FINAL: Rays 10, Sox 3

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff September 17, 2008 10:27 PM

IT'S OVER (10:27, MID 9, 10-3 RAYS)
And mercifully so. Chad Bradford slammed the door on the Red Sox in the ninth. He hit Sean Casey and allowed no other base runners. Not a pretty ballgame tonight. The Rays paid the Sox back for that thumping Monday to move ahead by two games in the AL East. Silver lining: The Twins are losing, 6-4, in the top of the eighth in Cleveland. If that result holds, Boston's magic number for the wild card will be four.

TAMPA RUNS IT UP (10:15, BOT 8, 10-3)
David Pauley couldn't keep the truncated mojo created by Delcarmen and Okajima going, allowing a mess of hits and two more runs. John Farrell came out to talk with Pauley, which only led to an RBI single by Pena and an early exit. Pauley recorded only one before Chris Smith came on.

ROLLING ALONG (10:03, MID 8, 8-3 RAYS)
Not much action here as the Red Sox try to come back. It's now David Pauley, replacing Hideki Okajima, vs. the impressive J.P. Howell. Ortiz flew out this inning, likely ending his bid for a three-homer night. Okajima pitched one inning, recording two strike outs. Pauley is Boston's seventh pitcher.

SEVEN UP, SIX DOWN FOR DELCARMEN (9:35, END 6, 8-3 RAYS)
With pitches, Delcarmed restored some order to the game for the Red Sox. He retired the first five batters he faced, getting groundball outs from Iwamura and Barlett to begin the inning, before issuing a walk to Carlos Pena. He limited the damage to only that walk, striking out Longoria on an 82-mph changeup. Just imagine what the score might be tonight without David Ortiz and Manny Delcarmen.

YOUKILIS STRANDED (9:25, MID 6, 8-3 RAYS)
Kevin Youkils led off with a bloop double down the right field line, Mark Kotsay followed with a pop to short, the exact kind of out you don't want with a man at second and none out. He is now 1 for his last 23. Before the game, Francona was asked if there might be any options beside Kotsay, even though the only other option seemed to be call-up Jonathan Van Every. Francona's respose: Kotsay is "going to play. We're not going to play Pawtucket down the stretch. I have no intention of not playing. He'll hit himself right out of this one." Not yet. Jed Lowrie struck out, then Casey hit another pretty hard ball, but to center for out three.

DELCARMEN MOWS THEM DOWN (9:16, END 5, 8-3 RAYS)
Three easy for outs Delcarmen, whose sharp performance have come a bit too late. Three up, three down. Ruggiano, Gross, and Perez.

DELCARMEN ENTERS (9:12, MID 5, 8-3 RAYS)
The Sox use their fifth pitcher of the night as Manny Delcarmen enters the game. Ortiz nearly got the Sox back in the game, but his deep fly died in the outfield. With the off day tomorrow, Francona is free to use his bullpen will less of a penalty than usual.

SOX KNOCK OUT GARZA (9:03, TOP 5, 8-3)
Pedroia singled with two outs in the fifth, pushing Ellsbury, who reached on a fielder's choice, to second base. Rays manager Joe Maddon had had enough, and Garza, who had been acting as the ace of sorts for the Rays, is now on the bench. Grant Balfour is in.

AT LAST, A ZERO (8:49, END 4, 8-3 RAYS)
The Rays didn't score in an inning for the first time tonight. The inning did included some more fielding adventures by the Sox pitchers. Aybar hit a strange, looping pop directly over the mound. Aardsma stumbled off the back of the hill, stuck his glove out and awkwardly stabbed at the ball, which fell harmlessly to the turf. Lowrie or Pedroia maybe could have been more aggressive and saved Aardsma from making a tricky play. That was the Red Sox third error tonight the official scorer changed it to a hit. I agree -- it was just too funky of a hit. This is still turning into one of the Red Sox most unsightly games of the year.

Manny Delcarmen is waming up in the Boston bullpen.

