Alicea not returning
The Red Sox are bringing five of their six coaches back for 2009. First base/infielders coach Luis Alicea was the lone man not offered a 2009 contract, the team announced in a release.
Alicea, a former Red Sox second baseman, had been on manager Terry Francona's staff for the past two seasons.
DeMarlo Hale (third base/outfielders), Dave Magadan (hitting), John Farrell (pitching), Brad Mills (bench), and Gary Tuck (bullpen) have all been invited to return.

Hey, Tek, you wanna be a coach?
I am not sure if Dave Magadan is doing good job after having seen very, very frustrating scene of base runners stranded. We need a better hitting coach.
Why has Aliciea not been invited back?
John Farrell, thank you for your professionalism, your loyalty and your abilities. Whatever managerial or front office job you take this time around, we'll always be in your debt. And coming back this year to fulfill your commitment to Francona when you could have taken the money elsewhere, speaks volumes about you as a man. Thanks again!
PLEASE, IF THERE WAS DUMPING OF COACHES THEN DAVE MAGADAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST TO GO. DID LITTLE TO HELP ELLSBURY, TEK, OR COCO WHEN HE NEEDED IT MOST. SAW LITTLE HELP FROM HIM. GET SOME FRESH BLOOD AND SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS HOW TO HIT.
I could see that happening after watching Tito telling him what to do each and every time they were on the field. He looked like the dugout chihuahua at times.
how about kevin millar?
BRING BACK PAPA JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could this be the place for Alex Cora?
This doesn't make any sense. All I heard about him is how well he worked with the infielders (specifically the 2B and SS) on their defense and last I looked, both Pedroia and Lowrie played good defense this year.
Two words. Johnny Pesky.
It is plainly obvious that Magadan has not helped those hitting from the left side of the plate. In various articles, Ellsbury and Tek both mentioned foot tapping issues that messed up their timing.
I think if the Sox brought back Papa Jack and he only helped Papi, who has declined since Papa Jack has left (injured or not), and left the other hitters alone, it would be an improvement over what Magadan has accomplished. Not one hitter has improved under the tutelage of Magadan. If one looks at Magadan's track record, we can look to the vaunted San Diego Padre offensive juggernaut.
I know Tito mentions how hard Magadan works and that's great. However, it doesn't make a difference if he works hard and doesn't help anyone.
For Papi's sake, bring back Papa Jack!

I agree with the Alex Cora comment. He would be a great fit.
Another two words - Wendell Kim.
Bring the home, baby!

Don't tell Ken Rosenthal that the Sox canned one of their minority coaches.
Can't blame Magadan for the Red Sox lack of hitting. If you can't hit when you get to the show you shouldn't be there. Tek is what he is. No hitting coach is going to bring Tek back to where he once was.
Millar.
The guy is just fun to have around. I miss him. And I'm not alone- judging by the Stand O he gets every single time he comes back.
He's worth having around just for the lift his attitude brings. Nobody cheers up a team when it's down like Millar does. A clever and witty fellow to be sure. After a painful loss when nobody wants to talk to the media, you need a Millar to go out there, smile, and say something goofy to smooth over the bumps.
Not one hitter has improved under Madagan? How about Dustin Pedroia? Or Youkilis? Or Drew? Or Lowell (last year at least, since he was injured on and off all season). I think you need to do your homework.
I've often heard that hitting coaches don't do much. By the time guys make it to the big leagues, they've been coached on their swing for 15 years. They know the mechanics on their own. I tend to agree with that philosophy.
Papi's lack of hitting in the playoffs had nothing to do with Magadan. Nor did Lowrie's troubles, and certainly not Varitek's decline.
Pitching coaches, on the other hand, are hugely important. I'd hate to lose Farrell, as by all accounts he's one of the best in the biz. However, I would imagine he'll be a hot property (although I thought pitching coaches made bad managers???)
so they are not offering a job o the Spanish guy..................hmm
Millar? As a first-base coach?
Are you serious?
here we go again. Boston doing stupid and crazy moves that make no sense. Are there just getting an all white team? Probably, lets see if they win without latin players. Another 86 years!!
They let Alicea go? He would be one of the LAST coaches that should go. The work he has done with the younger players and his own baseball experience should be enough to keep him. He has the respect of the Latino players (and maybe that is the problem Tito??) Wouldn't it be great to hear the players' perspective? Maybe good - old-Tito better brush up on his spanish...because he is going to need it...What is this about DALE S. Coming back? YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?? What a laugh. Tito made some stupid decisions during the Tampa series...and he started the off-season with another. Yeah, it could be a 'spanish' thing...
I think they go in house with the in field coordinator from the minors. I cant find his name. He oversaw the development of Pedroia and Lowrie.
