Sox sweep, 5-2

Posted by Michael Vega, Globe Staff August 3, 2008 05:13 PM

The Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland A's with a 5-2 victory before a Fenway Park crowd of 37, 317.

Jonathan Papelbon came into the game in the ninth inning to record his team-leading 31st save of the season, striking out Daric Barton to end the game. It made a winner of starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who improved his record to 12-2 on the season.

The Red Sox will head to Kansas City where they will open a three-game set against the Royals Monday night.

  1. Good start for Jason Bay. As a long-time Pirate fan I promise you are going to love this guy. He is a quiet leader in the clubhouse. He plays much better defense than the guy who got traded. And despite looking like Opie Taylor he has surprising power -- strength might be a better word. There will not be many line drive home runs but lots of towering fly balls that just keep carrying. It is great to see him get a chance to win.

  1. For the vast majority of each season, doesn't it go without saying that a team's closer will be the team-leader in saves?

  1. Who is this Michael Vega?
He can't add 3 and 1 (he gets 3 as a result), he can't count outs, now he is telling us that the team closer is a team saves leader - in the end of the season...
    Is everybody else on vacation?
