A new lineup of Sox songs

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff September 16, 2008 01:17 PM

Local songwriter Desmond Reed wrote 10 pretty catchy songs about the 2008 Red Sox. Each song is about a different player and the order of the songs corresponds (roughly) with the order of the 2008 Sox lineup.

Have a listen by clicking on the name of each player in the lineup after the jump:

  1. I am as big a RedSox supporter as there is....but this is not worthy of being on boston.com

I would rather take my life than listen to that garbage for one more second.

  1. This is great! Love the lyrics and the tune. What about making another one with all the other players including the pitchers? Thanks, Desmond Reed.

  1. I hope that those songs are born and die right here on this blog. If I ever am watching a game and NESN plays anyone of those songs I am going to punch the nearest person right in the throat.

  1. What about Coco.... Who needs a song about Lugo???

    Posted by #1redsoxfan September 16, 08 03:26 PM
  1. These are catchy, fun little songs by a obviously a big fan. Good job! I think it's hilarious that some people are taking them so seriously...!!

    Posted by JR1975 September 16, 08 03:27 PM
  1. C'mon people, stop hating. Yeah, it's a little...ummm, goofy...to say the least. And, yes, Coco ABSOLUTELY deserves a song over Lugo. But seriously, what's wrong with a little fun, it put a smile on my face...and let's see some Yankee renditions...

    He cheats on his wife
    He has no outside life
    What's not to hate about...A-ROD!

He chokes when it really matters
White gloves weren't meant for batters
    What's not to hate about...A-ROD!

  1. -Most of these songs are all horrible except for one - which happens to be pretty damn good (the Jason Bay song).
-Cheap song writing trick to sing every word of a song monotone on Ellsbury song.
    -Dustin's song is fair.
-Papi's song is painful! More monotone verses ... how about a melody???
-Youk's song is really bad ... might be improved with a shortened chorus (2 "Yoooookilis' versus 4)
    -Lowell's song is boring.
-Drew's song is another painful one.
    - Lowrie's song is embarrassing ... how long did it take to write - 3 minutes?
Listened to them all a second time and Dustin's is the only one that got an upgrade ... and Bay's song, the second time....was too short!!!

Wait, I think my groundhog sings better.

Posted by smitth September 17, 08 02:40 PM
  1. Embarrasing. I almost long for the days before the world series in 2004 when we weren't subject to all this nonsense, RSN membership cards, pink hats, stupid songs, CDs by japanese pitchers, dating games at Fenway etc....oh and affordable ticket prices. I guess this is the price for success now :(

Posted by ziggy September 17, 08 02:42 PM
  1. This sounds like Barney and the Monkeys got into a car crash. Absolutely Awful.

And why is there a song about JD Drew? I haven't seen that guy in 4 weeks......Did he get traded....Oh wait, he's just sore from getting his flu shot, I forgot. Got our money's worth there.

Posted by Spike Owen September 17, 08 03:15 PM
  1. The basement tape recordings of these tunes are going to be worth a fortune.

Posted by Hornpoppa September 17, 08 03:33 PM
  1. oh my god these are horrible. this would be disgracing the red sox organization and red sox nation if any of these songs are ever played within 100 miles of any massachusetts state border.

Posted by Josh September 17, 08 03:48 PM
  1. The "look at him go" lyrics for the Jacoby Ellsbury song actually provided a perfect soundtrack as I ran towards the window which the song initially made me want to jump through. This made me stop. So that song nearly took my life and then saved it in just a matter of moments. It's powerful stuff. Kudos to Desmond Reed.

Posted by Hornpoppa September 17, 08 04:00 PM
  1. Wow, this is the lamest thing possible. This dude must be hurting for money or something to create something so awful.

See, here in St. Pete, we don't need a song for each of our guys' egos; we let our bats and our defense do the singing, if you will. Just ask Navi about both last night and last week, when, in the 14th inning, he brought home the game-winning run (in case your selective memories forgot that like the 86 years you were w/out a ring...the RSN "members" here tend to forget that and get upset when reminded, though I'm sure it's better in Boston...hopefully). No, not a bandwaggoner (fan for a few years), so none of that talk. Just sayin'...

Posted by Jimbo September 17, 08 04:28 PM
  1. the Lugo song is depressing.........which is perfect for his career with the red sox.

  1. I think I'm going to be sick

Posted by Lynn September 17, 08 05:17 PM
  1. Ok these are horrible! If I could pull out my ears at this moment I would. If these songs were played during the game, no one would go. Maybe it's a secret ploy to empty Fenway park hmm...

Seriously though, sounds like a mix between the Dunkin Donuts commercial and the Freecreditreport.com commmercial. Both of which I hate and would love to punch the person that made them. NEVER should they've been released to the public

Posted by Motang September 17, 08 07:13 PM

  1. For cryin' out loud. Lighten up, guys. He's not gunning for a grammy here. It's good fun, and I enjoyed the whole lineup thoroughly. Great work, Desmond! The Lowell, Bay, and Varitek songs especially made me smile (and after tonight's game, I needed that)!

Perfect songs for kids to sing...

Posted by Sheila September 18, 08 07:45 PM
  1. To the person saying that they wouldn't want to hear these songs play at Fenway Park. I just wanted to say do you go to the ballpark just to hear the particular crap they already have playing at these games? Who the heck decides which music to play at these stadiums. A lot of the crap there is certainly ridiculous. And to hear that you tolerate the crap that is already being played there at the stadium but you wouldn't tolerate these particular songs it just sounds ridiculous.

Posted by John Valentin September 19, 08 09:11 AM
  1. most of them are good. ortiz's is horrible. lowell's is the best

Posted by Ryan September 21, 08 05:58 PM
  1. I really don't like the ortiz one but Lowrie's and Jacoby's are soo funny. Obviously these songs aren't serious, but they're funny as anything. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that either.