TOUGH NIGHT FOR THE MAYOR (8:41, MID 4, 8-3 RAYS)
The Red Sox couldn't push any more across, in part because Casey was robbed for the second time tonight. He lashed a ball to the right side that one-hopped as Iwamaura dove and made a backhanded stab. He didn't field the ball cleanly, but he knocked it down, picked it up and fired to first in plenty of time.

Aardsma is still in the game.

ORTIZ UNLOADS (8:33, TOP 4, 8-3 RAYS)
If they awarded runs based on how far a home run travels, the Red Sox might be ahead. Ortiz jacked another home run, an absoulte bomb. It looked like it flew over the D Ring catwalk, but really it just hit it and stayed in the catwalk. That's the fourth ball that has ever been lodged in a cat walk; two have happened this series. On Monday, Jason Bay hit the C Ring catwalk for a home run. Anyway, good Lord, what a shot by Ortiz. This is his third multi-homer game this season, the 33d of his career.

THE THIRD INNING IS OVER! (8:27, END 3, 8-2 RAYS)
Aardsma got Bartlett to bounce back to him. He successfully fielded the ball and threw to third. That was ugly. That half inning took 27 minutes, needed four pitchers, and saw nine batters. And now the Red Sox get to try to chip away at a six-run defecit against Matt Garza.

A WALK, AND A NEW PITCHER (8:24, BOT 3, 8-2 RAYS)
Lopez walked Iwamura to load the bases with two outs, and Francona called for Aardsma, the Red Sox fourth pitcher of the inning. It's getting ugly. The Red Sox might try to forget about this game before it's even over.

Lopez did not get an out, made an error, walked a batter, and gave up a hit. That might be the bizzaro pitching equivalent of a Gordie Howe hat trick. Jason Bartlett is up.

EGADS (8:20, BOT 3, 8-2 RAYS)
Lopez made a shield-your-eyes error that gave the Rays another run. Gross topped a bounding ball toward the mound, moving at about the speed a 10-year-old throws a baseball. Lopez stabbed at it with his glove, and the ball kept on bouncing -- somehow, he totally missed the ball. Longoria trotted home when Lopez's throw, after he recovered, was late. Perez compounded the issues when he roped a single to right. It's really not your night when Fernando Perez has two RBIs before the third inning is over.

Iwamura is up. David Aardsma is throwing in the 'pen.

HANSACK OUT, LOPEZ IN (8:13, BOT 3, 6-2 RAYS)
Devern Hansack recorded one out, a strike out of Justin Ruggiano, before Terry Francona called for Javier Lopez. He enters with two outs and men on first and third. All those fans are making some headache-inducing noise right now, even as Lopez throws his warm-ups. Gabe Gross is up.

RAYS PILE ON (6-2, BOT 3, 6-2 RAYS)
Aybar hit a bouncer up the middle, which Pedroia, somehow, tracked down in shallow center with a dive. Rays third base coach Tom Foley windmilled Longoria home, anyway, and Pedroia buzzed the ball home. The throw tailed a bit toward the third base side, and Longoria made a great slide, inside of the plate, to avoid Cash's tag and score a run. Aybar scampered to second. He went to third when Hansack's pick-off attempt rolled into center field. He's still on third, and Navarro, who walked, is on first.

Wakefiled threw 51 pitches, 34 of them strikes. Unlike in Texas about 11 days, control was not the problem. The Rays just smacked him around. He is charged with six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings, and he allowed three home runs.

This game is the Rays' sixth sellout of the year, with 36,048 in attendance.

WAKEFIELD DONE, HANSACK IN (8:03, BOT 3, 5-2 RAYS)
Tim Wakefield is through after he allowed a double to Evan Longoria with one out in the third inning. Wakefiled, so far, has allowed five runs on six hits; he's responsible for Longoria, too. For the second time in three starts, Wakefield did not make it out of the third inning. To be fair, the start in between he threw eight shutout innings against the Blue Jays at Fenway. Still, this is troubling sign. Will the inconsistency give Paul Byrd an advantage for becoming the fourth playoff starter?

