This afternoon's heavy rain showers in the Boston area haven't yet caused the Red Sox to delay or postpone tonight's game against the Yankees, but they have already called off a main reason fans would want to be in attendance.

The ceremony for the retirement of Johnny Pesky’s No. 6, scheduled for this evening, has been moved to Sunday, Sept 28. It will take place at approximately 1:15 p.m. prior to the Sox-Yankees game at 1:35 p.m., according to a release from the Red Sox.

According to the Red Sox, their private weather service, Meteorlogix, calls for the possibility of a break in the rain during the late afternoon hours near Fenway Park, so they remain hopeful of playing the game.

The Fenway gates will open at the regularly scheduled time of 5:05 p.m., and the Red Sox still intend to start the game at 7:05, though they warn ticket holders that there is a chance the start of the game will be delayed.

Here is the National Weather Service forecast for this evening:

Tonight: Rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 10 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog. Low around 60. East wind between 10 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between one and two inches possible.

We'll post further updates on the status of the game and any forecast changes as soon as we have them.

  1. Say the game gets rained out tonight...will it ever be played????

  1. I've got tickets to tomorrow's game and am trying to figure out if we should drive all the way up from NYC. We don't want to come up if the game is not going to be played or postponed to Sunday. Any insight you may have about conditions tomorrow and likelihood of game being played would be much appreciated.

  1. Freakin 'Skanks should just forfiet the games. Just because Hank is an idiot, and nobody likes them anyways.

  1. Theoretically,
What happens to the weekend games if they are postponed due to weather? Asumming TB wins and games are no longer meaningful (except financially...) wha thappens to possible weekend games that get postponed?
    I have Tickets for Saturday

  1. Assuming these games against the Yankees will still matter in the race for the A.L East division, when would the games be played if the weekend was a "washout"? Would the Sox be forced into a doubleheader on a Monday and potentially a game on Tuesday, with the prospect of either opening the playoffs on either Wednesday or Thursday?

Presumably, if the Rays clinch the division and these games are postponed, then this just will not be played?

Either way, seems like the Sox could endure a long layoff before the playoffs or be forced into a very tight scenario with a lot of innings coming just days before the playoffs open.

    Thanks

  1. any idea what might happen as far as the schedule and make-up games if either today's and/or saturday's games are rained out?

    Posted by bullwinkle02 September 26, 08 10:51 AM
  1. well, the forecast doesn't call for anything better today.......why don't they just call it now, rather than make us all sit thru a rain delay, while they 'cha-ching' us to death w/ concession sales?

  1. This is stupid - EVERYBODY KNOWS that the Red Sox will open the doors, get suckers to buy their $9 beer and $5 water, then send them home an hour alater without a pitch being thrown. It's their greedy MO.

  1. Are all MLB teams required to finish out the schedule, despite the playoff picture?

If so, could the Sox be pushed into a possible Monday game because of rainouts? That would be a drag.

  1. So what's the weather word and game status?

  1. How unpleasant does it have to be for the Sox to give their fans a break. Call tonight's game now!

  1. This frikken blows... the last tropical storm that came through was a nothing...this one isn't even a tropical storm..and it is going to dump more rain and last two days?????
My tickets to Tonights and Tomorrows games... now wotth nothing to me for games played during the week. this is so dissapointing..and no one will push anything back, because it isn't about fans. IT is about tv and sales.

  1. Is there any news whether the Red Sox will play tonight? When will they make the decision?

Posted by alyson September 26, 08 02:34 PM
  1. Are they just going to cancel the game? I don't see how they can do that since we could still get the division, especially if the rays lose tonight, which they wont know by the time the game gets rained out. I'm hoping they reschedule it for Sunday night, because Saturday is supposed rain all day too.

Posted by Ramin September 26, 08 02:37 PM
  1. You know -- it is awful that there is no accountability about when they have to announce whether a game is cancelled. Everybdy doesn't live five minutes from the park and it takes a lot of time to get there.

sox have not updated their web site but why wait for them? how about some investigative reporting?

  1. If tonight's game is cancelled but they open the gates and I'm not sure, can I use the tickets at the rescheduled game on Sunday?

