Dodger dogs

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff October 16, 2008 10:30 AM

So much for the hopes of a Red Sox-Manny Ramirez showdown in the World Series.

The Red Sox' situation -- trailing the remarkable Rays, 3-1, heading into tonight's Game 5 -- is dire enough, but at least there's still a small chance they can hold up their end of the bargain.

Manny and the Dodgers don't even have that slim hope anymore -- they were eliminated in the NLCS last night by the Philadelphia Phillies, who secured their first World Series berth since 1993 with a 5-1 victory to take the series in five games.

And with the season suddenly complete, those in LA are already wondering if Manny, who becomes a free agent this offseason and wants a lucrative long-term contract at age 36, will even be a Dodger when the next season begins.

T.J. Simers -- the usually cynical LA Times columnist who has emerged as Manny's head cheerleader in the local media -- writes this morning that there is no doubt what the Dodgers should do:

[Ramirez] not only puts the Dodgers in the playoffs, stretching the season out an additional eight games and making millions for the Parking Lot Attendant [owner Frank McCourt] in souvenir sales and additional ticket sales, but he single-handedly makes the Dodgers relevant again.

He plays 61 games in Dodger blue, hitting .410 with 21 home runs and driving in 63 runs, and there's actually some folks in the media debating whether to bring the showman back?

Of course, it won't be so simple. Simers suspects McCourt will position the Dodgers to finish second in the bidding, and as Manny says in his own inimitable way, he's not ready to make any commitments or decisions anyway.

I just want to go home [to Florida] and spend some time with my family," Ramirez says, while adding with a grin, "I want to see who is the highest bidder. Gas is up and so am I."

Another Times columnist, Bill Plaschke, has a more clear-eyed look at the Ramirez situation, suggesting that hitting the jackpot in free agency is more important to the slugger than his newfound affection for LA:

I asked Ramirez [after the game] whether he wanted to be here.

"We'll see," he said.

We'll see? We'll see????

This is a guy who spent the last two months romancing the media and fans as if he wanted to be here forever, and suddenly he's not sure?

Of course not. The last two months were a show. Given his history, he will never again be that focused on the field, or as affable in the clubhouse.

Now, understandably, it's all about the money, Ramirez wanting to cash in on the performance of a lifetime.

Gotta believe Plaschke has bingo there.

Two other links on this morning's episode of MannyWatch:

  • ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure Jr. has Ramirez referring to himself as "a five-tool player. That's me now." Feel free to supply your own punchline.

  • CNNSI's Jon Heyman speculates that Manny could be seeking a six-year deal for as much as $25 million per season.

    Pay it, Hank. Pay it.

    1. Please, please stop writing about this piece of garbage human being. "Gas is up and so am I" - what an obnoxious thing to say given the state of the rest of us in this economy. Who gives a damn about where he goes. As for TJ Simers, check his bank account as he has to be on the Manny brigade payroll. His journalism professors must be really proud of his ethics.

    1. You knew the Manny-LA Honeymoon wasn't going to last. I think everyone outside of LA saw that coming!

Had the Dodgers gone all the way there would likely have been more pressure put on McCourt to keep Manny in LA.

Now it's going to be just like old times except 3,000 miles away with a different ball club. Manny's going to say that the "Dodgers don't respect him" and of course "it's where he feels wanted". This should be fun to watch since it's now the Dodgers problem, not the Red Sox.

Like I've always said, Manny should be grateful that he has such a God given talent because he couldn't flip burgers at Mcdonald's if his life depended upon it!

    1. This article is ridiculous. Manny has no idea what McCourt will do but most of the press think he will INTENTIONALLY bid second for Manny and use that as an excuse to not resign him. And you can wonder why Manny isn't gushing about wanting to stay in LA? Manny is no more in it "for the money" than ANYBODY else. And I do mean anybody else. Don't most people, regardless of the profession, choose to work where they can make the best money? Just because his best money is way more than the average person does not mean that he shouldn't go for it. Stupid, stupid article.

    1. I'm guessing Manny won't be having any economy discussions in the offseason with his family. Gas is down, and so is oil to its lowest point in a year.