DOUBLING UP (8:00, MID 3, 5-2 RAYS)
Garza struck out Kevin Cash with a nice slider to open the inning. Jacoby Ellsbury beat out his second hit of the night, a smash to first off Carlos Pena's glove. He was erased, though, when Dustin Pedroia hit into an inning-ending, 5-4-3 double play.

MORE FIREWORKS (7:48, BOT 2, 5-2 RAYS)
The knuckleball doesn't seem to be knucling tonight, dome or no dome. With one out, Gabe Gross and Fernando Perez -- the eighth and ninth batters -- slammed back-to-back home runs, Gross's to right, Perez's to left. Devern Hansack is throwing in the bullpen already. Iwamura is up with the bases empty, still one out.

NOTHIN' DOIN' (7:42, MID 2, 3-2 RAYS)
Things quieted down as Garza retired Jed Lowrie, Sean Casey, and Coco Crisp in order. Casey had some tough luck in a rare start, lining to center and getting robbed by Fernando Perez's great diving catch.

Of note: Wakefield's rocky first comes as a surprise. He's always excelled in domes, and Tropicana Field is no different. Before tonight, he had a 9-2 record and a 2.45 ERA here. He also had three saves in four chances.

SOX LOSE LEAD QUICK (7:36, END 1, 3-2 RAYS)
Pena came through with a sacrifice fly to center field. After Bartlett stole second and Wakefield retired Evan Longoria, Willy Aybar, making his first start this series and first career at-bat against Wakefield, clobbered a home run well over the left field fence. Wakefiled escaped with no further, which isn't saying much.

ORTIZ CRUSHES ONE (7:26, BOT 1, 2-0 SOX)
David Ortiz destoryed his second home run of the series in the top of the first, pummelling a 1-1 change from Matt Garza well over the right field fence. It was a classic Ortiz shot -- he spun slowly, flicked his bat toward the Red Sox dug out, then began his home run lumber around the bases. Jacoby Ellsbury, who led off with a single, scored on the blast.

The Rays are trying to respond in the bottom half. Akinori Iwamura led off with a single, stole second and wen to third on Jason Bartlett's opposite-field single off Tim Wakefield. Carlos Pena, a developing Sox killer, is up now with no outs.

  1. Is it just me or does Heidi Whatley (sp??) interview Evan Longoria every single time the Red Sox play the Rays? I mean why not an interview with someone a bit more pedestrian looking... Dioner Navarro maybe??
I don't want to suggest a bias in sources. I'm just calling em as I sees them.

JESUS! Wake just gave up another bomb. He's killing me. Just killing me

  1. Uh... make that TWO more bombs. Three already... hmmmn... can we say Bullpen before this thing gets completely out of hand???

  1. Hack Sack?! Are we trying to lose this game? If we lose tonight, it's wild card all the way. If we win, we're in the driver's seat. Did anyone explain this to Francona. This lineup looks AAA enough, but now HackySack? I'm sure he's fine, but he had like 4 ERA at AAA. Not exactly the guy i want to see right now.

  1. If Ellsbury doesn't steal right here, I may blow a capulary.

These posts would be more useful if I could see them in something close to real time and see what others are saying as well... again... just sayin'

  1. He didn't steal. Double play. Go figure. SIGH.

PS you need a return to blog button once you've submitted. It's a pain in the arse getting back here.

Really guys, this web stuff isn't that hard. Do you have anyone down there that is a web blog user?

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:00 PM
  1. Oh I see, I'm talking to myself here. Bummer. Think how lively an in-game blog could be if it actually was a tad more interactive! They are bringing in Hacksack. What a time for his 2007 debut. Sheesh. I'll be quiet now since I'm the only one chattering away.

