Throwing a couple of notable afternoon links your way . . .

Sports Illustrated.com's Jon Heyman has a look at Sunday night's farewell to Yankee Stadium -- who knew Bernie Williams was adored that much? -- while also speculating on possible changes to New York's roster next season (he floats the idea of a Robinson Cano-for-Matt Kemp swap with the Dodgers). But Heyman's best anecdote comes at the end of the column, when he notes that Yankees players were signing memorabilia for each other after the festivities.

Scenes from a Stadium closing [included] players autographing for other players, and Mussina telling A-Rod to note his "almost 20 wins in 1997,'' his "almost no-hitter in 1999,'' and his "almost world championship in 2001.''

Raise your hand if you knew Mussina has a sense of humor.

ESPN.com's Wright Thompson offers an elegant tribute to the Stadium. His segment about the room that once stood as a dying Lou Gehrig's sanctuary is almost enough to make a Sox fan sentimental for the old place.

Finally, catching up with a pair of old friends: A frustrated Pedro Martinez, he of the 5.50 ERA this season, says he's willing to pitch out of the bullpen in the postseason -- presuming, of course, that the gasping Mets make it that far.

Meanwhile, Derek Lowe is quietly contributing almost as much as Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers' postseason push. According to MLB.com, after pitching seven scoreless innings against the Giants Sunday, Lowe is now 6-1 with a 1.33 ERA in his last nine starts, and he has a 0.66 ERA in September. He has been known to have his moments this time of year.
