Dubee says Sox pitchers made mistakes
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Phillies pitching coach and former Bridgewater-Raynham High School pitching great Rich Dubee said after studying video of the Red Sox-Rays' seven-game series that Red Sox pitchers made mistakes during the course of the series.
"I think if we pitch to our capabilities, we'll be fine," Dubee said of his own staff. "We have to get ahead in the count. Our guys can change speeds, which is something I don't think Boston did a whole lot of. A lot of those home runs were balls that were up in the middle of the plate. They made a lot of mistakes. Good hitters hit mistakes, and that's what the Rays did. Hopefully we'll avoid getting in the middle of the plate, and we'll get ahead in the count, and hopefully be able to change speeds and throw a number of pitches for strikes."

Paging Captain Obvious
wow, that's some earth shattering analysis there -
My GOD, Dubee is a genius. The Red Sox pitchers made mistakes. Damn give that man a raise. I thought Beckett, Dice K, Lester and Wakefield wanted to give up those runs to the Rays on purpose. Thanks to Rich Dubee for setting me and hopefully everyone else straight.
Wow, this guy's a frigging genius. Seriously? Is this worthy of print (I get it, Blog?)
The Red Sox pitchers made mistakes? Well, that Philly rotation doesn;t need to make mistakes for the Rays to pounce on them, because their best stuff (except for Hamels) are categorically "mistakes" Good luck with that....Dubee.
I think Dubee has been smokin some doobies. Yes, the Sox made some mistakes, but the Phillies pitchers are likely to make more. I don't think many baseball experts give the Phils much of a chance against the Rays. All the Rays do is hit, field, pitch and run better than the Phils in a tougher league and division.
Good luck Mr Doobie,er I mean Mr Dubee
Wow this guy a genius! That's usually what happens when pitchers make mistakes, isn't it?
Hopefully we'll avoid getting in the middle of the plate, and we'll get ahead in the count, and hopefully be able to change speeds and throw a number of pitches for strikes.
What a dip-wad!
Of course, Nick thought this was newsworthy. No wonder the Sunday Notes column hasn't been worth reading in years.
Rays in 4.
And of course, coming from a coach whose pitcher may every once in awhile go into maybe the seventh inning, but more often just go the first four or five because they can't afford the out in the batting line up. So, duh, how many innings do any of the Phillies pitchers have under their belt at this time compared to the over 200 over most of our pitchers.
Dubee's connection to New England notwithstanding, I don't know what's worse. . . Dubee for pointing out the obvious, Nick Cafardo for writing it, or boston.com for running it. Must be a slow day, haha.
Rays in 4 unless Jamie Moyer throws a perfect game....Not
Hey sox fans, if the Rays win the WS guess who gets to watch the Ring Ceremony at their home opener next year? THE YANKEES...lmfao
I wonder what his analysis of John Wasdin would've been back in the day....
All the news that's fit to print! Wow, provocative insight from the Globe!
This guy is a potential Darwin Award winner.
thanks, are we suppose to take this as a slight to sox pitchers. duh, we know they made mistakes.
Thanks Captain Obvious. This isn't even blog worthy news.
Not news. Thanks for sharing, though, Nick...
Why did I hear Forrest Gump's voice while being wowed by this groundbreaking, insider analysis?
No sh*t Dick Tracy! Balls left up in the strike zone to major league hitters usually wind up on someones fireplace. The Rays will smoke the Phillys and their lousy pitching. Watch!
"Hopefully we can win one game!"
The World Series was over Sunday night!
. . because the Sox's game plan all along was to throw it in the wheelhouse of all the Rays' players just to see how far they could hit it . . . . . of course that was only after the Sox made it a point to fall behind in the count and throw it over the middle of the plate. . . . .
What an a$$. Spoken like a true Philadelphia sports fan - arrogant and naive. Hey Dubee, give us some analysis on Mitch Williams's pitching to Joe Carter in 1993. Was that a mistake pitch you think? Moron.
Moron.
No wonder the AL is so much better than the NL. You actually have morons like Dew-Bee drawing a paycheck telling NL players what to do. You're a cretin Dew-Bee and your pitching staff will get lit up in the WS.
Rich Dubee is a total utter brainless stupid moronic cretin
It seemed to me that Tampa did not miss one mistake we threw all series.
Jamie Moyer in game 3 could get ugly.
None of his business.
He made one point worth noting actually..."Our guys can change speeds, which is something I don't think Boston did a whole lot of." The Phillies also may want to consider taking starters out who are getting pounded repeatedly.
Wow. To think we could have Dubee instead of Farrell?!
The team that scores more points will end up winning.
The team that wins it's division has a great chance of making the playoffs.
Rays will sweep the fillies.
Watch the Rays cream those guys.
This has to be one of the funniest things that I have read in a long while. Anyone who knows anything about baseball could see that those pitches were mistakes. As Rob said, he must be trying for the captain obvious award.
My favorite part was that they made mistakes by not changing speeds. Well, duh, they were behind in counts. Only Dice-K throws breaking balls behind in the count. Everyone else throws fastballs over the plate and they ended up over the monster.
What is next? Their hitting coach saying that Boston didn't score enough runs by not hitting enough?
Dubee was probably just throwing away a quote. The dip-wad is anyone who thought this was worth posting as newsworthy.
Wait, I'm confused -- balls that are up and over the middle of the plate are good or bad?
Can you go over that again, coach?
Well, pitchers miss location, but the criticism of not changing speeds effectively is a criticism of Varitek. Another reason not to resign Captain Intangibles II.
I'm sure many front office personnel, managers, and coaches would love to say that Terry Francona made a lot of mistakes, but that goes against the MLB code, so instead this guy has little choice but to say that the Sox pitchers made mistakes with location.
maybe the Sox should give this guy a call for pitching advice....my guess is that both the Rays and Sox had pitchers who made mistakes...let's see how the Phillies' pitchers do....Worry about your own team...stupid article...
I never read where any poster said here that the Sox needed to throw more changeups. So don't act like you already knew that.
With insight like that, I wouldn't be surprised if he leads a team all the way to Willliamsport next year!
Why does the American League dominate the nationl League to no point?
Discuss amoungst yourselves!
There ya go...the pitching gospel as spoken by Bridgewater Raynam High School's finest!...gimme a friggin' break! I can hear him now handing the Phillies pitching staff similar pre -series "pearls" like:
"Try to not let them hit it" BUT "throwing strikes is a good thing" SO "try pitching down in the strike zone" WHILE "pounding the strike zone" AND TRY TO 'breath through your eyes"AND LASTLY "don't think, just throw"!
Yes, Dubee states the obvious. But, he is also right.
The Rays are not the power slugging team our pitchers made them out to be! Their slugging during the ALCS was record-setting. Our pitchers (and the venerable game-caller, Jason Varitek) have to accept some of the blame!
Duhhhhhhh!!!!
I think his point wasnt to be that obvious...he's just saying that they made the rays hitting look better that it actually is.
Stop being know it all fans for once.
Brilliant!
Brilliant. Thanks for breaking it down.
Detecting LARGE quantities of Red Sox Nation butthurt in this sector...
Sounds like a lot of bitterness here over some patently obvious observations. I imagine it only gets worse watching the Phils' pitching keep things well in check (cf. game one). Much sympathy... :)
