Boras: Sox haven't begun Varitek talks

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff November 24, 2008 01:21 PM

Scott Boras, the representative for free agent Jason Varitek, told the Globe's Nick Cafardo this afternoon that the Red Sox have not begun any negotiations with the 36-year-old catcher.

Boras also said he knows nothing of a reported one-year offer made by the ballclub to Varitek.

WEEI.com reported earlier today that the "Red Sox' initial contract offer to . . . Varitek this offseason was for one year," and that the proposal did not approach the annual salary of Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, who signed a four-year, $52.4 million deal last offseason.

Boras cited Posada's contract as a possible benchmark for Varitek at the general managers' meetings earlier this month.

Varitek, who has been with the Red Sox since 1997, batted .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 2008.

  1. Thank God the Sox didn't make an offer to him...He might just accept it...

  1. Every argument for bringing Tek back seems to come down to this - he would be a great pitching coach. How about we offer him a 1 or 2 yr contract with the price adjusted down to the expectation that the sox would be paying for pitching help and thanks for past performance.

To be entirely realistic, given Tek's deteriorating offense, we are faced with the choice of hanging onto the past or winning championships in the future. Epstein's being paid to make the right hard headed decisions. Hopefully he won't flinch.

  1. Maybe, maybe not. How can you tell when Scott Boras is lying? His lips are moving.

  1. THE RED SOX WOULD BE MAKING A GRAVE MISTAKE BY NOT SIGNING JASON VARITEK. DUE THEY REMEMBER WHEN HE WAS HURT AND COULDN'T PLAY. THE TEAM FELL APART. HE MAY HAVE NOT HIT AS GOOD AS IN THE PAST BUT HE IS VERY VALUABLE TO THE TEAM. ALOT OF FANS WILL BE QUITE UPSE IF HE SIGNS ELSEWHERE. HOPEFULLY THE RED SOX WILL SEE THIS

  1. Like we should believe what that maggot..I mean "Mr Boras" says.
What a loser..I'm torn about Tek-he calls a great game, great leader, yada, yada, yada. But his bat is seriously past it's prime. If we can get Jarod Saltalamacchia too, and maybe re-sign Tek to a shorter deal-probably won't happen though.

  1. Scott Boras is a moron, and his client is washed up. One year is generous...

  1. Tek might have only hit .220 and was absolutely pathetic at the plate but his new girlfriend Heidi Whatney is very beautiful.People, don't worry, Tek isn't going anywhere.

  1. Borass is a moron to think Epstein could be that dumb! He would never pay automatic out Varitek anywhere close to what Posada is getting. Posada can hit and Varitek can't anymore. If Epstein offers Varitek more than $2MM for one year, he should be fired. Varitek should admit he stinks. For Borass to bring up all his ridiculous stats on the Sox playing 600 baseball during Varitek's tenure is pure manure. The 600 % may have something to do with Martinez, Beckett, Schilling, and all the other outstanding Sox pitchers over the years. I admit I can't stand Borass. He's everything that's wrong with b-ball. He always inflates the player's worth.worth.
    never getsnever gets a go

  1. Tell Scott Boras he's going to wait until hell freezes over with his "starting point of 4-years, 56 million dollars. He's be waiting if it were 5.6 million dollars...even .56 million dollars. Varitek is a no-tool player. He has no skill whatsoever. Handling this pitching staff is overrated. Daisuke shook him off more than a stripper with tassels, Beckett doesn't need him and he doesn't catch Wakefield. Lester is a great pitcher, Varitek or no Varitek. Varitek never could hit and now is worse. He has spent the last 4 years batting behind one of the most potent lineups in baseball and has 43- 60 RBIs. Anyone could do that hitting in that spot. He can't run, throw runners out or do anything mildly resembling playing this game. Package DelCarmen and prsopects to the Dodgers and get Russell Martin NOW ( a.k.a - yesterday ). We don't need or want Varitek. If we get Martin, Teixeira and a good #3 or #4 starter, we're all set. Boras has no clue about this game - only his wallet. He is losing credibility by the minute for his other clients, asking this kind of money for Varitek. Everyone should be calling Theo and ask him to let Varitek go....far far away.....

  1. Boras should be banned from MLB. He lies in order to have teams compete for players. When will the owners wise up?

  1. Boras.. Posada money looks like over spending by the Yanks so why would it be a bench mark for TEK who has had lower stats the last 2 years? yes he is a very good defensive catcher who runs the pitchers well but come on 52.4 mil? get a life Borass

  1. Bye Jason - You will always be welcome back in Beantowne (and in Altamonte Springs, FL, if you don't bring Heidi with you). I appreciate all you have done here in your 10+ years (thank you Heathcliff Slocumb). Wish you could remain but that's your choice and the sleeeze you call an agent..........GGOOO Karen !

  1. Outside of Dale and Holly, the remainder of the so called sports experts on WEEI
are nothing but a conglomeration of loud mouths who most of the time are wrong more than they are right.

  1. I treat all comments from Scott Boras as lies -- as the old saying goes:
Q: How can you tell when he is lying?
    A: His mouth is open.

  1. The greatest thing about a player like Varitek are the intangibles...and sadly, it's hard to put a price tag on such things (i.e. game preparation, instinct, leadership and physical fitness). His game is not what it used to be, however I would love to see him remain here (for the right price). Albeit, in some sort of a diminished "playing" role, but continue as a leader/mentor/man behind the green curtain, if you will. Yes, Heidi is hot and Scott is a snot...one I want to see more of, the other.....NOT.
p.s. Was DONNA serious with "DUE THEY REMEMBER..."!?!?
