Schilling takes a shot at New York fans
Curt Schilling hasn't thrown a pitch for the Red Sox this season, but he's still managing to toss a few fastballs by New York fans.
The rehabbing righthander shared his thoughts yesterday on reports of New Yorkers roaring with delight when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady went down with a knee injury Sunday.
"The euphoria in New York is palpable," Schilling said during his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI. "The Yankees suck this year and they are bitter and mad and making excuses over that. Now they got Tom [Brady] going down so New York's excited. It's unfortunate, but when you crawl to the top of the pile you will have people trying to knock you down."
The Big Apple tabloids wasted no time jumping on Schilling's New York knock. The Post: SCHILLING RIPS NEW YORK FANS -- AGAIN:
Schilling apparently forgot there are two baseball teams in New York - and the Mets are in first place. And another New York team, the Giants, beat Brady and the Patriots in last year's Super Bowl. But why let the facts get in the way of a perfectly good rant?
After blasting New York fans for being enthused over Brady's injury, Schilling took the time to remind fans that he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks when they beat the Yankees in the 2001 World Series.
"I was front row and center when their 'dynasty' ended," Schilling said.
The Daily News also reported on Curt's comments and got some reaction from New York fans:
"He's saying the truth," said Ariel Ramos, 17, a high school student at Kennedy in the Bronx. "I can't be mad."Pedro Rosa, 33, a Brooklyn security guard, agreed the Yankees were awful - but warned that New England could suffer a tough fall and winter.
"[Schilling] should watch his mouth," Rosa said. "Last time I checked, Boston doesn't have Manny Ramirez. As for Brady, he's right. What do they need him for? So they could go 18-1?"
In other Schilling happenings, the Providence Journal's Sean McAdam writes today that the Red Sox denied permission to TBS in the network's attempt to have Schilling on one of its postseason announcing teams: Red Sox decide to muzzle Schilling during playoffs

Is there any remote chance that Schilling will simply shut up someday? He does not speak for all Red Sox fans, or probably even a small minority of them, with his views on almost anything outside of how to throw a pitch in a big league game. How does he know feelings of glee in New York are "palpable' concerning Brady getting hurt? Is he hanging out in neighborhood bars down there?
In the meantime, he owes the Red Sox something like eight million bucks for pressuring them to re-sign him for the season when he knew he had a bum shoulder.
Simply because he could pitch does not make him or his opinions anymore important than anyone else. or anyone else's views, when it comes to speaking publicly on matters that are not directly about baseball games.
My case in point - could you imagine Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley getting on NESN and firing a rant about how much the Yankees and their fans "suck?" Of course not. Eck has that ingredient called "class."
I dislike the Yankees as much as the next Red Sox fan - but I am not so stupid to ever say the "dynasty has ended." The Yankees may miss the playoffs for the first time in 14 years! They have won 27 World Series. It's a great joy to beat them - but it is utterly childish to mouth off the way Shilling does. He's an embarrassment. Why can't he retire gracefully, pay back the eight mil and move to the woods down south someplace?
Well, as a Giants fan (who also happens to be a Red Sox fan and a Celtics fan-- and this IS possible, especially when you lived in Western Massachusetts as a kid in the late 1960's), that one paper is right: The Giants beat Brady and the Pats. Giant fans actually might muster some sympathy for the Pats right now.
Not me, mind you...but SOME Giant fans might.
Replying to the Daily News interview with Pedro, I ask why is it he thinks we "New Englanders will have a tough winter " ? are we going to be forced to watch the Knicks ?
I am a Patriots fan living in New Jersey and can tell you that the exuberance of the NY media, over Tom Bradys' injury, has been disgusting!!!! Curt Schillings' observations on this particular topic seem to be correct.
schilling is bored and needs someone to listen to him.Dan Shaugnessy is right! He is a blowhard. As far as NY fans go they are animals as it is.NY mets wont go far if they rteach the playoffs.Pedro Martinez? What a bust! But Schilling does have a big mouth and and its a tired act to listen too every few months.Shut Schilling and go pitch a product I would never use!And Im from Boston!
Schilling is a complete *ss! WTF is he talking about? Did he go to the streets of NY and ONLY interview Yankee fans? Where is this baseless dribble coming from. I am a die hard Yankee fan and would never revel in anyone's injury. You do that and it comes back to your team ten fold. Plus we could care less about the Pats. It's a total different sport. Who cares? Has NO affect on Yankee fans. I think Curt was a little lonely and he needed some media attention...pathetic! The only person I am glad may have a "season ending injury" is North Korea's Kim Jong-il. Let's hope his "career" is over....just like CU*N*T SCHILLING's!