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:05 PM
  1. Well, I was going to be quiet, but you asked... Will Wake lose the 4th spot? I sowmhow doubt it (as our many Hackysack gives up yet another run... I turn the volume down on the computer and turn it up on ESPN's Brewers v. Cubs game as it happens)

I don't think so. Wakefield will get at least one start. He's done so much in the past and been fairly clutch, plus he causes hitters such a problem adjusting that I think they give him one start. If he screws that up, the next series, if they get there could go to Byrd.

UNLESS, Wake volunteers for long duty, which as we all know he has done in the past. He's so valuable in saving a pen, etc. and now that Tavarez is gone, maybe he'll take that role.

Gee did Hackysack just panic and throw the ball away at 2nd? UM yes. hate to say I saw this coming, but... JUST SAYING!

  1. If we registered for the site and pinkie-swore to behave, maybe Adam wouldn't have to keep reviewing our comments. You know how it is on the 'net.

Also, this game looks like it will offer Mr. Kilgore ample opportunity to use the word 'vexing' again. So, if the game gets out of hand, there's at least that reason to stick around.

  1. What's the likelihood of the knuckleballer doing long relief duty in the bullpen? I love Wakefield, but I worry about consistency.

Posted by ndsmith September 17, 08 08:13 PM
  1. OK... add a walk to hackysack's illustrious appearance. Just setting up the ole DP I bet.
(Somhow?? from the earlier post. I guess I'm the one that needs an editor. Yikes).

Is it me or is this the longest inning since game 3 of the ALCS in 2004? This is like when the mafia shows up and wants to chat a bit first...

A Strikeout! WOW! And Francona is coming out to pull him! YAHOO... The mafia talked too long, they had to scoot... we are alive (missing some fingers perhaps, but alive!)

  1. If anyone sees Jason Bay will you please tell him that baseball players are not to
have sex in January. WE are IN a PENANT RACE!!!!

  1. It appears I've hijacked my own little forum here. Bolstered with my robust feelings of sudden power, I ponder... what words of wisdom do i care to dispense now???

If Schilling can post 2,500-word unedited posts, why can't I?

Another run. 7-2... the hackysack move was a disaster, as was Wake's start. Lopez just tripped on his own feet. About as embarrasing as tripping at your graduation. If the Sox make a rally here, I'll be thrilled, but the look AWFUL so far.

The Brewers just busted out in the front. Talk about a team that needed some good news! ... Uh... make it 8-2. The mafia went and got coffee and have returned, and Farrell is coming out. Seriously, what's he going to say. "UH Javy, we're not doing too well here. Maybe can you try to get a guy out??"

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:20 PM
  1. And he walked the bases loaded. Nice chat Farrell. That worked.
They just showed Farrell ripping his hat off stomping through the dugout as Francona trudges out yet again. I suspect old John ain't too happy right now. What a disaster.
So now its Aardsma, the 26th man on the playoff roster (how much does that suck for him?? Colon will get his spot. Poor guy, Throws 99 and can't keep his job!). Well, the next week will be far less interesting. But my prediction from last week looks to come true. The Sox will be the what has to be the first team in playoff history to never start its playoff lineup once in a 162 game season!
I'm being optomistic, but I'm betting Drew and Lowell play in game 1 vs. Anaheim. So the lineup will be:
Ellsbury or Crisp (I'm not sure what Francona will do here... I suspect Ellsbury).
    Pedroia
    Ortiz
    Youk
    Drew
    Bay
    Lowell
    Lowrie
    Tek
Check the records... I strongly doubt that lineup has been posted once this year.

But I think they stopped approving my posts ... but maybe I'm paranoid.

  1. Another bomb by Ortiz. My how long we've waiting for this. Sort of anticlimatic at 8-3. The sox really need to mount a comeback. If they lose tonight, they lose he division. They start in Anaheim, on the road against the fully loaded and rested Angels. Somehow I see the repeat going away if they don't mount this challenge tonight.

