Mazz: Starters key to success
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Globe's Tony Massarotti says that, while it might sound elementary, the key to Red Sox' success in the ALDS is getting innings from the team's starting pitchers. Seven innings! For all the starters?? Look, Beckett, in top form last year, went one complete game and two seven inning games. Lester, if in top form, could easily go seven or eight, but I can't believe we *need* seven from Dice-K or a less-than-perfect Beckett. Masterson can take one or two innings in a tight game. Okie and Delcarmen ought to be effective, especially if they come into situations where the winning/tying run is not on base. Lopez has been effective and Paps can take four or five outs once in the series. But, if we get four innings out of Dice-K and little or no Beckett, then we are going to lose. Plain and simple.
