Jacoby Ellsbury is not leading off, but you might not guess who is -- one David Jonathan Drew. With Ellsbury 0 for his last 20 and a righthander on the mound, Coco Crisp is in center (batting seventh) and J.D. Drew is batting leadoff.

Drew has hit first 64 times in his career, and out of the leadoff spot he is hitting .243 (his worst average from any spot in the lineup) with a .350 on-base percentage and a .391 slugging percentage. Drew led off eight games this season and went 5 for 29 with 10 walks.

(Career batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage against Tampa Bay starter Andy Sonnanstine in parentheses):

Red Sox
1. J.D. Drew, RF (.364 batting average, .364 on-base percentage, .727 slugging percentage)
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B (.200, .294, .267)
3. David Ortiz, DH (.188, .235, .375)
4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B (.083, .143, .167)
5. Jason Bay, LF (.200, .167, .400)
6. Mark Kotsay, 1B (.000, .000, .000)
7. Coco Crisp, CF (.300, .364, .400)
8. Kevin Cash, C (.500, .500, .500)
9. Jed Lowrie, SS (.600, .600, .800)

  1. I am so glad Coco is in the lineup tonight. He is the true centerfielder on the team. He has defense, offense (great bunter), speed and class. Ellsbury is too worried about blogging instead of taking extra batting practice and learning lessons from the veteran members of the team. He is acting like Manny. I am so happy the tables are turned on him. Go COCO you are the best!!!!!!

  1. Dont even know if I should bother posting, but Why wouldn't Tito consider batting Ortiz 4th? obviously in the past, there would be no reason to ask that question. There are several options with Ortiz batting 4th...just a thought..

  1. why not just put coco at leadoff and leave everyone else alone?

  1. it's ovaaah ... done without Big PopOut and Kevin Useless doing a thing

  1. I would suggest having Crisp batting lead off and drop Drew to #3 in the line up. Big Pop-Up can have a seat on the bench. Let Casy DH. Francona must really have it out for Sean since he never plays any more.

  1. Hopefully some amazing batting comes with this lineup...

  1. He isn't DJ Drew. It's Jonathan David.

FROM ADAM: Actually, as odd as it seems, it really is David Jonathan. I'm not sure why, but I believe he wents by his middle name growing up, and at one point his name became his initials, which, if he's going by Jonathan, would be J.D.

  1. I'm sure Joe Maddon is trembling with fear.

If they are not hitting, it does not matter what order you bat them in. But Papi still hitting 3rd just shows Tito's "loyalty" to his stars despite their having demonstrated an inability to perform.

And Youk is not a cleanup hitter.

It all hinges on how Wakefield does tonight. Bottom line.

  1. Curious curious, I am feeling kind of good about this one though, bury the weakest batters (Crip and Cash who can surprise people with their hitting but not reliably enough) and Jed and J.D. are like the two lead offs I think makes sense.

  1. i think is a smart move..
the sox need some changes.. Ellsbury is not helping the team at all, and i think coco can make a difference being a switch hitter.. thank god lowrie is back cora is a nice hitter but lowrie can make a difference too..
i think the sox will win this game and will win back in tampa..
    * i wish manny was in the line up.. Papi is really looking rusty..

  1. Fickle fans what a joke, and all Tito, Ortiz, and the rest have done 2 titles after all the heart ache, and the Nation has left them high and dry. Not Mike Diggs were coming back you wait and see.

  1. Remember ... the guy batting first is only guaranteed of one leadoff at bat. So is he really the leadoff hitter?

  1. Let's go JD - start us off right.

Best of luck WAKE - been sporting your jersey all day!

  1. They need to move Ortiz down in the lineup. Maybe he will breakout tonight but I doubt it.

  1. All I've seen and read since last nights game is gloom and doom for the Sox. Do we forget where we were in 2004 and then again in 2007 (remember game 3 of 2004 ALCS, you couldn't get much worse than that)? It has never been easy and never will be easy.....................I say rally round boys and get this thing turned around Red Sox style. GO SOX!

Posted by Griff October 14, 08 04:42 PM
  1. Why not lead off with Pedroia, and put Youk 2nd. It worked for us last year. You could then put Bay cleanup, and Drew 5th.