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:35 PM
  1. UGH!!!
I turned the game off when Wakefield gave up his 3rd home run!!! Is it me or am I
the only one who sits here when Wakefield stinks and yells take him out!! Doesn't
Francona know yet that he's either on or not??? It doesn't take 7 stinkning runs to
    figure that out.
I've resigned myself to the fact that the Rays are a better and more clutch team then
the Red Sox this year. Whenever they need a win, they get it! The Red Sox are
hanging on and I feel like 2005 again-close but not good enough to win it all....

  1. I haven't been censored yet!

Gosh, I'm glad you said it Joe. Seriously, the kid was born like 36 hours ago. Does Bay watch Mad Men? If he did, he'd be in uniform right now, smoking a Lucky Strike, not cuddling his kid. Isn't this his third? Come on... it's a pennant race!
PS GOD, Casey is slow... he wasn't even in the picutre on that hit to second even though imwamura had to go chase it down after he batted it down.

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:42 PM
  1. How many Sox does it take to catch a pop up? I'm not sure because four guys surrounding the ball couldn't get it done.

Man, this team looks out of whack tonight. Bad time to play so crappy. I'm still holding out for the historic comeback where they all talk about how it just came together in the sixth inning or something like that.

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:47 PM
  1. your coverage stinks. Adam is an idiot. This team just is gutless and horrible. Wakefield shd be released tonight. I hope Bay enjoys his time away and his multimillion dollar contract while his team gets humiliated. There is simply nothing to play for now. IF these worthless losers get the wild card, they will be just HUMILIATED by the Angels in the first round. They are a disgrace to a great franchise and great fans and a lot of them shd pay--starting with the manager and the general manager.

Posted by jim kaplan September 17, 08 08:51 PM
  1. Come on Terry... did you see how close navarro just came to ripping a 2-run bomb after that pathetic drop of the pop up?? We still have life... something weird is going on here. Hold ON!

Why the hell is Delcarmen already warming in the pen??? Isn't he our late inning guy? I'm so confused. How do you go to Hackysack to Delcarmen that quick?

Francona: "Well Farrell, who do we use next? Smith?"
Farrell: "Well Terry, we have tomorrow off and if we don't win this game, we're pretty screwed."
Francona: "Good point. How about Delcarmen!"

    I don't know. I'm confused.

  1. I think Crisp's hot streak is officially over.

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 08:53 PM
  1. Good news as Mazz will not have to worry about this being a one run game tonight....

Posted by scooby September 17, 08 08:54 PM
  1. "This is still turning into one of the Red Sox most unsightly games of the year."

    Some would call it... vexing.
But then, you know, some wouldn't.

"Is it me or am I the only one who sits here when Wakefield stinks and yells take him out!!"

Well, sometimes Wake can settle down and still give the team some innings after the damage has been done. Some veteran pitchers can do this. Francona recognizes that.

    Not tonight, though.

  1. Sox have been choking all year. They get close but dont take over first place. This will be a one and done playoff series.

    Posted by rickb101 September 17, 08 08:59 PM
  1. If these comments came in 'real time' we could all "will" Ellsbury to steal a base.

Posted by Mister Snitch September 17, 08 09:01 PM
  1. Once again Ellsbury doesn't steal. Pedroia gets the hit, but he doesn't score. A run an inning and we're back in this, but we have to be more aggressive. So now can Ortiz hit a 3rd HR??

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 09:02 PM
  1. All Hail to the Rays! They deserve to be the AL East champs. They have beaten back the Sox at all critical moments. The sign of a champion. They are going to win 2 of 3 in each of these last series.

  1. I told my wife last night that Ortiz looked like he was back in his crouch more... steady on his legs, like I hadn't seen since his knee problems began. His swing still looks too loopy, and Balfour is poinding him high and tight right now, but he's getting to it and looks a bit more balanced. For the first time in months he looks like he's coming around...

    3-2, 2 out, 2 on, ... we need a little of that now ...

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 09:08 PM
  1. OH Man... so deep, but just a long out instead of an inspiring 3rd home run. Game of inches. Crap.

