With space on their expanded roster and a potential need for an arm in their bullpen, the Red Sox added reliever Devern Hansack this morning from Pawtucket. Hansack had cups of coffee with the Sox in 2006 and 2007 but has not been with the big club this season.

"Just to give our bullpen some depth if something happened," Francona said. "If somebody gets a ball in the shin, it doesn't get our bullpen out of whack."

The Sox, who now have 29 players available, also made another minor move, officially removing Bartolo Colon from the 60-day disabled list so he can make his rehab start today in Pawtucket's playoff game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The victim of that move is Marcus McBeth, a right-handed reliever.