Posted by Dan October 14, 08 04:46 PM
  1. off to a good start ....Pedroia in cleanup than you got a lineup that can't be beat!

Posted by Levi Lederer October 14, 08 04:58 PM
  1. I think it's a good move. Batting Lowrie 9th and JD 1st gives you a good 1-2 pop at the bottom/top of the lineup where the Sox have struggled. You have Coco hitting 7th who has been getting on base and RBI producers at the 9th and 1st spot (have not seen much of Cash, hopefully he can get a hit or two out of the 8th hole).

Either way, it will be pitching that does it tonight, with the Rays scoring 18 runs the past two games....

Posted by Will October 14, 08 05:03 PM
  1. How is Ellsbury acting like Manny? I have no idea what you mean by this? Manny would actually be hitting the ball. Wasn't everyone saying the exact opposite last year at this time about Coco and Ellsbury? The Red Sox haven't lost yet. And my God poor Big Papi. Such fairweather fans! I believe that Kevin Youkilis has been hitting very well. Did I miss something here?

    Posted by elccpa24 October 14, 08 05:05 PM
  1. I second Marie...... when Ellsbury switched agents immediately after last season,
that sent up a red flag to me

  1. I say let Francona lead off and have Varitek hit cleanup. We can move Ortiz to 9th playing first base and lets have Crisp bat third as the DH

Posted by Tokyo Joe Matsuzaka October 14, 08 05:12 PM
  1. Too many automatic outs in the lineup. Ortiz, Varitek, et al need to sit down if they are hurt or strap up and perform. David puts on a good show between pitches with the posturing and the spitting in the hands, but it looks like he is swinging under water. Papi, if you are hurt please sit down.

"Cy Young" isn't pitching every night. Sometimes it is good pitching and sometimes it is a bad approach at the plate.

If it is a tied game in the late innings and the Sox get first and second with nobody out can I make a radical suggestion: BUNT!!!!!

Posted by Francis October 14, 08 05:15 PM
  1. I'd have Francona leading off on his gimpy legs. Lets move Varitek up to cleanup and drop Papi down to ninth, while playing 1st base. We can use Coco in the 3 hole and DH'ing. This lineup is what the Sox need. Go saughks.

Posted by Tokyo Joe McGinnety October 14, 08 05:15 PM
  1. Oh. She meant about the agent and Ellsbury. I totally didn't get that. However, I still don't see it. What exactly is Ellsbury doing because of the switch in agents? As far as Ellsbury is concerned right now, I don't see how it matters who his agent is. He's in his first full year. I don't think he has any negotiating power for some big contract or anything. Still not getting this.

  1. I would have considered starting Dice-K on short rest. Its going to be in the low 50's during the game tonight and its hard to get the knuckleball going when its cold out..................Also, the rays have had there way with Tim.... Could be in for a rough night...

  1. listen to you people... You weren't hatin' on ellsbury during the Anaheim series. Let's see some faith in your team. Ok, jacoby has hit a bad patch, like pedroia did. it happens. My concern is... Who does tito have on deck tonight if wakefield chokes? patchwork? delcarmen, lopez, masterson, okajima?? what if he chokes in the 2nd or 3rd inning? then what?

Posted by Anthony October 14, 08 05:18 PM
  1. Crisp, Pedroia, Drew, Youk, Bay, Ortiz, Kotsay, Lowrie, and Cash. Who cares if feelings get hurt, you need production

Posted by Wakefan October 14, 08 05:19 PM
  1. As good as Bay is, Ortiz / Bay is not nearly as terrifying as the old Papi / Mani combo. We should have let Mani be Mani.

Posted by Butch Hobson October 14, 08 05:20 PM
  1. Finally, Tito got it.

"Leadoff" hitters need to do one thing well: Get on base. Speed isn't essential to being a good leadoff hitter. It's more productive at the bottom of the order in front of weaker batters where you ned to set guys in motion to maximize your scoring chances. If anything, Drew might be our best leadoff hitter! Consistetly 400+ OBP, works counts, sees a lot of pitches. Not a guy like Ellsbury who refuses to take a pitch.

The lineup stacked with our high OBP players is what will be crucial to producing run scoring opportunities. Not steals, sacrifices, and other methods of giving away outs in front of your best hitters.