    1. Not everyone works for the most money. They work for the best situation for their family, with money being a small part of it. The funny thing is there are plenty of people like Manny that are just working for the money and have no real pride in their work, unless it benefits their pocket. He should be ashamed of his behaviour, but he doesn't even understand that. That's the pitty, he doesn't really comprehend what he has done.

    1. Manny will become a Texas Ranger. There's no way a National League team can sign this DH-ready to happen. The Yankees are already looking at a DH platoon of Damon, Posada, and Matsui. He won't go back to Boston or Cleveland. The Angels should sign Teixeira instead and are already old. I don't see him in Chicago (Thome still produces) or Baltimore.

    1. Unless HaNkY vetoes Brian Cashman and.or Theo & Co. goes crazy, who will $cott Bora$ get to bid on his client in the amount that Moonbeam thinks he deserves (typing that makes me laugh and sick at the same time)? Mets? Cubs? Angels? It will be interesting to observe. Here's hoping he truly gets what he deserves.

    1. The minute that Manny the Moron gets his new millions, he will become cancer in the locker room. There is no doubt about it....Like the story of the Frog and the Scorpion, one can never change their basic character.....He talks about his love for LA, but now his true colors show.....I want to see this POS in NYC, b/c he can't handle publicity, and in that city, that is all it will be....He will implode and take whichever team he is with down with him.....If the Dodgers are serious about some hitting, they should go for Texeira, who is a class guy on and off the field....

    1. Manny Ramirez is a wonderful player and he is fun and funny to watch. He has provided a lot of joy to our family here in Las Vegas. We enjoy watching him play and we enjoy listening to Vince Sculley on the radio.
In his own way, Manny puts forward a remarkable, humanist critique of alienation in
our society. He is a human and not a thing.
We wish him well and we are pulling for Big Papi tonight.

    1. Money oh I mean Manny is the biggest jerk I've ever seen. If my kids used him as a role model when they played little league I would have pulled them off the team. Actually no,the coach would have benched them for not trying. He's making the game into a circus and he belongs in the clown tent. Thank God we got rid of him when we did. It should have happened sooner as his welcome was worn out long before he swung at Youk and pushed Jack. Whoever signs him will be very, very sorry when his hammy begins to bother him. He wants the money to be on the beach.

    1. I hope he ends up in NY. That would be pure comedy. His major complaint about Boston is that it's like playing in a fish bowl. NY is an even bigger fish bowl (though maybe slightly less hung up on the Yanks). The fact is that the only cities where you can command top dollar are the cities with passionate fans, which Manny claims he doesn't want. It's an enigma - but I'm sure BorA$$ will talk him into going to whoever gives him the most money.

Poor Manny. He could have been loved here forever, but instead he had to alienate all Sox fans with a brain (plenty of nitwit Manny-rumpswabs left, admittedly). Hope the money was worth it you dope.

    1. "He is a human and not a thing."

      Amen to that.

He is also a fierce competitor and usually on the winning team. For those who want to "eliminate" Manny please hire the correct "once every five days" workers/players they call picthers.

Don't the top pitchers make about $15-$20 million per year just like Manny? Can they shut Manny up?

    1. Someone will get Svengalied by Borass and Manny will get far more than he deserves in both years and dollars. Anyone blind enough to think that he will not regress to the norm of his past behavior once he gets a new contract deserves exactly what they get. Even Hank Steinbrenner isn't silly enough to go there. If he is, count the Yanks out for a long time. It is hard to project where he may end up. He is a huge liability on an NL team given his age and defensive "tools". He is too expensive to just be a DH in the AL. Let's see how Scott spins this.

    1. I think the Red Sox should go after Manny to come back next year. Hear me out.

If he fires Scott Boras, saying that he got bad advice from Boras and he loved Boston, playing in the same line-up as Big Papi, Youk, Pedro, etc, and that he can't win a championship without them and vice versa, he saves face. Contrite and polite.

The Sox can offer him a three year deal , two years @ $45 mill and an option for whatever they agree to, . Bring him back. Poor Dan Shaughnessy won't know what to do with himself without Manny to kick around.

    1. Just goes to show, Manny is a person, who says anything to ingratiate himself, and really has no feeling for the people or places he's talking about.
The ONLY thing Manny loves is money.
I pity the team who signs him, and finds out they've got someone who only plays when he feels the muse, and could care less about teammates or his team.
Come to think of it, whoever signs him gets exactly what they deserve.

