Wakefield pitching Game 4

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff October 8, 2008 11:41 AM

Terry Francona is supposed to meet the media in a couple of minutes, but we can clear up at least one thing beforehand: Tim Wakefield will be pitching Game 4 of the ALCS (Tuesday at 8 p.m.), according to sources in the Red Sox clubhouse.

What this likely means is that Paul Byrd will be pitching out of the bullpen during the series.

We'll have more after Francona’s press conference, at which he is expected to announce his ALCS rotation.

  1. Good, this will put an end to the nonsense of starting Wake at the Trop. Check the number people, he's been dreadful there for the past few years.

  1. Wake pitches well in the cool autumn air ... the knuckler knows to knuckle at Fenway during October and NOT in the thin dome air of Tampa. He'll be tough to hit if he has his control on.

  1. I would put Wake #2 but I don't have two WS Rings.

  1. If Becket is healthy, he should be going game one, Lester 2 & push back Dice K who is clearly the #3. He also taxes the bullpen, which you hate to do in game 1. Terrible decision.

  1. #4 Beckett IS NOT 100% though is he?. His command was awry last time out. It's a luxury you can't afford at Trop Field. Better for him to pitch at Fenway. Excellent Decisions re : Beckett and Wake

  1. I think they should go with Beckett in Game 1, Lester in Game 2 and Dice-K in Game 3. Beckett would have normal 4 days rest and so would Lester. I guess they are going with Dice because he pitches better at home. My worry is that Lester may only get to pitch 1 game if we need him. Dice K will most assuredly get 2 starts in Game 1 and 5. That could be a problem.