Please, Fenway faithful, don't be l;ike Joe Morgan and Dusty Baker and fall into the old traps of sacrificing, giving away outs, and "clogging up the bases". Baserunners = runs. OBP = runs. Embrace it.

Posted by SaberGuy October 14, 08 05:21 PM
  1. It will take more than sitting Ellsbury and putting Drew in lead off.
No one is hitting in the clutch, and the pen in not holding up its end.
It's a shame that this team is ending this way , they started the year with a team that any club would kill for.
Go Sox turn this thing around. ( you have the talent, lets get it done)

Posted by halfaday October 14, 08 05:21 PM
  1. I am so sick of fans attitudes in Boston! Kevin Useless??? Are you kidding me? I was at the game yesterday and heard people booing Ortiz!...How quick we forget. I've heard people calling for Tito's head. As bad as Ellsbury has been, how can you say he's not trying?? Last I checked the Sox were only down 2-1 in the series. All of you people that are so quick to give up on these guys were never fans in the 1st place and don't deserve to revel in the excitement of them winning. What a joke!

Posted by StevieB October 14, 08 05:23 PM
  1. I am not so much worried abou the line-up as I am for wakefield pitching. I would have considered pitching dice-k on short rest. Its going to be in the mid 50's tonight and its really had to get the knuckleball going in the cold. He as gotton hit around pretty hard by the rays this season aswell. Could be a rough night...........

  1. Monstah Lobstah and others making oh-so-clever nicknames up for Ortiz are the reason why it has become embarrassing to be a Red Sox fan over the past five years. Ignorant and casual fans who want to partake in the good and complain each time the Sox don't win by 12. As a native of Boston and five year resident of NYC, I am ashamed of my Red Sox fan base because we have morphed into the second coming of Yankees fans.

  1. Why the hate on for Ellsbury? This is his first full season in the majors and he's being tarred and feathered already? He put up great numbers this year and had great range and fielding in the outfield. I'm confused why Tito made him leadoff but that doesn't mean he can't contribute. I wonder what the Ellsbury haters were saying in May when Pedroia was in the middle of his slump? Fortunately for the Red Sox, making flip comments on the internet doesn't qualify someone for managing a MLB team.

  1. It's a good move. More of a concern for the Ray's strategy. DavidO would make a great cleanup hitter, by taking the pressure off to get on base for Youk. Win or lose, mix it up again tomorrow. That would show the Ray's we are more determined to win more than they are.

Francona always seemed to like line-up changes. Suit the situation. Suprise us - and, the Ray's. GO SOX!!!!!!

  1. Wakefield has always sucked in the play-offs. I suspect he will suck tonight as well. Its up to the bats tonight and Ortiz has been a shell of his former self. Jason Bay, Youlk and Perdroia are the only reliable hitters right now. Ellsbury has been terrible but last year it was Crisp who sucked and Ellsbury took his spot and performed great. Next year we need be more agressive in free agency and get a solid reliever to replace Timlin and let Varitek and his crappy bat (and terrible defense lately) go.

  1. Alright going against what the first guy said; Ellsbury is the future CF of the Red Sox. So what hes in a slump. Lets no forget that in teh ALDS he was one of the top hitters while Coco was on the side lines. Ellsbury just needs a night off to consentraite on getting back into his game.

He's in a slump? Do slumps last all year, because that's the Ellsbury I watched all year.

Ellsbury was great last year, because it was a small sample size of 116 at bats plus a hot postseason. He's been terrible this year. He's walking only 6% of the time, which is unacceptable for a #9 hitter, not even a leadoff hitters. Don't let the steals fool you, Ellsbury was a huge liability this year.

That's why most of us loved him, the 116 at bats last year was not sustainable. Now that we've seen what a full season can do, we've seen he has trouble taking pitches and getting on base, which is the first key ability to being a great hitter. Unless his production this year was solely the effect of his wrist injury in May, that non-trade for Johan is going to look quite foolish.

Knowing Theo though, hes already seen this and if Ellsbury's trends continue, will deal him as soon as he gets hot to an unsuspecting team that will soon find themselves the next Gary Matthews Jr. or Juan Pierre.

