Henry: Epstein has new deal
Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has agreed to a contract extending beyond this season, but the deal has not yet been formalized or signed, according to owner John Henry.
‘‘We are all on the same page with regard to our vision for the organization," Henry wrote in an e-mail this afternoon. "The negotiations were pleasant and were all about rewarding Theo for the great, great job he has done in bringing two world championships to the Red Sox. We look forward to the difficult task of trying to win a third."
Henry clarified in a later e-mail that while the main negotiations were complete and "lawyers are handling the details," the sides haven't settled all matters.
Terms for his new deal are unknown.
Epstein, who was raised in Brookline, was named the Red Sox general manager on Nov. 25, 2002. Then 28, he was the youngest GM in baseball history at the time.
In his first season, the franchise fell one victory shy of a World Series berth. The next year, the Red Sox won it all for the first time since 1918, and made the postseason for the third straight year in 2005.
But shortly after the '05 season ended, Epstein resigned from the Red Sox due to philosophical differences with president/chief executive officer Larry Lucchino. He returned to the team a few months later, signing a three-year deal which was to expire at the end of this season.

Thank GOD!!! He's assembled a great group of rising stars. I can't wait to see what Bowden, Bard, Anderson, et al. Can do in the future.
Theo rocks. Plain and simple.
Welcome back, Theo. Good job, so far. :-)

Congratulations to Theo. The Red Sox can't pay him enough.
Thank God. It is nice to keep the best general manager in all of sports!!!
Well done! And, smart to lock him up before Hank offered him, oh, say, $25 million to replace Cashman!
This genuinely makes me happy to see that everything is going amicably in that front office of ours.
The GM who does nothing. Larry Lucchino runs the team. Theo is a figurehead.
Theo,
Great news to have you staying on board to direct our lovable Red Sox francise.
Best wishes for continued success.

Any chance Theo likes hockey? There's a local team that could us some direction that isn't related to H.S.

Theo = Team Nuf said!
Lock him up for the next 30 years. This guy knows talent when he sees it.
Interesting...wonder what this means for Lucchino. it might be the end of the road for him. CHB has made it sound like its one or the other in past articles...
Where is Lucchino now? You never see or hear a peep from him at all... Is he on his way out? What's the deal?
Theo, your first move under this new contract... Dump Lugo and promote Lowery as the starter. This way, you will no longer be criticized for your questionable SS signings over the years.
Theo is not only hott, he's freakin' awesome! I agree, he's got a great group of athletes! :o) Got kudos from over here!!!

Theo the rock the REDSOX lean on
Way to go Henry and Co.!! could not take more "gorilla suit" madness this off season...Theo is THE MAN
Theo is da man!
You people are as as blind as bats and dumb as sheep.
The is guy the luckiest gm in baseball. Still a majority of the best player were spawned by the Duke Era. Youk-Lester-Becket-Delcarmen-Wake.
In Theo we trust!!!!!!
This is great !!!! From a long time Red Sox fan in Claremont N.H.
Thanks Theo

