Yankee fans don't appreciate lack of hustle, either.
