Sox lineup

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff October 13, 2008 12:43 PM

Two items of note: Alex Cora gets the start at shortstop over Jed Lowrie, and manager Terry Francona sticks with slumping Jacoby Ellsbury in the leadoff spot.

(Batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage against Tampa Bay starter Matt Garza in parantheses.)

Red Sox
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF (.462, .500, .462)
2 .Dustin Pedroia, 2B (.214, .267, .286)
3. David Ortiz, DH (.200, .273, .800)
4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B (.083, .214, .083)
5. J.D. Drew, RF (.400, .500, 1.200)
6. Jason Bay, LF (Has never faced Garza)
7. Mark Kotsay, 1B (.000, .000, .000)
8. Jason Varitek, C (.250, .400, .250)
9. Alex Cora, SS (.000, .000, .000)

  1. Terry Francona is managing like a complete moron in these playoffs.

  1. he also sticks with slumping Ortiz in the 3 spot

hopefully the return to fenway will help Jacoby get some good swings. If he struggles again today I sure hope they start Coco next game

  1. The should switch Ellsbury out and give Coco Crisp a chance at the lead off.

  1. The more the injuries pile up there is less and less Tito can do here. Losing Lowell means he's short a big bat and has to stick woth Ortiz when it's obvious he's not right. Having an injured Beckett means he winds up burning the pen. Injuries are part of the game but if the Rays take it all that will be remembered that they won, not that the Sox were down a starting pitcher, #5 hitter and really their #3 hitter.

  1. You gotta realize that whether Ortiz is slumping or not, he's still dangerous and protects Pedroia. Also, the setup with lefties at 1 and 3 makes it more likely that Pedroia faces a lefty when Tampa's in the bullpen. It doesn't matter if Jacoby and Ortiz strike out every time at the plate today, if Pedroia goes well, those two have done part of their jobs. Go Rays!

  1. Timlin should be sent home and Beckett too! The Sox are a better team right now without Beckett.

  1. I am concerned the Tito hunches, i.e. sticking with Beckett too long and the aforementioned line-up changes are indications he may be second guessing himself!
