Rays surge ahead, 5-4
After Dan Johnson's home run tied the game, Fernando Perez doubled to center field with one out. Catcher Dioner Navarro doubled down the left-field line off Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, driving in Perez for the go-ahead run.
The Red Sox got out of the inning but now need a rally in the ninth if they are going to overtake the Rays for first place in the American League East.

Is it fair to ask if the two meaningless outs Papelbon was called on to get Sunday, followed by the 4-out save last night, had anything to do this? He was getting crushed.
Should have been an easy save. And then Tek can't even get a bunt down. Gotta have someone come through at this time of theyear.
The inability of Papabom to develop anything but a fastball and his manager for using him three days in a row was a formula for disaster last night. Further the ineptitude of Tito to act decisively by pinchhitting for Veritek or waiting too long to run Ellsbury into the game just added to the frustration. Chewing seeds and making inane comments after games does not constitute a good manager.