Posted by skippy September 26, 08 03:18 PM
  1. No way they play tonight; Saturday also looking doubtful, especially if they have to stick with the FOX starting time of 3:55. I anticipate there will be a Sunday doubleheader, and one of the games in the series canceled (unless Tampa has not clinched the division; then the'll have to play Monday).

Posted by WeatherNerd September 26, 08 03:19 PM
  1. What's the latest on tonight's game? Safe to assume that it will be rescheduled?

Posted by Amy September 26, 08 03:22 PM
  1. I have 2 tickets for tonight's game- do I have to make the trip from R.I., sit for an hour or two in the rain before a decision. I've got to believe that the Sox weather radar indicates heavy rain all night as does radar at the weather bureau. How about some consideration for the fans who travel from out-of-state.

  1. I have tickets but am not going to sit in the rain and watch them play "tarp on/tarp off". That whole process takes 45 minutes each time they do it.

According to the Red Sox, their private weather service, Meteorlogix, calls for the possibility of a break in the rain during the late afternoon hours near Fenway Park.

The Fenway gates will open at the regularly scheduled time of 5:05 p.m., and the Red Sox still intend to start the game at 7:05, though they warn ticket holders that there is a chance the start of the game will be delayed.

  1. Tickets are all bar coded computerized so if you go in, and need your ticket later it's all reset. Weather will be a no-go tonight and for all of Saturday - Sox wouldl try to play TWO on Sunday before the second storm (TS Kyle) makes a direct hit but latest track has that impacting Boston from 8AM to 8PM Sunday - Sox Play 2 Monday and (1 Tuesday if need for Division championship). My idea is that both teams should get out of Boston by 9PM head for Tampa, we'll be the Home team and it will be an instant cash sell-out

Are you kidding me? Their own service calls for a break near Fenway Park? Every other weather report says steady rain through tomorrow. What a bunch of money sucking greedy four letter words this ownership group is. Cancel the game on time for once!

  1. I agree with WeatherNerd. Tonight gets rained out and moved to Sunday night/late afternoon. Tomorrow gets rained out and never gets played unless of course we win both Sunday and Tampa has lost all 3 of their games.

    Posted by bpaz11 September 26, 08 03:43 PM
  1. Except under extreme circumstances, pro baseball games are never called before the scheduled start time. They want to make sure that the game gets in tonight if at all possible. Day/night doubleheaders are a nightmare for some fans/the teams/and employees. I've got the 90 minute drive from NH tonight, so I know what a pain in the neck this is.

Posted by LovetheSox September 26, 08 03:45 PM
  1. Fan friendly Sox execs... what a joke. This game should obviously be canceled, but they just want to get a few hours of concession stand $$$ to line their pockets. They force fans to pay money to travel in to town, hire babysitters, buy crappy overpriced food at Fenway because of the thought the Sox might play. Selfish, greedy behavior by John Henry, Larry Lucchino, and Tom Werner.

Posted by Brian September 26, 08 03:46 PM
  1. I dont think they will cancel any of these games, because of the revenue MLB takes in from the Red Sox. I think 2 will get played on Sunday, and 1 game either tonight or Saturday. Remember the umpires can also call the game after a certain amount of innings.

    Posted by SOXFAN810 September 26, 08 03:47 PM
  1. Say if I use the tickets tonight and spend $100 on suds and sauseege and the game is called off, will I be able to get a voucher for $100 for the money I spent on food and be able to come back on Sunday, say that tonight's game is made up on Sunday? Also will I get a voucher for the $25 I spend on parking along with the gas I used.

Oh, I and I bet you all the $$$ I spend tonight that the game is going to be called off.

  1. Poor PR for the ballclub not to make a statement or postpone early, it's obvious this one won't be able to be played. They acknowledged that Johnny Pesky's day will be moved to Sunday, but what about the fans driving in to town for the game. Anything for another sawbuck - gee ACE ticket spends 3 million in advertising, and just so happens to have all these tickets from the RedSox selling for huge $$. That is the same as the club scalping (pimping) their own tickets. The true fans get screwed all the time, they should be thanking them...