  1. we do not deserve to be in the playoffs--let's hope these clowns just choke and lose every game the rest of the season so the Twins can get the Wild Card. I mean I doubt if most of these guys will even show up for the playoffs anyway--their wives have to have babies and they probably can't be there!

  1. With Chicago losing, the magic number to clinch playoff is down to 4 now.

Posted by Khurram September 17, 08 10:06 PM
  1. Well, the Sox provide no magic as the last four innings have blurred into boredom. The air went out with Papi's Deep center blast that didn't make it out. My dinner however, was pretty magical... I made Halibut with saffron and artichoke hearts, marscopone ravioli with alfreado sauce... I do impress myself I have to admit.

Wild Card Run for the Sox in 2007? That's what we face. I'm checking flights down to Anaheim right now.

Posted by Scott from San Fran September 17, 08 10:07 PM
  1. Anger management Jim... Anger management. Make some food, drink some wine, let it go.

But without the slash and burn rheotric, tonight's been a complete flop from the manager on down (except for the glimmering light of Ortiz looking like the guy I named my black lab after!).

  1. "truncated mojo"

See, this is what keeps me coming back for more. Think you get insights like this from bums like Peter Gammons and Buster Olney? Think again.

  1. Wow a lot of whining going on here. I'm glad some of you are not on my team. You have to just keep grinding away and the next thing you know you have another World Series ring.

Posted by Joe September 17, 08 10:26 PM
  1. Isn't this a blog for Sox FANS?!?!

Sheesh... I'm in as much pain as everyone but calling them "gutless"? Or calling Tito a "moron"?

C'mon, folks. They have not clicked on all cylinders all year and yet the red hot Rays are the only burr in their side in the division.

Yeah, it looks bad tonight. But so what?

Any other team would've been done in June with what we've faced this year.

An off year for Wake and Beckett. Manny-gate. Tek's d-vorce. Drew's hot start then injury. This would have KILLED any other team.

Don't be so fair-weather. This is a great team that has been/is playing through a lot of adversity.

I still love 'em! And the Rays just won two out of three.

    GO SOX!!!!!!!

  1. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Get rid of Wakefield....please. He is not a MLB pitcher...he's a chucker who gets lucky once every ten or so starts. Enough already. Staked to a 2-0 lead in the first and what does he do....well you all know. Nice guy but his best days are long past. When you need a win he is the last pitcher I want to see take the mound. Pitful game. He better not be on the playoff roster. Timlin is another one...time to say thanks and show him the door too.

The birth is in Boston, not Florida and your family takes priority with this. Bay is a very valuable player to the Sox as the last 2 nights will attest. But you really need to get a life with a comment like that.

  1. I can't believe Francona keeps leaving Wakefield in when it's painfully obvious to everyone he doesn't have it most of the time. I guess Francona thinks the Sox can make up a 6-8 run deficit afte rthe first few innings. I certainly wouldn't let Wakefield start a playoff game. He's way too inconsistent. I thought Francona is supposed to be such a great Manager. I don't think so at all. He's been blessed with the best players. He should be able to tell immediately if Wakefield has it or not. I don't think the Sox have the best team this year. Their hitting ,with the exception of Dustin and Youk, is very questionable. They just don't have clutch hitters this year. I hope I'm wrong but I think this is the year of the Angels! They have the best pitching, defense and hitting!

  1. Getting rid of Manny was obviously the right thing to do. At the same time I have this question. Since Manny wanted to be a free agent next year, why did the Red Sox not consider the following: when whatever conversations went on about his contract in the first half went nowhere and Manny headed South in a way that no other employee in America could get away with, why did they not consider the following: OK Manny, we will give up the two option years because we do not want to see your face under a Red Sox hat again, IF you give us these kind of numbers in the second half? What did they have to lose? How is it that any worker can openly maliinger without ANY consequence? There is something terribly wrong with all of this. He helped us win two Series but who really misses him?