  1. Way to go Stevie B. Support the team. I am glad Coco is in. Need to change and shake things up. No knock on Els he will be back. We need some wins. Big game Wake and watch Cash be money. One game at a time. We have done this before. The only players on this team that should be booed are those who do not put out 100% and we traded him.

We just need to hope that Wake has enough after such a long time off...
I like Wake in night games at Fenway though (but, hey, I liked Lester's left handed fastball in day games at Fenway, so what do I know?).

Does everyone need a reminder of what Ortiz has done in the past? Shouldn't he be beyond insult at this stage? How about Varitek? Timlin? heck- even Ellsbury has won a championship. Shut up for once and ROOT your team on. The front runners in this town are terrible.

  1. Replacing Ellsbury is way overdue (0 for 20 & they waited this long???) but why leadoff the leftie JD Drew against the leftie Sonnanstine? Coco Crisp is a switch hitter AND can drop a bunt or steal a base much easier than Drew. Coco can move from 1st to 3rd or score from 2nd on a single ... Drew can't. Unless the Sox find a way to win this series Francona will be second guessed on MANY, MANY decisions this series.

PS: Watch for the Sox and Lee County to get together on a "Fenway South"; probably withing a few miles of the new International Airport. Environmental issues (wetlands) will have to be resolved first.

  1. If Tito didn't waste Byrd last night, we might have had a chance. Who's going to pitch now after Wakefield gives up 7 runs in 4 innings? And to the people too blind to see what's going on right now, here you go:
Wakefield has always consistently sucked (Game 4 of last year's ALCS is just one example), so there goes tonight's game unless Byrd is still good for 2-3 innings. Varitek has always sucked at bat, and his contract is finally up this year. Ortiz is still upset about the Manny trade. Beckett is still hurt.

Once in a while it's ok to realize your team sucks, you know, when they do. Which is now.

  1. I was frustrated by Jacoby's poor at bats in this series. He looks very much like Varitek waving at pitches and only occasionally having good at bats. Francona had to get more offense from lead-off and at the bottom of the line-up. Ortiz has earned respect and could break out at any time. It probably would have made sense to move him down in the line-up but he has been drawing some walks and working the counts. I am not bothered by Tito leaving him in place. If they can somehow win this game they are back on track with Dice-K, Lester and, hopefully, a more typical Beckett performance. However, Tampa has incredible momentum and better balanced pitching and hitting at this point and I wouldn't bet against them.

  1. To those of you who think the Rays are better than the Sox on paper, I'd say you have beef, however, Never Underestimate The Heart of A Champion! There is heart on this roster. All it takes is a win tonight and theyre back. Thats it....Stop Naysaying

  1. JD is 6 for 22 in the post-season with two hits in the ALDS. Hope he gets on every at bat so he can show his speed around the bases. No worries, the great popup will show again why he and the rest of the nationless is nothing with out Manny.

  1. The so-called 'fans' that are so negative about this team need to jump off the bandwagon NOW! The true Red Sox fans (as in the root of the word, FANATICS) that have stuck by this team during the last place years and the Ralph Houk / John McNamara years don't want or need your negativity! You have NO IDEA what you have in this team that has won 2 world series in 3 years, and unless Tampa Bay channels the spirit of the 69 Mets, will go on to play for and win another. Go back to mom's basement and fire up your Wii and leave this discussion to the true fans!

  1. This is amazing...we've seen the Sox go bad in the LCS in 2004 AND 2007...and come back. The fans jumping ship right now are not true fans...just imposters who want to be where the action is...shame on them! The Rays are a tough young team, but the Sox CAN come back...

  1. I blame John Keenan, he was in Tino's ear about hanging in there with Ellsbury. Good move with the switch plus it's Ortiz's coming out party tonight, he'll crush Andy. We get the lead off hitting on base and this team will start producing some runs. Wake to the rescue.

  1. I am a Red Sox season ticket holder who no longer lives in New England. I've watched nearly every Sox game on Direct TV through the mlb package over the past few years. One perspective that I have gained since moving away... it is absolutely incredible how negative so many fans are in Boston. Yes, there are players who are struggling (Ortiz, Ellsbury), some who are past their prime (Varitek, Timlin), and there have been some poor decisions made by Tito in this series as well (Beckett out for the 5th). Instead of booing those players who have won 2 WORLD SERIES titles in 4 years... support them while they are struggling and don't count them out. I didn't turn my back on the Sox when they were down 3-0 in Game 4 of the ALCS in 2004 and losing in the 9th inning to the Yankees, don't turn your back on the Sox now.

