Henry: Epstein has new deal

Posted by Dan Shaughnessy, Globe Staff September 16, 2008 03:12 PM

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has agreed to a contract extending beyond this season, but the deal has not yet been formalized or signed, according to owner John Henry.

‘‘We are all on the same page with regard to our vision for the organization," Henry wrote in an e-mail this afternoon. "The negotiations were pleasant and were all about rewarding Theo for the great, great job he has done in bringing two world championships to the Red Sox. We look forward to the difficult task of trying to win a third."

Henry clarified in a later e-mail that while the main negotiations were complete and "lawyers are handling the details," the sides haven't settled all matters.

Terms for his new deal are unknown.

Epstein, who was raised in Brookline, was named the Red Sox general manager on Nov. 25, 2002. Then 28, he was the youngest GM in baseball history at the time.

In his first season, the franchise fell one victory shy of a World Series berth. The next year, the Red Sox won it all for the first time since 1918, and made the postseason for the third straight year in 2005.

But shortly after the '05 season ended, Epstein resigned from the Red Sox due to philosophical differences with president/chief executive officer Larry Lucchino. He returned to the team a few months later, signing a three-year deal which was to expire at the end of this season.

  1. What deals has he done again??

    Trade Manny
    Sign Lugo
Sign Drew for way to much
Traded our best catching prospect for Coco Crisp
fail to sign Mirabelli and then trade for him... smart
    signed Renteria
Lucked out with Mike Lowell in his only good deal for Beckett (which he gave up the rookie of the year and possible MVP)
    Traded Bronson Arroya for Pena

Sounds like a winner to me. The teams have won the world series, not because of this guy.

  1. This is good news. Stability in the organization is a good thing...especially an organization that's been as top notch as this one.

After suffering for too many years under less-than-ideal ownership and inept GM-ing and scouting, it's nice to know the Red Sox are in such good, competent hands, and will stay that way for the foreseeable future.

  1. I gotta agree with the first comment in terms of rebuilding from within. As far as the fourth comment, knowing Theo, he's probably going to look over the contract and ask what affect will this have on how much the rest of the front office staff is going to have to get paid before he signs it.

  1. Theo is arguably the best GM in the history of the franchise. 2 World Championships, a revamped farm system in his short tenure that
is cranking out excellent players, one after the other. ( Pedroia, Lester, Papelbon, to name a few.) Theo deserves his contract and I'm very happy for him.

Posted by Wanda September 16, 08 04:22 PM
  1. One of the most overrated GMs in baseball. Most of his success has come from the player development side, for which there are others providing the meaningful identification of talent, rather than just his genius. His trades for the most part have been bad and his free agent signings have been mostly wasted $. His smarmy attitude is wearing thin too. With that as a backdrop, and a huge payroll as a safety net (how many GMs get mulligans like Renteria, Lugo, Drew?) I can't say I commend this move.

Posted by dsg September 16, 08 04:41 PM
  1. This probably is overstating his value, but Theo is God. End of story--we wouldn't have the team/organization/development success if it weren't for his leadership. Now as long as Luchino and he can get along, sox fans could be seeing unprecedented long term success that generations of fans have dreamed about.

  1. I must admit I thought Epstein acted like a spolied brat after the '05 season. If it weren't for Larry Lucchino he never would have been hired as the youngest GM ever. He seemed ungrateful at the time. Larry brought Epstein from San Diego to Boston. I don't know what his differences with Larry were but Theo said he had lost his passion for baseball. He seemed to get it back in a hurry. He tried to find another job but wasn't able. He's so lucky to be the GM of the Sox. He's done a good job since that incident but I still get the impression he's not as appreciative to Larry as he should be. Epstein seemed to be holding the Sox hostage after they won the Series in '04!

  1. He is the most overrated GM in the game. He makes poor trades and horrible signings. The reason the Sox are so good is because they have drafted well, and that has nothing to do with Epstein, it is all due to the scouting department. If you put Theo on a small market team where he couldn't afford to make mistakes like Lugo, everyone would see he is just the product of having a DEEP pocket book and good scouts.

  1. Grade B-?? After winning two world series? How soon some of you fans forget how incredibly INEPT this franchise's front office was, from Cronin's favoritism for his drinking buddies, to racial blackballing, to the 1970s meltdowns, to the 90s scitzophernia to 2001 and 2002, when teams that really had a chance just imploded.
The Sox brain trust is the best in the business. No signing always works out. How was Theo to know Gagne jumped off the juice?! LOL. Lugo's signing sucked. But Drew at least proved huge in Sept. Oct. last year and June this year. Not worth $14 million, but probably better than the $12 million they didn't give Johnny Damon (God love him, he can't throw or run anymore!) How about shrewd moves of not overpaying Pedro, trading Nomar, not overpaying Lowe, even letting Cabrera go, which helped build that incredible draft of '05. Hell the '05 draft alone makes Theo one of the best in the biz.
B Minus! You are spoiled man. Very spoiled. You should come watch a Giants game with me earlier this year. I'll show you what a B Minus looks like.
