Zink will start Tuesday
We've just been informed that knuckleballer Charlie Zink will start tomorrow night against the Rangers in place of the injured Tim Wakefield. The 28-year-old Zink is 13-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 25 games with Pawtucket this season.
I wrote about Zink about a week and a half ago for the Globe's minor league notebook.

Much as I love Wake, glad to see Zink get a chance with his knuckler. It's great having a slow pitch guy in the rotation to mess with other teams' hitters psyches. And am happy to try out some of the other youngsters after Bucholz/Masterston/Colon has not proven a viable solution at the #5 spot.
Time for this guy to get is chance against hard swingers. Good chance that he'll do reasonably well.
Just what we need another knuckleballer
It's about time they gave Charlie Zink a chance. Now when do they send Bucholtz back down.
good for you charlie, have fun and pitch well!!!!!
Who?
I Zink I saw a knuckleball. I did I did see a knuckleball
Witnessed Zink several times at PawSox. He looked very good last Friday ... could be a good fit!
Toldja. Think Zink!
Zink is one of, if not THE best pitchers in the International League. For those of you who don't know him, it isn't HIS fault you don't pay attention to AAA ball.
From what I've heard about Charlie Zink, he is a talented, young knuckleballer. I saw him play in Pawtucket and he looks quite confident on the hill. So, I hope he'll impress Boston.
Welcome Charlie. I'm looking forward to seeing you pitch. Agree with Time, when is Clay being sent down?
Or is it really "done?"
Zink is an excellent prospect and an excellent idea for call up, but with one major problem.
How many rookies start their first major league start on three days rest?
Is he a relative of the kitchen Zink? Seriously, folks,
I hear good things about him and I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch. I agree with Tim who wonders when Clay Bucholz is being sent down. Looks to me as if he is already "down" or is it "done?"
well deserved chance for this kid who has done his time in our system. good luck kid - i'm pulling for you.
It's Zink-or-swim time.
This Sox ship will not zink.
Zink the Yanks!
In the linked story, Zink seemed to think that there can only be one knuckleballer on a team at the same time, I guess he was right.
Bucholz is clearly lost at this time, I think he could use some more time in the minors to find his stuff. I'd like to see an open audition for the role of 5th starter.
That's what I call a smart move...Tim Wakefield was always pitching good basebal games but no hitting behind his master piesces, now we come up with another Knucleballer ..could you imagine both of them one after the other on pitching the way it should be...

Hey Ben, Masterston was working out as a starter! I don't know why they switched him to reliever. Colon did his job the first 4 games. Bucholz ? I guess you can't give up on a guy with a no-hitter just yet.
Ben, what are you talking about? First, it's "Masterson." Second, Masterson was 4-3 with a 3.67 era as the 5th starter. That's pretty good. They moved him to help the bullpen and because they had other, less flexible, pitchers to start. Colon got injured swinging a bat, but was 4-2 with a 4.09 era. That's also pretty good. Only Buchholz has dissapointed. But this isn't a 5th starter situation - it's subbing for Wake while he's injured - although it could change to that... Although I sound like a "homer" it's just the numbers. Buchholz is the only starter who has filled the 5th for more than one start and strugged this year.
There once was a pitcher named Zink
Who made Triple-A hitters think
"Oh man, what was that?"
"I just dropped my bat!""
"Next time I'll just try not to blink."
Best of luck Charlie!
Bucholz needs at least another half of a year in the minors...He has good stuff, but his location is terrible...The fast ball is still the best pitch in baseball and he has to throw it more, but to the right place. The Rangers are a free swinging team and Zink should do OK...Masterson looks great in relief...leave him there.
good luck we're behind ya.......zink or swim
Love it!
Pitching on 3 days rest with adrenalin flowing on a first time triy at the bigs is not likely to succeed. Can't afford an experiment at this stage- Hansack or Bowden a better shot.
I believe that we are all over looking one very KEY element. I is high time that Boston place either Zink or Wakefield in the bullpen, as the yankees did with the Nikro brothers.
i believe that if we bring out a knuckleballer as setup after lets say Becket,Lester etc having thrown in the 80-90's and the have our knuckleballer in low sixties we would win many more games

"How many rookies start their first major league start on three days rest?"
Never mind THAT. The real question is: How many times in major league history has an injured knuckleballer been replaced in the rotation by... another knuckleballer?
Zero?