He's an idiot. Maybe he forgot that after the Cheatriots won their first Super Bowl, as they were getting off the plane, the crowd was chanting "Yankees suck". Maybe he needs a reminder when comparing the two fanbases. Oh, that's right, he wasn't around beantown to remember that happening.
Good grief is Schilling embarrassing. You'd think he could at least shut up when he doesn't even pitch here anymore. I don't want to know anymore about his politics, his thoughts on New Yorkers or what kind of peanut butter he prefers... but apparently, he didn't get the memo that WE DON'T CARE!
Is there a large segment of bitter NYers that cheered Brady's injury? I'm sure there were. Would many of us have done the same had it been Brett Favre, Arod or Jeter? I'm sure some would.
Let it go man. Schilling is the epitome of an ignoramus. To paraphrase Triumph: "he's like a super-ignoramus, built from parts of lesser ignoramuses." Can't wait until he's out of here (assuming he'll shut up then).
I wouldn't be bragging about the Giants beating a hobbled Tom Brady last year. Even with his injury Brady still had better stats than MVP Eli Manning. A healthy Brady and it would have been an even bigger victory than he had against the Giants in December of last season.
I'm not suprised they are cheering Brady's injury. The loudest cheer they gave last year was when Chad Pennington was rolling on the ground hurt in last years opening game. Classless riff raff. That's New York fans.
I wish Schill wouldn't let his emotions get the better of him. I know how to settle this: a cage match between him and Graig Nettles.
"Is there a large segment of bitter NYers that cheered Brady's injury? I'm sure there were. Would many of us have done the same had it been Brett Favre, Arod or Jeter? I'm sure some would."
Um, speak for yourself, J.P. Any true sports fan wants to be the best by beating the best- which is to agree with Mike about Giants having to know they beat the Pats with a beat up QB and run-down O-line. I would never cheer Jeter or Favre getting injured, because one, its really pathetic and bad karma, and two, when we beat the Yankees and the Jets, I dont want anyone to be able to go back and say we may have won, but it was against a team missing its star players or riddled with injury.
Jets fans were cheering in the stadium last year when their own player Chad Pennington was rolling on the ground hurt. We're suprised they're cheering Brady's injury? New York fans have always been this bad. It wasn't for no reason the Bruins had to go into the stands at Madison Garden and lay a beat down on some of them.

Good for Suzanne of NJ for telling the truth. NYC papers were drooling while laughing and lovin' it over Brady's injury. Just a bunch of knuckle dragging mouth breathing trash they are. And to the NYY fan who says 'Yankee fans don't care about the Pats'. Get Real. The NYY and NYG fans are pretty much the same. Add that to the fact that WHATEVER HAPPENS TO BRING BOSTON FANS DOWN IS A GOOD THING is their collective mindset. I can never feel anything but hostility towards them. And, no, I don't have issues. Hey NY, take your issues and cram 'em.
Schilling should really go play with his toy soldier collection and shut up. I bet Schilling wasn't embarrassed by his father like his kids are with theirs
Hahahah I love seeing schilling get under the skin of some new yorkers who can dish it but can't take it. Normally I think the dude's an idiot but this time he's spot on. New Yorkers are just mad and bitter(and especially the media there), their golden boys the Yanks are sucking it up this year.
Face it...the Yankees are getting what they deserve for giving their long time great manager Joe Torree an insulting offer. 12 years, 12 playoff appearances and 4 WS and that's the thanks he gets? Some crap deal that basically said, were not interesting in having you here. If the Sox did that to Tito I'd be pissed! When TB returns the Pats will be back on top...the Yankees, face it their time is over.
Also they can pretend they care about the Mets but having lived in NY for some time I can tell you its 90 percent about the Yanks, 10 percent about everyone else. If the other teams are doing well NY Media and fans will bandwagon but most of the time they care about the Yanks.
Keep it up Schill!
I have been a fan of the Yankees and Giants for years. I have taken and given it to and from Boston fans, many of whom are my friends. I think what people ar emissing here is that I don't think that most people are happy about Brady's injury. He seems to ber a good guy and he brings a lot to the game.
I think what we are seeing with us New York fans, as well in many other cities is the relief that many football fans are feeling because now, a number of the teams that had less of a chance to be relevant this year, now have a much greater chance of their team's season meaning something. That makes a fan feel good.