Theo is the second most interesting/key figure in Boston sports behind the grand wizard of the grey hoodie. Long live the gorilla.
This is great news! Theo is the BEST! Keep up the wonderful work of bringing us more world championships!
Great news! Welcome back Theo!
PS. If you read this, please RESIGN Varitek! Please.
I guess this means he won't be wearing the gorilla costume again any time soon!
good deal, theo epstein has earned this extension, not only with building the 2007 champion team, but by making the needed moves to keep the 2008 team in contention for this years division.
Though this offseason the sox are going to lose a couple of theos minions I think the sox should pursue Brian Cashman to be assistant gm
What deals has he done again??
Trade Manny
Sign Lugo
Sign Drew for way to much
Traded our best catching prospect for Coco Crisp
fail to sign Mirabelli and then trade for him... smart
signed Renteria
Lucked out with Mike Lowell in his only good deal for Beckett (which he gave up the rookie of the year and possible MVP)
Traded Bronson Arroya for Pena
Sounds like a winner to me. The teams have won the world series, not because of this guy.
Good job JH on retaining Theo the Great. Cheers from INDIA!
Theo is a god! I have questioned many of his moves but he is always right. Trading Nomar won us our first World Series and trading Manny will win us our third. He should be the highest paid GM in Baseball. Congrats Theo you deserve it.
Yes this is a relationship that should never break up
Theo, would you be interested in selling your gorilla suit, or are you going to give it to RemDawg so he can make a fast buck on it?
This is good news. Stability in the organization is a good thing...especially an organization that's been as top notch as this one.
After suffering for too many years under less-than-ideal ownership and inept GM-ing and scouting, it's nice to know the Red Sox are in such good, competent hands, and will stay that way for the foreseeable future.
Congrats Theo on the contract . You have more than earned your money.
Congrats Theo on the contract . You have more than earned your money.
I hope it's for at Least 3-4 or even 5 years.
IN THEO WE TRUST -
Signed, Red Sox Nation !!
this is great news, but I can't help feeling a bit queasy considering how things went back in '05 with DShaughnessy reporting a deal was struck, but not signed.
I gotta agree with the first comment in terms of rebuilding from within. As far as the fourth comment, knowing Theo, he's probably going to look over the contract and ask what affect will this have on how much the rest of the front office staff is going to have to get paid before he signs it.
there's only one member of the Red Sox we absolutely cannot allow the Yankees to get. And its Theo.
Slow down Theo groupies. Let's not forget the Sox
have one of the highest payrolls. Sir Theo has
had as many hits as misses. But I am
as jealous as the rest of you. No gorilla
suit this time? Too bad.
Theo is arguably the best GM in the history of the franchise. 2 World Championships, a revamped farm system in his short tenure that
is cranking out excellent players, one after the other. ( Pedroia, Lester, Papelbon, to name a few.) Theo deserves his contract and I'm very happy for him.
I can't believe how happy I am. Stay grounded Theo (Please).
Greetings from Orlando. Way to go!! Theo has done such a fantastic job. Go Sox!!!!!
One of the most overrated GMs in baseball. Most of his success has come from the player development side, for which there are others providing the meaningful identification of talent, rather than just his genius. His trades for the most part have been bad and his free agent signings have been mostly wasted $. His smarmy attitude is wearing thin too. With that as a backdrop, and a huge payroll as a safety net (how many GMs get mulligans like Renteria, Lugo, Drew?) I can't say I commend this move.
One less resume for Cashman to print out.
Jacoby, Dustin, Masterson, Lowrie..NEED WE SAY MORE. Great move!
Yay -- no Gorrilla Suit II.
Great news!! He and Terry Francona are a great team.
And to think, Shaughnessy nearly drove him away with the column ghost-written by Lucchino back in the gorilla suit days.
This probably is overstating his value, but Theo is God. End of story--we wouldn't have the team/organization/development success if it weren't for his leadership. Now as long as Luchino and he can get along, sox fans could be seeing unprecedented long term success that generations of fans have dreamed about.
Theo it's nice to keep you in the fold. If you need anymore advice on trades and signings don't hesitate to call.
Anyone know how a 28 yr. old got a GM job with the best franchise in sports history?
Congrats to Theo !!! What a Great News ~!
Thanks henry.
PS) Don't trade Top prospect for salty ...
that smiley face is kind of creepy
Theo is the reason we're takin over baseball! There's no better way to put it. We have a dynasty built on mostly farm system talent, and for the looks of it there's plenty of more Rollin Rallies to come!!! It's the take over, the RED SOX NATION take over!!!
All I can say is..... Our Future is BRIGHT!!
what a great news ~~!!
In Theo We Trust!
Whatever they are paying him it is not enough. Thanks Theo!
While everybody is happy for Theo, don't forget those who have suffered today. Namely one, Dan "Shank" Shaughnessy. Theo will continue to rub his success in CHB's face while he can only impotently rage from the pages of the Globe. Sorry, Dan.
