Thursday leftovers

A couple leftover videos from Thursday's Q&A sessions with the Sox and Rays with a focus on Tampa Bay Game 1 starter James Sheilds.

In the video above, Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon talks about what makes James Shields the ideal starter for Game 1.

"Focus," said Maddon. "He's just got tremendous focus. He just sees the catcher's glove, and he's got a lot of confidence. He's got a lot of self-confidence, beyond being good. He's got all this inner strength, intangible stuff, that permits him to be able to do these things in these moments... Even though he had a pretty successful year last year, he wasn't satisfied with that. He has all of these inner desires to get better, and that's why he's a good pick for tomorrow's game."

In the video above, Shields talks about facing David Ortiz. "Oh, man, I mean, David Ortiz, I've always told people he's one of the most feared hitters in the box," said Shields. "This guy gets in the box and he pretty much covers the whole entire box. We've just got to be careful. I'm going to try to hopefully get the guys out beforehand, and if he hits one off me, hopefully it's a solo home run. But I'm going to try to change my approach a little bit as far as he goes."