    1. It's amamzing! Just about a week and half ago Bill Plaschke was just gushing about Manny and chiding the Red Sox about how foolish they were to let him go! Now look at what he's writing! Wait a minute! He'd make a great addition to the Boston Globe right alongside Dan Shaughnessy!!!!!

    1. Manny will end up with the Yankees. No doubt about it. Manny is a narcissist he will do anything to be "the man" and now that he is free to sign...the Yankees give him the money, the attention, the media, and the madness that he loves.

    1. My name is Carlos Sanchez and I am stupid. I think Manny is going to resign with the dodgers for one year!

    1. "Manny puts forward a remarkable, humanist critique of alienation in
our society. He is a human and not a thing." Are you kidding. He got paid $160 Million by the Red Sox over 71/2 years and was warmly received for most of those years. He quit on the team this year (not to mention the last part of the 2005 season). His conduct was dishonorable by any standards. He was never treated like a "thing". By all accounts he was treated exceptionally well by Red Sox Management and he repaid them by his antics to void the last two years of club options. Whoever signs him will enter into a Faustian relationship. Don't say you weren't forewarned

    1. Look, Manny's games with us in Boston were bad, after 8 years of support, but why anyone in LA expects him to be loyal to the city is beyond me. People are typically loyal to their family and maybe their hometown. LA is the site of neither for Manny. Arguably, even after 8 years, Boston wasn't either. Baseball fans assume too much of a geographic connection between players and teams, simply because that's how the fans feel. Fact is, Manny's sorta from NY and the DR, his family is in Florida, and nobody else is going to get his loyalty unless they buy it. Ask yourself, if you were shipped to Omaha to work, wouldn't you immediately start looking for your own highest bidder?

    1. I'm kind of hoping the Yankees sign him. It would be fun watching the Steinbuffoons have fits when he laughs at them when they tell him to cut his hair, show up on time, put forth his best effort, and play when he's told to after they've already signed a Boras negotiated contract. Nothing could make me happier than watching him help perpetuate the current joke that is the Yankees by adding his cancerous presence to the strict way they attempt to run their organization.

    1. What manny gets will depend upon who gets Sabathia, Lowe, and Teixera - all of whom are seen to be higher priorities (as far as I understand) than Manny.

I can't imagine anyone giving him 4 years and I suspect it'll be 3 - unless some team gets desperate. I don't think Cashman will let the Yanks risk it. They'll want someone younger.
Seawall might be onto something - I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up In texas. There, Toronto, or LAA if they lose out on CC and Tex.

    1. You all make me sick. Manny has done things that no one has ever done. He is one of the best players in the game!! Stop being mad at somebody you do not even know!!! I love Manny and the Red Sox!! get over it!!

    1. No organization that respects itself will sign him, period. But that leaves plenty of clubs that will sign him.
Like with Bonds, it will be only a dog and pony show, all spectacle and no substance.
If there were an actual commisioner, Ramirez would be banned from baseball for a year for quitting on his team.

    1. Is Manny or any Athelete really deserving of this income or attention. I'm Lifetime Red Sox, New England Sports Fan. With the economic issues World Wide its nice to know what his priorities are. You get what you pay for, but with Manny, long term is it worth it? Me, Me, Me, Mine, Mine, Mine.

Its time America to rethink your priorities, Education, Healthcare, Energy Technology, to name a few.

So enough with all the "he doesn't deserve...blah blah blah" Let the man get paid. Don't hate on him because you can't do anything good enough to get real money. Blame yourself for voting for Bush and hoping McCain gets in. He didn't make the rules, he's just working them.

    1. Manny is no different than a rock and roll star or movie star. No one boos Bruce Willis for making 30 million on a single picture. If Russell Crowe chooses to make an ass of himself in a hotel, he isn't thrown under the bus by movie fans. Manny plays baseball and is seen in person up to 200 times a year including pre-season, post-season. You think Crowe or Willis could take the abuse this guy gets? It's all fun with The Who or Madonna as they rake in millions and millions of dollars, but if they have a bad concert or off key, does anyone care? My point is that Manny has every right to want more money than anyone else cares for him to see/want/
