Scioscia announces rotation and roster

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff September 28, 2008 06:40 PM

ANAHIEM - John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders will pitch the first three games of the AL Division Series in that order starting Wednesday, Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced after Sunday's 7-0 win over the Texas Rangers.

The Angels finished the season with their 100th win behind an encouraging performance by lefthander Joe Saunders, who went six innings and allowed two hits.

Scisocia said he elected to go with 10 pitchers and 15 positional players for the first round against the Sox. The most notable player left off was veteran reliever Justin Speier. He was left off in favor of rookie Kevin Jepsen, the hard-throwing former USA Olympian.

Here's the roster:

Pitchers (10): John Lackey, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Jon Garland, Jered Weaver, Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields, Darren Oliver, Jose Arredondo, Kevin Jepsen.

Positional players (15): Erick Aybar, Brandon Wood, Jeff Mathis, Chone Figgins, Garret Anderson, Kendry Morales, Juan Rivera, Gary Mathews Jr., Mark Teixeira, Vladimir Guerrero, Robb Quinlan, Mike Napoli, Howie Kendrick, Torii Hunter, Reggie Willits.

  1. The Angels played in one of the worst divisions in baseball. I think the Sox will win this series in 6 games.

  1. That's a terrible thing to say about Torii Hunter!

  1. We are in trouble if it takes us 6 games to win a best-of-five series

  1. It's a 5 game series, so the Sox can't win the series in 6! Fear the Angels -- they are the most complete team in baseball!

Brilliant prediction. However, not only will the Angels win this Series in 4 games or less, but the Series only has 5 possible games, so go ahead, win it in 6.

  1. Also sorry for the double posts; but when a game is over can you start a new thread; that says game over and the score maybe??? It will make it easier for the ones following you on a phone to keep updated with your posts.

  1. If the Sox win in 6, it will be an even more amazing feet then their comeback against the Yankees in 04.

    That's because it's a 5 game series!

  1. Why is Pedroia not playing in the nightcap??? The batting title is very much in reach. Tito's got no right to deprive him of something that will mean alot to Dustin years from now.

  1. The Sox should have no problem taking care of the Angels.

  1. Since AROD is not playing right now (dont know why any of them wouldn't since its the last game of the season), did he already go home [missing from the dogout?].

  1. I like the Sox pitching. The x factor is Beckett. If he regains his old form Sox will sweep. If not, I still like them in five.

  1. There could be 6 games if they had to play at the old Garden.

I think the Sox are weak, but the Angels are the worst 100 win team in history. Their +/- is like 60 runs. I think we'll see a lot of bad baseball on both sides. Well, not a lot, as MLB is the only major sports league that still believes in the shortened mini-series to determine playoffs. Archaic and ridiculous. I can't believe the owners allow this to continue.

  1. Normally I would have to agree that the Sox would win (based upon previous history); however, this year, the Angels has an 8 and 1 record against the Sox and some of that was Sox + Manny. I'm sticking with my Halos this time :)

  1. What would be even nicer is if the f-ing networks would announce the times of the games. I was smart enough to buy tickets here in SoCal before it was determined the Sox would play Anaheim, but neither I or my girlfriend know if we can get time off from work to go of if we will even need to. Hopefully its an evening game (10pm back there)

  1. Seriously i just HUGE RESPECT for here. I have relied on this blog for my daily life. They fell of the face of the earth after game 1. This is not exceptable, giving the time of the year. Now i have to check espn if Dustin won the batting title or even played in the 2nd game. Also please give me a new blog post after a game has completed. It makes it easier. I live in AC, NJ and have limited insight into the SOX from my home base. Please let us know what is going on right now.

  1. Wow, some really dumb comments. Mostly about the Angels playing in the worst division in baseball. Even if the AL West was weak we took 8 of 9 games from you this year and beat all of your best pitchers. And now Beckett is hurt. Not to mention Lowell and Drew are hurt. This year the Red Sox get to go through what the Angels went through last year. The Angels are in great health now.

  1. Sox will sweep... for the third time in a row!

Posted by MS September 29, 08 01:30 AM
  1. Hey gd, how can you use the bad division card on the account that the angels have taken 8 of 9 from the Red Sox this year. Suck on that shit.

Posted by foxredcorn September 29, 08 01:35 AM
  1. You people are retards look at your record this year against the best team in baseball.

  1. I got my tix for game two and five living out here in california. Believe it or not, I spent a total of $60 for two games. $60 won't even get me one game in The Fens for the regular season most times. .

    I can't wait. I'm predicting Sox in 5.

Posted by Andrew September 29, 08 02:37 AM
  1. The Angles will sweep the Mannyless sox, there will be no game4.

Posted by ed sabatka September 30, 08 01:56 AM
  1. Funny thing is that even with Beckett out, our next two starters have more wins than any of the Halos. ill take Lester and Dice K over Lackey and Santana. I will say that Tori Hunter makes the Angels better than last year but another thing to consider is how hard the Halos pitched KRod this year. The guy pitched every possible save opportunity. I think he is going to be tired and I think he is going to caugh up a couple late leads.
