Lowell, etc.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- How does the reigning World Series MVP go about trying to brush aside the hip injury threatening to block him from the ALDS?

“I think,” Mike Lowell said, “you try to just [step] up and go.”

Lowell is doing that at this instant, getting in the final workout that, he said, will determine whether he plays in Game 1 tomorrow night. A scenario in which Lowell starts at designated hitter and David Ortiz plays first base is also in play.

The notion of sitting out tomorrow in order to guarantee health for the remainder of the series never entered his mind. “This is the biggest stage,” Lowell said.

Still, he doesn’t know quite yet if he’ll play at all. The workout will let him know.

“I think I’ll know pretty quick defensively,” Lowell said. “Moving left and right was what bothered me before, and then I purposefully haven’t made those movements. I think where we were in the season, we could take things slow, so we did it that way. I don’t know – maybe if I had to play four days ago, I would have been able to get right back on the field.”

  • J.D. Drew walked around the clubhouse wearing a wrap around his back, which has been omnipresent for quite some time. Drew feels good about his chances to play tomorrow. “Pretty confident,” Drew said. “I feel decent after the flight.”

Drew took batting practice yesterday. “That’s the tough thing is timing, and baseball activity, as far as that goes,” Drew said. “You just try to get in there and grind out at-bats. You can’t predict anything.”

Drew played seven innings Sunday after playing three Friday, his only action since Aug. 17. “I don’t know if it was enough,” he said. “But I felt good, felt comfortable. I could get up the next day, and it responded the next day.”

  • .Josh Beckett walked through the clubhouse and brushed aside several interview requests. He did say his right oblique is “getting better” and he will “throw a little bit” today during the workout.

We’ll have more from Terry Francona later, hopefully including a more definitive update on Lowell’s status.

    1. Did Lowell maybe say "buck up and go"? I don't recall Lowell cussing in front of reporters in the past. Josh Beckett on the other hand......... :-)

    1. The content encoding on this post is fubar. Try turning off smart quotes, or better yet, ditch Windows.

    1. why didn't the Twins win the Central based on season record with Chisox?

    1. I think Lowell really said "nut up and go". That sounds like him, but wouldn't be deemed as child friendly by the Globe.

      FROM ADAM: Very close.

    1. I don't think Lowell would say "nut up" considering his past history with testicular cancer!

    1. "why didn't the Twins win the Central based on season record with Chisox?"

They only award a division championship based on head to head record when the team on the losing end is the Wild Card winner. Such was the case in the 2005 AL East race when the yankees won the division on head-to-head record and the Red Sox were the Wild Card

    1. I think it was duck it up, with an s.

Twins didn't win it based on season head to head record because only one of them can go to playoffs. They only use that when both teams qualify for playoffs.

    1. Nope, probably sack (as in sacks of miniburgers) up and go. Playoff-caliber athletes need their calories.

    1. Wasn't J.D. supposed to be LESS injury prone than good ol' Christopher Nixon? At least Trot got injured running into walls and such. This guy could be great if he wasn't such a poos. Then again, he did turn it on in the playoffs last year. here's hoping he was just resting up for October.