I also feel that Shilling is a blowhard. He has had his time in the sun, which is perhaps not a good thing when your wife runds the SHADE fouindation, but he clearly just likes to hear himself talk. As a Yankee fan, I can say the Shilling is now as irrelevant as the Yankees are this year. The difference is that the Yankees will be back, which whether or not the Red Sox fans want to admit it or not, is a good thing for the sport and for the rivalry. Curt Shilling will not be back and that is a good thing for everyone. The Red Sox don't need him any more, the city doesn't need him anymore and the sport doesn't need him anymore.
Mr. Shilling - good riddance.
Seriously.... since when are NY fans supposed to be civil? Haven't we all come to expect this type of behavior from them? They're bitter people in general and they take pleasure in others misery, I'm firneds with lots of NY'ers and they're all the same... sure the Giants pulled off a miracle last yr and they should be congratulated for pulling it off. But I still think it's sad they take so much joy in this.
I live in Chicago and i hear the same sentiment from football fans out here too. Everyone's a hater. It's ok though peeps.... when the Pats finish the season 11-5 and are still in the playoffs, everyone will be enjoying their crow.
"Richard Farnaby - 'Yankee fans don't care about the Pats'. Get Real."
Dude I am very "real" and I could care less about the Pats. I saw your post so I sent an email to 10 of my closest Yankee fan friends and sorry but they agree with me. Who cares about Brady? This has no impact on the Yankees as an organization or its fans. We don't care if he is hurt, who he is dating, which model he impregnated or anything else about Brady. Heck - in our eyes even the Red Sox only register as our number 2 rival. The Friggin Mets are our number one rival and we would rather lose 10 ALCS's to the Sux than lose one World Series to the Muts.
You people in Boston need to realize we really don't care about Boston sports fans or their teams. They are insignificant in our minds.

Um, Erin, I'm not talking about EVERYONE. Which is why I said "SOME". I don't think everyone would. But you're naive if you think that a decent number of Boston fans would cheer an injury to a star NY player. That's America today. People are poor sports and have no idea why they follow the games.

Charlie is demonstrating that "Yankee Class" we here in New England are so often reminded of. Clearly the truth hurts! Yankee fans were very good at giving it but fail miserably when it comes to taking it. If I had a dollar for every time a Yankee fan mentioned fans chanting Yanks suck at a Pats parade I would be very rich. Get over it. Why do you care? Why do you Yankee fans feel they get to dictate how we celebrate? Talk about obsessed!
Charlie,
Then why are you reading our paper?
Wouldn't it be nice if more ballplayers had Schillng's passion and honesty and would actually say what they think instead of mindless cliches? Did any of you see Bull Durham? Too many ex-jocks are not talking heads on media shows and repeat stupid things like "that should stay inside the locker room" or "it's nobody's business but ours." Wrong. It's a public sport, paid with customers who deserve honest reaction and accurate stories about the ongoings of the teams we support.
Too bad fans blast a guy like Schil who actually gives them an honest reaction. Just forces more players to keep the media away and spin comic book stories instead of news reports.
Ex athletes love to say "you never played the game" as a way of discounting journalists. But watching pre-game show after post-game reaction, these jocks never learned what "the media" is. They are terrible and fans buy it. Schilling is refreshing even when you disagree. He even gets the likes of Charlie down in NY foaming at the mouth, which can't be a bad thing.
"The Friggin Mets are our number one rival and we would rather lose 10 ALCS's to the Sux than lose one World Series to the Muts...You people in Boston need to realize we really don't care about Boston sports fans or their teams. They are insignificant in our minds."
Thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever read... WHAT TRUE YANKEE FAN thinks the Mets are a bigger rival than the Sox??? And youre not going to get to the WS to lose to the Mets if you can't win an ALCS against the Sox, brainiac. And please spare me the crap about NY'ers being so cool they dont care about Boston teams.. .that is SUCH a crock of BS. Insignificant my foot!! Why do you think the media and NY fans are cheering Brady? News flash- EVERYONE cares about Brady, whether they love him or hate him, just like everyone loves or hates the Yankees and Sox.. because they are all RELEVANT.
I don't always agree with what he says, but I think he's hilarious.
I just was over at the NYDN boards and I had to laugh. Most people were posting things like, "NY Fans would never wish harm on another person, so I wish Curt would get hit by a truck for saying that!" NY fans ripped Pap in the All Star Parade and even shouted threats to his pregnant wife. And the message boards were lit up with people cheerful about what happened to Brady (who they were fans of I do not know). Some fans are sorry, others are delighted. And the NY message boards aren't bitter over the Yankee's rather lackluster year...instead, they seem to be jealous of the Sox. Watch...some NYY fan will post a reply to me and say something along the lines of "why should we be jealous over your 7 rings when we have 26?" because they are like Al Bundy from Married With Children: living in the past glory of four touchdowns in one game. Whatever.
