Lowell has surgery

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff October 20, 2008 03:34 PM

As expected, Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell had surgery this morning to repair the hip injury that ended his season in the first round of the postseason.

Lowell had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right hip, and he also had a bone spur removed, according to Red Sox spokesman John Blake.

Lowell, the 2007 World Series MVP, was limited to one at-bat in the final 11 games of the regular season, and, clearly ailing, he went 0 for 8 in two American League Division Series games before he was removed from the roster in favor of infielder Gil Velazquez.

Blake said Lowell wanted to have the surgery now to have sufficient time to recover before the start of spring training.

  1. Torn tendon? The labrum is a collar of cartilage around a ball-and-socket joint. Are you saying he didn't have a labrum tear?

  1. Does anyone know of any baseball players that have had similar surgeries in the past?

I am wondering historically how players have recovered from this surgery?

Knowing if they can count on a healthy productive Mike Lowell next is a big question for the Sox.

  1. I'm not saying the Red Sox would have won the ALCS if Mike Lowell had been 100%, but I can't help but wonder.

The untold story of the series: Mark Kotsay, 0 RBI, 19 LOB. Boy was I tired of hearing that Kotsay had bad luck with long outs and at-em balls. A healthy Lowell would have dropped in some hits and maybe hit one or two of those long outs off/over a fence instead. Plus, Kotsay struck out in the 9th and 11th of Game 2, and the 9th of Game 7. I was rooting for him to draw a walk in the 7th and 9th last night because I knew he'd never get a hit. His one big hit in Game 5 could be attributed to a shallow-playing CF.

I had to rant somewhere. Point is we missed Lowell. Here's hoping he's fine for next year.

  1. torn tendon? not the labrum? bone spur removed - an impigment problem?

  1. I miscounted. It's 20 LOB in the ALCS for the guy who had a no-trade clause that specifically listed Boston in the first place (Seriously, what's the deal with that? Brian Giles, too.), not 19. Of course.

  1. Get well soon Mikey. Here's to hoping you're still here when spring training rolls around. We missed ya this postseason and it was obvious. Thank you for playing with so much heart hurt for most of the season.

  1. He'll always be a Florida Marlin to me.

  1. Kotsay wasn't great -- far from it -- but he did hit a lot of balls hard, but right at people. He smoked a line drive that Teixeira made a great play on, right before Lowrie hit the 43-hopper that sneaked through the infield. That's how it goes, sometimes. Kotsay hits it better, Lowrie gets the glory.
A healthy Lowell would probably have been better than Kotsay, but to ignore some of Kotsay's outs ("I'm tired of heqaring about them . . .") is pretty weak. All a hitter can do is hit it hard. Sometimes its at someone; sometimes it isn't.

  1. Get well Mike Lowell... your the reason I have started watching the Red Sox. Just since these past 2 seasons I can tell a change in the way things go when you play and when you don't. Point is you are always the MVP in my book. Get well soon!
    You were very missed.