Terrific news. Something would be irretrievably lost without Theo on this team.
I LIKE PEACHES
Theo, I'm glad that the Boston Red Sox know how to value your talent.
Thank God for John Henry & Co. for taking over this franchise. He's not only a genius, generous too! Good luck to all!!
oh great, he didn't sign the contract again. I look forward to seeing him leave in a KPAX costume come Halloween night (your produce was worth the trip alone)
Seriously, build the guy a statue out there across from Cask and Flaggin. No matter what the haters say, he did what nobody could do. And he did it twice. With this contract, a third time seems pretty likely.
Congrats Theo.
great news.
Theo, you're the best.
Signed:
Julio, Eric, Edgar, J.D.
(JUST KIDDING--ALL CHILL)
Seriously, Theo has done a truly remarkable job. All the best in years to come.
I heart Theo.
ok...now...we havent heard about Lucchino, there was some talk he would be headed out to LA?
I like cookies
Theo is the best in the biz! He's rebuilt the farm system WHILE winning 2 titles. We are fortunate to have him in charge!!
I must admit I thought Epstein acted like a spolied brat after the '05 season. If it weren't for Larry Lucchino he never would have been hired as the youngest GM ever. He seemed ungrateful at the time. Larry brought Epstein from San Diego to Boston. I don't know what his differences with Larry were but Theo said he had lost his passion for baseball. He seemed to get it back in a hurry. He tried to find another job but wasn't able. He's so lucky to be the GM of the Sox. He's done a good job since that incident but I still get the impression he's not as appreciative to Larry as he should be. Epstein seemed to be holding the Sox hostage after they won the Series in '04!
Good Job Dan and the Globe. . . you've scooped every one by a couple of hours.
I don't know where we'd be with you THEO!
Keep up the good work because I love champions
While Theo deserves due credit for his excellent signings waiver signings this season, let's not forget that this is the same GM who gave up vg talent for a month or so of Gagne, and who has inked Lugo, Drew and Renteria to long-term contracts. Overall grade: B- .
In Theo We Trust +1
Prediction Time: Theo takes over for Lucchino as President and hires Cashman, whos contract is up as G.M. with the Yankees. You heard it here first.
From a die hard SOX fan living in central NY, Theo has done what nobody else has done and deserves the best !!!
YAY I LOVE THEO GOOD JOB EP
We owe everything to Theo. I have been a fan for 50 years and never thought we would win it all. The team is built for the future and we will win another one soon. If you're reading this Theo, please leave Lugo in an airport somewhere.
Theo Rocks.
www.soxology.com has cool shirts to show your love!
He is the most overrated GM in the game. He makes poor trades and horrible signings. The reason the Sox are so good is because they have drafted well, and that has nothing to do with Epstein, it is all due to the scouting department. If you put Theo on a small market team where he couldn't afford to make mistakes like Lugo, everyone would see he is just the product of having a DEEP pocket book and good scouts.
Who cares? Champions? You won 2 titles in the last million years. Champions? LOL
The is the best. He gave us $100+ mill and we suck.
Sincerely,
JD Drew and Matt Clement
Grade B-?? After winning two world series? How soon some of you fans forget how incredibly INEPT this franchise's front office was, from Cronin's favoritism for his drinking buddies, to racial blackballing, to the 1970s meltdowns, to the 90s scitzophernia to 2001 and 2002, when teams that really had a chance just imploded.
The Sox brain trust is the best in the business. No signing always works out. How was Theo to know Gagne jumped off the juice?! LOL. Lugo's signing sucked. But Drew at least proved huge in Sept. Oct. last year and June this year. Not worth $14 million, but probably better than the $12 million they didn't give Johnny Damon (God love him, he can't throw or run anymore!) How about shrewd moves of not overpaying Pedro, trading Nomar, not overpaying Lowe, even letting Cabrera go, which helped build that incredible draft of '05. Hell the '05 draft alone makes Theo one of the best in the biz.
B Minus! You are spoiled man. Very spoiled. You should come watch a Giants game with me earlier this year. I'll show you what a B Minus looks like.
millions of peaches peaches for me millions of peaches peaches for free
It was no secret how valuable he was when they hired him in the first place. I named my german shepherd Theo 3 years ago. This is a no brainer! Best in the business, plain and simple.
.....Steve September 16, 08 05:38 PM...."YOUR AN IDIOT, B-, you're an F"
Thanks Theo for the rings and for changing the hearts of Redsox Nation from bitter to Proud (well most of us anyway!) 2 WS in 4 years...Overall Grade...A.
Keep it going!!!
Graham, you took the words right out of my mouth. You and I are the only people who can see this. Other GM's, besides Cashman in NY, cannotsign all these bad free agents and then trade them, while eating half their contracts and still keep their jobs.
I named my dog after him!
Ugh, how many will drink the cool aid without actually looking at the facts. B- is generous in my opinion. An even C, people let the WS cloud their judgement and give him far too much credit for them as it is.
He won the world series with Lucchino and Duquette's players
There are two people who are not happy about this news: Larry Lucchino and Dan Shaughnessy.
