Ozzie a Wise man

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff October 2, 2008 03:18 PM

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - There was some wonder about why White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has gone with Dewayne Wise over Nick Swisher in left field. Think we got our answer.

In the top of the third inning, Wise blasted a 2-2 pitch from James Shields into the right field bleachers with Alexei Ramirez and A.J. Pierzynski aboard to give the White Sox a 3-1 lead.

It looked as if Shields was just about to escape a terrible jam. He allowed leadoff singles to Ramirez and Pierzynski and both players advanced on Juan Uribe's sacrifice bunt. After Orlando Cabrera popped out to second base, Shields went 2-2 before Wise pounced on a fastball out over the plate and right fielder Gabe Gross could only watch it soar over his head.

Guillen said the lefthanded-hitting Wise gave him a dimension he didn't have - defense and speed. Now, he's giving him power just like the rest of the lineup.

Boy, did it quiet this place down.
