Red Sox lineup

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff October 1, 2008 05:13 PM

Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew are both in there. They may be slightly ailing, but, to be sure, this is the lineup the Sox want to put on the field.

(Career batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage against John Lackey in parentheses)

RED SOX
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF (.000, .000, .000)
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B (.417, .462, .583)
3. David Ortiz, DH (.333, .412, .700)
4. Kevin Youkilis, 1B (.294, .294, .647)
5. J.D. Drew, RF (.313, .389, .500)
6. Jason Bay, LF (Has never faced Lackey)
7. Mike Lowell, 3B (.158, .158, .158)
8. Jed Lowrie, SS (Has never faced Lackey)
9. Jason Varitek, C (.208, .296, .333)
SP -- Jon Lester

Lester is 1-1 career against the Angels in four starts with a 7.78 ERA in 19 2/3 innings. He has struck out eight, walked nine, and yeielded a .393 batting average against.

Lester made one start agains the Angels this season. He earned a no-decision and allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out one.

  1. I hope Drew and Lowell can contribute. My gut tells me we should go with Youk at 3rd, Casey at first, Coco in center and Ellsbury in right.

Let's win the first one tonight.

  1. Scott from San Fran 1
    Mazz 0.
I told him Drew would bat 5th in the chat, and commented on it earlier today. Sure, I'll brag.

Also, as I've been saying for seven weeks or more, this has to be the first playoff team to ever use a lineup it never once used during the season. Amazing to me.
For the record I also told Mazz Lowrie would hit 8th over Tek. Better RBI guy right now.

  1. Maybe Lowell or Drew will pull a Gibson tonight, limp around with the winning run and catapault us to the Series victory!!!

  1. Casey is so bad in the field he makes Kevin Millar look like Wes Parker. We will lose any game that Casey is at first. Youk has to stay at first no matter what.

  1. I would leadoff Pedroia, bat Bay or Drew Second (Elsbury should hit eighth or ninth. Reason being, Pedroia is red hot, can set the table and this would guarantee him 5-6 ABS per game. Bay deserves to be moved up.

    Here is my proposed lineup

1 Pedroia 2B (Clearly the best hitter on the team in '08. The Sox need to max his ABS)
2 Bay LF (Why not?, He's been consistent, more so than Ellisbury in the leadoff hole)
3 Ortiz DH (Leave him alone)
4 Yuk 1B (Has filled into the 4th slot admirably) Mave play 3rd if Lowell cant go
5 Drew RF (Let's see what happens) ? Kotsay will get action.
6 Lowell 3B (Get 2 ABS and bring in Cora to play SS and move Lowrie to 3B if we get a lead)
7 Lowrie SS (Better than Jacoby and Tek this year... (Check the numbers)
8 Elllsbury CF I'd take the pressure off of Jacoby and let him play...(Greenlight on the base paths)
9 Varitek C (Whatever you get offensively is a bonus) He is in the lineup because there is nobody in the game that calls a better game.

  1. Please tell Me WHY batting Tek ninth is a good idea ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
If he gets on Ellsbury's speed becomes a non factor !

  1. I told Tony Mazz that Scott from San Fran is a tool, and i was right. and for the record, i also told him that he probably has nothing better to do than spend all day chatting and bragging about predictions that he made to his imaginary friend in his mothers basement. I'll be bragging about this one all night!

Because 1. he sucks and will not get on base 2. he will get the least amount of at-bats of any player, limiting his time to suck.

  1. U cannot put two major question marks (Lowell, Drew) batting back-to-back. That is the reason for the new order.

  1. Homer, did you stay up late watching Failure to Launch last night and want to show off your new cliche-ridden verbage. A Tool who talks to his imaginary friends in his mothers basement. What's next? Are you going to "throw me under the bus?" Should I "step off bro?" Or are you off catching your vine int the jungle so you can WAR against Scott from San Fran, you mensa you!!

Sit down and watch the game, poor yourself another PBR and try for the first time in your life not to spit when you talk a notch too loud to be socially acceptable.. That's the spirit...
And don't forget to fake cough when you call your boss at UPS tomorrow. Just saying...

  1. paul, have you watched the sox in the last month??????? in case you didn't notice ellsbury has an EIGHTEEN GAME HITTING STREAK GOING, it would be outrageous to move him out of first(also he's hotter than pedroia) and he's a great guy to have in front of pedroia, ortiz, and youk when he's hitting as good as he is right now(actually best on team)...

  1. Is it me or does it appear Tek bats much better from the right side? If so, can't we convince him to stop trying to be a switch-hitter? He's a sure "K" when batting from the left side, and he's better power-wise from the Right. If he's going to play regularly, I think that's his best chance of contributing offensively.

  1. Hey all, wanted to know if any of you caught the article about Manny in yesterday's Globe. He says that the entire time he was here he was unhappy. Its an interesting article but a lil hard to believe that he was miserable the whole 8 years here.

  1. wow, scotty, guess i really touched a nerve there huh? sorry i was the only person that commented on your awesome predictions, as everyone else that posted on this topic must not have appreciated them for what they were. you must have been disappointed when you came back to read all lof the comments praising your foresight and saw that i was the only one that even acknowledged it. and next time you make fun of someone as an obnoxious low-life drunk, just make sure you have a thesaurus handy, because i won't be POURing my PBR tonight, i'll just drink it right from the bottle. but you are a POOR excuse for a sox fan. just typing...