  1. Hey RedSox fans,

Didnīt you just wish MANI WAS MANI during these time of the baseball year???
No matter how bad of a slump another player would go through, but MANI was going to deliver the goods...Now, without Mani, Big Papi has turned out to be Big Popout, Kevin Youk just a good player who hits when no one is one the base, Jacob who canīt hit one single ball and the pitching is really bad for a team with a payroll of almost USD200million...Keep praying, thatīs all that itīs left.

  1. Adam, Are there MORE Rays fans there tonight? It certainly sounds like and looks like a lot of Rays fans while this first inning unwraps. Unwrap is the key word here.

"The so-called 'fans' that are so negative about this team need to jump off the bandwagon NOW! The true Red Sox fans (as in the root of the word, FANATICS) that have stuck by this team during the last place years and the Ralph Houk / John McNamara years don't want or need your negativity!"

That's cute. I didn't realize that criticism meant you weren't a loyal fanatic.

"You have NO IDEA what you have in this team that has won 2 world series in 3 years"

I didn't realize the lion's share of this team even existed in 2004; that's amazing news to me.

Let's go through the starting lineups!
    2004 - Ortiz, Youk, Varitek

    How about the starting rotation?
    2004 - Wakefield

Before you start talking like the makeup of this team is suddenly Joe D's Yankees, how about you do your own research, kiddo? This team has changed and evolved every year since 2004.

"and unless Tampa Bay channels the spirit of the 69 Mets, will go on to play for and win another."

Cites? Sources? Do you have anything to back this up, or were you one of these yahoos that believed in "Yankee Mystique" and other similar baseball fairytales?

"Go back to mom's basement and fire up your Wii and leave this discussion to the true fans!"

See, true fans are educated, they understand baseball. They learn the underpinnings and the science behind it. They embrace it's quirks and it's history without being slave to mystery and conjecture. They don't, like you, assume they can glean a team's performance because "they believe it to be true" and make incredulous claims without any factual knowledge other than "LOL I'M A TRUE FAN AND UR NOT"

The fact that someone like me and my math scares you just makes me smile more since you've apparently been watching baseball for a long time and never learned a thing. It's quite depressing how much of this game you've let pass you by.

You "fans" that hide behind the "Mom's Basement" argument are just as bad as Creationists. Just because you flail your arms when I present you with facts, doesn't mean they aren't true.

Why don't you leave the discussion to people who choose the learn, question, and strive to further understand the game, and not hide behind smug exteriors and assumptions, toughguy.

Why is it easier to dismiss proven analysis for ignorance? I understand half the people here probably listen to WEEI and take their opinion that all saber guys are basement dwelling bloggers and that stats don't matter, but that is why they are usually wrong.

The only difference between Ellsbury and Juan Pierre is 9 million dollars and ellsbury strikesout more.

  1. Every fan in the park should get up and walk out. Maybe that would make enough of a statement to these guys that it's time to step up. I have been watching the Sox since I was 5 years old and I can tell when they want to win and when they want to lose. They are lifeless, hang-dog and without spirit. Go home and get ready for next year.

  1. I thought after last night the Rays would be too tired from running the bases that we may have had a chance. I guess not with a very good young team like this. We'll have to get'em in FLA!

  1. Funny how Boston has gone from greatest fans ever to fair weather fiasco with the Pats and now the Sox..I was at the ALDS game 4 & was getting yelled at for standing up..Fenway was nothing compared to the Phillies park or Chavez. Lets clean out this overpaying fair weather fan base..a loss might do the program some good.
    But I digress...heres your best line-up
    1)coco(ellsbury) based on pitcher success
    2)pedro
    3)youk
    4)papi
    5)bay
    6)drew
    7)lowrie
    8)kotsay(casey)
    9)Tek

  1. Bottomline- w/out Manny, this line-up doesn't scare anyone anymore. When you have Manny and Ortiz back to back, there is nothing more frightful for a pitcher. Now, there's simply no fear.
