Quick inning for Byrd
Three up, three down.
Adam Lind watched a 2-2 pitch pass him by. Rod Barajas flew one out to center. Scott Rolen grounded out to short.
Rolen's barely been back in the lineup two weeks and his numbers this month (.237, seven strikeouts, nine hits) are pretty tough.
The all-star told MLB.com that the shoulder injury that had kept him out of the lineup also had him questioning how much baseball he had in him.
"I'll tell you, I wasn't sure," Rolen said. "It hit me about three weeks ago or a month ago, whenever we were standing at my locker. I was throwing some false positives out there, because I wasn't sure where I was. I knew that I couldn't get to the baseball.
"I knew that I had dug as deep as I could dig and I worked as hard as I could work and I couldn't get to the baseball. That doesn't give me much confidence and you don't feel real good about your career or your future.
"I think I can get to the baseball right now. I feel confident that I can get to it and I'm excited."
Meanwhile, A.J. Burnett just buzzed through the Sox 5-6-7 hitters, getting ground balls out of Sean Casey and Jason Bay (super-close play at first; laser throw from Jay shortstop Marco Scutaro) and sitting Jed Lowrie down swinging.
Jays 1, Sox 0 through two innings.
