Yaz still recovering

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 23, 2008 03:56 PM

TORONTO - Just got off the phone with Carl Yastrzemski's agent, Dick Gordon, who indicated there's no news on Yaz, other than he's still recovering at Mass General Hospital.

"We haven't heard about a day for his release, but we're looking forward to it," Gordon said.

Gordon said Yaz seemed to be in good spirits and recovering from a triple bypass last Tuesday. Yaz turned 69 years old on Friday, but Gordon said there are plans for a birthday party for Yaz once he leaves the hospital.

  1. Best wishes to Yaz and thanks for many great memories. I followed your entire career and still as of today, nobody ever played LF better than you.

  1. Yaz is man of conviction, and a team player. He played for the Red Sox, and never sold out... like some past players. I will pray for his well being, and hope he fully recuperates!

  1. He was a hero to a whole generation. Who can't forget how all New England rallied around the Sox in `67', with Yaz, Rico, Reggie Smith and Lonborg as the stars. Yaz was old school, and nobody played left field like he did. Although his stats suggest otherwise, he was an all-star and in the late 60's was regularly near the top of the batting averages, winning the triple crown in 1967 and a batting title in 1968, and then missing by hundreths of percentage points, another batting title in 1970. When later he transitioned to First base, he made it look easy. I hope he makes a full and complete recovery.

  1. Aside from perhaps Larry Bird, Yaz remains the best example of what a man can become if he really applies himself. Fewer athletes have ever gotten more out of themselves than these two Boston sports icons, and nobody ever played that wall, or hit in the clutch, better than Carl Michael Yastrzemski.

Here's to a super speedy recovery, Yaz. Hope to see you out at the ballpark, real soon.
