Papi starts at first

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff September 26, 2008 03:40 PM

The lineups are in, and the most notable news is that David Ortiz will make his first start of the season at first base, while Mike Lowell will return to the lineup in Papi's usual designated hitter
spot.

Ortiz has not played first base since Game 4 of the World Series last Oct. 28 at Colorado.

Lowell, bothered by a hip injury, is back in the lineup for the first time since Sept. 16.

The lineups:

Red Sox
1. Jacoby Ellbury, CF
2. Jed Lowrie, SS
3. David Ortiz,1B
4, Kevin Youkilis, 3B
5. Jason Bay LF
6. Mike Lowell, DH
7. Mark Kotsay, RF
8. Kevin Cash, C
9. Gil Velazquez, 2B
-- Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP

Yankees
1. Johnny Damon, LF
2. Derek Jeter, SS
3. Bobby Abreu, RF
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Jason Giambi, 1B
6. Xavier Nady, DH
7. Robinson Cano, 2B
8. Chad Moeller, C
9. Brett Gardner, CF
--Alfredo Aceves, SP

  1. Papi at first under wet field conditions? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

  1. Papi at first batting third in wet field conditions? Sounds like he's getting one at-bat and getting out of the game without playing the field.

  1. Papi batting third and playing first getting one at bat without playing the field? Sounds like this game is being held at Yankee Stadium.

Hey pink hat, the home team bats in the bottom of the first inning after they take the field...

  1. With Cash catching Dice K I bet Dice K gives up lots of runs early and ends up having a shorter than usual outing.

  1. Papi at first? No problem!! In Tito we trust!!

  1. How would he not play the field??

  1. How would he get an at bat without playing the field again?

  1. Mike, they are at home, NY bats first. Are you a fan?

  1. I agree, they can't be serious about Ortiz at first on a wet field. Sure, on a dry field give him a chance to play there again in a meaningless game, just in case . . . you know what . . . Don't want to risk it in the playoffs.

  1. This is obviously to get him some work at first on the chance they make the World Series and lose the DH in NL ballparks. It is a good idea.

  1. I love the pink hat comment... Also, Nick, what's shorter then "Usual" for Dice K? 2 1/3 innings? 4?

Posted by Mike September 26, 08 04:34 PM
  1. Dice-K's probably getting a shorter than usual start anyways.

Either does Papi at first under dry conditions.

  1. I love how people question whenever Ortiz plays first considering he's done so successfully through two World Series' and came up with the twins as a 1B. He can do more than just hit people... And with his numbers the way they are this year, he would probably have been a better fielder than hitter this season...

  1. Um, he's batting third, so he's play one inning in the field, bat once, then there would be a new 1B in the second. You guys really aren't that smart, are you.

  1. Considering this game is probably not going to get played today, this is how I would have done the lineup card:

    1. Kevin Cash, CF
    2. Mark Kotsay, SS
    3. Hideki Okajima,1B
    4. Terry Francona, 3B
    5. Justin Masterson, LF
    6. A Fathead Of Manny Ramirez, DH
    7. Johnny Pesky, RF
    8. No One, C
    9. Gil Velazquez, 2B
    -- Alex Cora, SP

Have some fun with it, Tito.

    Parking: $50
    Torrential downpours: free
Tarp not coming off the field tonight or we manage
2 innings before getting rained out: INFURIATING!

  1. IF the game tonight is played, Pai should be in a rain suit under cover..he isnt tha fastest guy in any position. Let's not risk him slip sliding all the way out of the playoffs for a somewhat meaningless game..we're in the playoffs, forget trying to win the division.

  1. Despite their meteorological optimism, I don't think they're going to get this game in, in which case we can all stop worrying about it!

  1. They are even going to play tonight - who cares

  1. THIS IS A JOKE LINE-UP - NO WAY THEY ARE PLAYING THE GAME

Posted by JEFF September 26, 08 04:56 PM
  1. Pedroia's not playing tonight -- and that isn't notable?? . . .

I'm sure Theo is wanting to give Papi a chance to play a little first base before the World Series, and they're trying to give Lowell some batting practice without as much chance of re-injury. (His latest tweak happened while he was fielding a ball from 3rd . . . it takes a little patience to get a guy back up from an injury status to post-season play.)

The rain does worry me a little, though . . . If they do end up playing it tonight, though, it should be a fun one! . . .

  1. Mike are you a Yankee fan? or a Sox fan? think before you write!

Posted by Oscar September 26, 08 04:58 PM
  1. This makes a lot of sense, weather conditions aside. Drew and especially Lowell are more likely to be able to play as DH with their injuries, and so Ortiz at first gives them this option.

  1. Papi had to play first at some point this weekend. He didn't play in any of the road interleague games this year so he need a little practice!

Posted by Jimmy September 26, 08 05:08 PM
  1. They won't play-they just open up so they can sell concessions for 3 hours and then "postpone" the game. They know exactly what they're doing. Greedy f&*$!

  1. I have tickets for tonight's game and won't be in the seat since it is a total monsoon out there and no game should be played. But, this is about greed not baseball and certainly not about any comfort for the fans who blew big bucks on this game. They want to avoid a makeup game and so they are going to try to get in the requisite amount of playing time to make it official and then dash like loons to the locker room. I asked the Red Sox no less than 4 times during the day whether they would postpone the game and the official word was "it is not a Red Sox decision but one that comes from MLB." I read an more telling article on the NYMets site (NY is also having terrible weather) which had the "schedule lady" from MLB explain that it is difficult this time of year to find a makeup time and that once MLB decides to postpone, they have to run it through the union to get permission to play an extra makeup game or some such nonsense. I think I will never buy Red Sox tickets again, not that anyone will miss me, I know, but it seems like watching my new HD t.v is a better deal. Hope the Yankees swamp them.
