Lowell to have surgery Monday

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff October 14, 2008 04:57 PM

Third baseman Mike Lowell will have surgery on his damaged right hip Monday, which obviously ends his season, manager Terry Francona said. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Bryan Kelly.

More from Francona on this, the lineup, boos for Jason Varitek, and a few other topics to come.

  1. You can only admire this man for his courage to play and deal with the pain for as long as he did. Amazing that he played as well as he did but you know it takes alott of guts to grind out the way he did always team first. Can't wait to see him next year in the batters box feeling 100%.
Best wishes and good luck Monday !

  1. I know Varitek has been terrible this year and I am not one who thinks heis game calling makes up for his lack of production, but Jason has been a great player for the Red Sox during his career and should never, ever be booed, under any circumstance. Fans are the 10th player and I can't imagine booing your own team.

  1. Mikey, thank you for trying your best, while you were in such pain. You are truly one of a kind. We miss you, but will look forward to seeing you next year, healthy and ready to have another great year like you did in 2007. You will always be the MVP of this team, because of you spirit, determination, and leadership. Good luck on Monday, and hopes of a quick recovery. At least, finally your pain will be gone, and we can once again see that smiling face, and your great glove in the field, and your great hits. Take care Mikey, can't wait to see you next year.

Today is my birthday, and I wasn't expecting to hear this news today, but it is definitely in your best interest to hae the surgery done now, so you can get back in time for spring training. You are my fave player, and it has been so hard seeing you in such pain. Can't wait to see you back to full strength next year. Sox Nation sends you love and prayers.

  1. Here's hoping Mike comes back stronger than ever in 2009!!

And here's to JHarrin's post which should be the guideline for all of us when it comes to Varitek and others who are more than aware that they haven't been performing as expected but have been absolutely essential to Red Sox baseball over a number of years before. He has earned our respect and hopefully our expectations for next year! He's never tanked on the team, never been thought to be earning more than he's worth, never made an excuse for poor play or ailing body. We need to cheer the man tonight!!

  1. Mike Lowell is one of the class acts in Boston. Good luck with the surgery and look forward to seeing you next year. Teck has been the backbone of this club and this should not be forgotten. He orchestrates (sp?) the calling of the game and THAT should not be forgotten.

  1. I agree 100%. I was ashamed to call myself a fellow Sox fan when I heard that. Wake up people, Tek and the team have done much for all of us. He and they deserve our respect and forgiveness. Boo if they don't try or care. Not for popping out.

  1. The Red Sox are going to have to make a tough decision about Varitek in the near future, and when push comes to shove, level heads will prevail over sentiment in the front office. In the meantime, you don't boo the captain of a team that has won you two championships while the team is fighting to win a third. What's the matter with people?

  1. A ll the pundits are out in full force . It's called covering your back side.
If the Sox lose they are covered .
The Red Sox win tonight , we have Dice k for game 5.
up 3 games to 2 .I like our chances .
There isnt 1 person that can tell me they expected the Sox to beat the Yankees 4 straight,, much less the world series in 4 straight.
Yes i know this team isnt the same , nor was 2007 the same , this is 2008 !!!
Where there is a will , theres a way , come on Boston ..Get behind them .

  1. Varitek deserves all the boo's he has been receiving. He is the third highest paid catcher in baseball and put up .220/.313/.359 during a contract year! I think he has been spending too much time with Heidi Watney. Guys like Brian McCann and Russell Martin make less than a million a year. Thats less than 1/10 of what Varitek makes. I agree that he makes his pitchers better, but to what degree. What pitch is being called isn't even coming from him. It is coming from the bench the majority of the time. I hope the Sox make the right decision in the offseason and don't even bother dealing with Boras and Tek. That "C" belongs on the chest of Mike Lowell.

  1. If anyone should be booed it's Ortiz. Big Mouthi had to share his keen observations about the Tampa Bay players in Game 1, as if that wouldn't be plastered all over their clubhouse the next day as motivation. Good job. TB no longer has that clueless look, unlike Ortiz at the plate these days. Hey, Big Mouthi! Think you could manage to hit a ground ball between second and third one of these centuries or is an automatic out to right all we're gonna get?

  1. I feel bad for Lowell and have very good reason. I had/still have the same exact problem with my left hip. I played soccer from the age of 4 on. My senior year in high school i found out i crushed a portion of my left hip damaging the labrum as well as femoral head. The bone simply died and crushed. I had it surgicly dislocated and cleaned up but the damage left a mishaped hip. Over the next 2.5 years my body slowly crunched and munched my larbum to pieces and tearing it. I understand the pain he is in because I have been laid up from the pain and swelling for hours at a time. In 3 ish years i have had my hip re-done 2x and had screws removed this june. It sucks not being able to do the things you enjoy in life and i am glad hes making the right decidion to have it fixed before doing more damage. I actually had surgery in boston down the block from fenway and had the pleasure to watch a sox game with every visit for my leg. I was there the night lester pitched a no hitter and that was the night before my screws came out. I am feeling better but the damage has been done and im awating a hip replacement. the good news is every time i go to boston i get to see the sox play.

  1. I was at the game last night, sitting down close. I didn't hear any boos for anyone on our team. None.

Just because a reporter said he heard some boos, don't go assuming it's so.

  1. heyduke- I dont know where you were sitting by i was in section 18 right near the RED SOX dugout and there was nothing but boos for Varitek (any many red sox). The reporter was right on!

  1. Mike Lowell is a GAMER. Get well soon.

It takes 7 games to win a 7 game series sometimes! DON'T GIVE UP SOX FANS!!!!!

  1. Good luck Mike, get well soon. You're the best "throw-in" player we've ever had.

One thing though, when the surgery is finished have someone check that the NEW YORK doctor didn't bury an A-Rod shirt in your hip! :)

  1. Best of luck Mike with your upcoming surgery. Here's to a very quick, speedy, and painfree recovery. You have been truly missed in the recent playoffs. I was very fortunate to have met you in Brockton Ma, boy are you quiet, but extremely handsome!

  1. GOOD LUCK TO MIKE LOWELL. I HAD A TORN LABRUM IN MY RT HIP AS WELL. WHEN I SAW LOWELL WINCING WITH PAIN, I KNEW JUST HOW HE FELT. I HAD THE SURGERY 2 YEARS AGO. THE RECOVERY WAS QUICKER THAN THEY EXPECTED. MIKE LOWELL IS A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE AND HE WILL RECOVERY QUICKLY, I'M SURE. WE HAVE MISSED YOU IN THE PLAYOFFS. GOOD LUCK TO YOU WITH REHAB, MIKE. SEE YOU IN APRIL.