Maybe shelling should learn to the difference between what the press writes and what the fans might actually think. Yeah, I'm a Giants and Yankee fan, so the cheatriots really never matter to me unless the Giants are playing them. And for the rest of you who make excuses for the Super Bowl (brady's foot hurt, beat up o-line) get a grip. By that time of year most football players are a little banged up. I don't care if brady had 3 healthy legs, he still wouldn't have gotten away from our pass rush. When you make excuses, you really sound whiney, so don't accuse NY fans of being whiney just because the newspapers make outrageous headlines to sell papers.
You people in Boston need to realize we really don't care about Boston sports fans or their teams. They are insignificant in our minds.
Then why did you post your thoughts on Boston.com? Your existence simultaneously disproves both the theory of evolution AND the theory of Intelligent Design. I didn't think that was possible ... so Kudos, moron.

Hey Mike (Post #9)...get over it...you lost...you LOST!
The Giants beat your great team. The Giants, who supposedly had no business being on the field with the GREAT PATRIOTS beat you guys in the BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON. Case closed. It's in the books. You can look it up.
If the Pats were so great, they should have been up by three touchdowns when Manning hit Tyree on that "lucky" play. They had no business being in a close game with such an "inferior" opponent.
Losers make excuses. I would expect more from Patriot fans than that.
You guys went 18-0.
We WON THE SUPER BOWL.
Deal with it.
Charlie-you care so little about the Pats and/or Boston that you decided to send a post to 10 of your friends? I seriously doubt that you actually have ten friends but I find it kind of ironic that you're posting on a Boston board, about something a Boston player said on a Boston station yet you care so little about the Pats and/or Boston. Not very smart are ya?
Maybe Schill went overboard...but GOT TO LOVE THE ANTI_YANKEE rhetoric. Nothing phony about him...hated NY when he was a Phillie. BTW...why would a true Boston fan give a rat's butt about what NY says or thinks about them??? I live in South Jersey and "love" New York just like Schilling does. Despite what most New Yorkers believe, there are other cities that have just as much to offer if not more than their self consumed inflated worth. New York media belittle every other city daily in their columns. Want proof...just read their columns.
Curt is almost gone now....he's quietly slipping away.......well, he's slipping away.
He's already become a parody of an empty headed jock who likes to spout off on AM radio with his wannabee warrior ball washers, this stuff is just icing on the cake.
I'm never seen an athlete with a more inflated sense of his own importance off the field. He is in a class by himself, and I'll almost miss him
I just wish he'd go away.
The Yankees were in the front row when they ended Boston's run in 2005? Remember that Curt? The great Boston massacre...it just might be a simple case of amnesia or just a desire to forget what the Yankees and the Blue Jays did (they were in second place) haha.
Schilling is the only professional baseball player that I know of who stated that his opponents suck, at least in quote. Plain and simple, the guy is a drama queen and likes the reactions to his outragious claims more than Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears combined. Why else would he run his mouth as if he were a season ticket holder behind the dugout, rather than present himself as a stand up athlete with a laundry list of accomplishments? Don't get me wrong, there have been plenty of times where I wanted to lash out an opposing team, or say something to get under their skin in the heat of the battle. However, upon thinking about how it would ultimately make me, as well as my teammates look, I never took that road. He not only made himself look rediculous, but also his team. Schilling continually brings up the past as he "recalled Boston's rally from three games back to beat New York in the 2004 AL championship series." Let's not forget that the Red Sox finished in second place in the AL East for a decade or so behind the Yanks, give or take a year, not to mention the Bombers' 26 world series championships. I'm not one to bring up the past, and I can acknowledge that the Yankees are, without a doubt, having their worst season in fifteen years. He says New York fans are bitter and mad? As a New York Yankee fan I would have to say that I am very angry at the year the team is having, but a fall from the top tends to happen from time to time. It seems as though the baseball community, Schilling included, has placed the Yankees on a pedistal and either A) get angry when they fail to come out on top or B) kick them when they're down and rub salt in the wound. Why? Because they have set the bar in the world of athletics. They have more championships than any other team, from any other sport, in history. Fans expect the best. Foes soak it in when they fail. Did you ever hear a member of the New York Yankees utter the words, "the Red Sox suck this decade" when they couldn't pull off an AL East Championship? Of course not. It's expected to hear the Boston and New York fans making "below the belt" comments about one another's teams. Schilling, however, just sounds like a media hungry adolescent. It is very puzzling to me that someone who has been recognized for such great achievements has to give cheap shot comments to get his name back in the papers.