  1. The Red Sox organization should consider that fans are coming from all over New Englad to Fenway. If the weather is as bad as it is today, I don't think they should keep people hanging as to whether or not the game will be played. Show some consideraton for the fans--without us, there would be no profit$$$$!!!!

  1. Any updates? Has the game been called? I have tickets to the game tonight and I came into work early so I could leave early to make it on time... earlier this month this same situation happened and they played anyways even though it was raining. I just don't want to go there and sit in the rain. My buddy who works at Scampo (nice restaurant at the Liberty Hotel in Boston) says the red sox brass has already reserved their tables there tonight so he was certain it would be canceled but now it looks like the rain is slowing... Anyone with any Idea?

I only live a mere 3 miles from Fenway, I have tickets for tonight and even I don't want to make the trek in this pouring rain, I can't imagine those of you from NH, CT, ME, VT, NY, wherever, trying to drive through this mess. Just postpone NOW and save everyone the hassle. You're in the playoffs, there'll be more home games to reap those $$.

  1. Let's put them all on a plane and send them to Milweake.

Better yet let's get everyone on a freight train to Montreal and play at EXPO Stadium.
    Terry would feel at home.
The Red Sox could make $50 per person for the train. Sell $100. worth of beer, and also sell everyone a "I went to Montreal to see the Red Sox" TEE SHIRT for $15.
The train would leave 1 hour after the game to return and pick up the next group.
This would be a great weekend. Can you find your passport???????

    Drive to Boston: $25 gas

    Torrential downpours: free
Tarp not coming off the field tonight or we manage
2 innings before getting rained out: INFURIATING!

  1. Here is my opinion...

Tonight's game will be rained out (make-up will be Sunday)

The rain is supposed to stop tomorrow afternoon. The game is scheduled to start tomorrow at 3:55pm....I think this game WILL be played even if it starts late.

Sunday, they will play the scheduled 1:35pm game...then again at 6pm (Friday's make-up).

With the Angels most likely electing Wednesday as Game 1 (yes, its their choice), there is NO WAY the Sox/Yanks will play Monday.

If they can't fit the games in the way I described above, then one of them (tonight's) most likely will NOT be made up.

Posted by Drewski September 26, 08 05:16 PM
  1. OFFICIAL: as of 520pm the game is on.

dont ask me why, a double header sunday would be ok

  1. The website for the Red Sox’s “private weather service,” Meteorlogix, states that the company helps professional sports organizations “better manage operations” and “increase customer satisfaction and receive fewer complaints due to poor weather planning.” If that's the case, the fans aren't the only ones who should be asking for a refund for tonight.

Posted by WeatherNerd September 26, 08 05:32 PM
  1. The "dry spot" will last just long enough for the grounds crew to take off the tarp, line the field, then put the tarp back on when it starts to pour again.

  1. FYI, there will not be a tie-breaker game for the division championship...the Rays already have clinched the tiebreaker by winning the season series. If the Sox sweep and the Rays get swept, the Sox win the division outright. I don't know where all this talk about a game on Tuesday is coming from.

Posted by Steve September 26, 08 05:50 PM
  1. Drewski is right, this game will not be played and those making the long trip (and bitching about it) are suckers. Hopefully this game will be the one not played and I can get a refund and rest up for the playoffs.

If you pay $50 for parking you are a sucker. There are many cheaper options to be found.

That being said, the Sox should have called this one at 4pm.

  1. Displaced native New Englander here; I understand the frustration of fans having to calculate whether to go out the the ballpark or not, but let's remember that the big picture here is setting up for the playoffs. For the Yankees, these are meaningless games before a nice long winter vacation :-) :-) :-) :-), but for the Sox they matter, both the potential to get the division and the issues with either too long of a layoff (weekend cancelled) or too short (play Mon/Tue).

Given the uncertainty of tomorrow and Sunday's weather (and beyond), they really have to try to get the game in if at all possible. If not for the playoffs (again, for the Sox, not the Yanks :-) I'd say do what makes sense for the fans, but at this point in this season, it's gotta be about chasing that WS...
