Scout's take on Ramirez

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff November 19, 2008 12:01 PM

A summation of new Red Sox reliever Ramon Ramirez from a major league scout who watched him six times live this season:

"Throws 92-95 [mph] with a heavy, late-life fastball . . . Gets away with mistakes over the middle of the plate because his fastball has so much late life . . . second-best arm in that bullpen [to Joakim Soria] . . . Likes to challenge hitters . . . Definitely a setup man with potential to be a closer down the road . . . Plus fastball, plus slider, has a splitter or something that resembles a splitter . . . Average command . . . Deceptive delivery makes it hard for righthanded hitters to pick up his fastball . . . Hitters can't pick up his arm slot on the backside . . . Needs to tweak his off-speed pitches . . . Can throw his slider too hard . . . Very athletic. Fields his position well . . . Has an above-average 1.22 [second] release point [from the breaking of his hands to catchers mitt] on his slide step, 1.3 from the windup . . . Works fast."

  1. Crisp finally looked like the guy they traded for and they give him up. Might be the best defensive center fielder in AL.

  1. Who is the new 4th outfielder. Drew misses about 1/3 of the season each year; and Ellsbury has streaks of brilliance in the field; Crisp was the lone true center fielder and excelled consistently. Crisp will be missed; his baseball grit and poised contributions in the clutch...I'll miss those over the shoulder catches.

  1. I agree he sounds like the second coming. Is he going to be the perfect set up guy or have good numbers but allow 90% of runners on base to score?

I agree that Coco's defense was a keeper. He wasn't Fred Lynn at the plate but he could hit when needed. He reminded me of Devon White in Toronto. They didn't care if he ever hit the ball because he saved a lot of runs. KC got a winner with Crisp.

  1. Ellsbury will be a superior defensive CF to crisp over the long run IMO. Offensively, he will come around. Coco will workout well in KC. All in all, its a great deal that will free up 5million in payroll, that can be added to the 15 million they shouldn't pay Burnett, and given to Teixeira to complete the 20million/year he will need.

  1. At least he has some track record of success in the AL. He is a decent pitcher. I think the Sox are poised to move Delcarmen now. They've effectively replaced him in the pen. Maybe that is what they needed to get a catcher. Maybe, just maybe, Ramirez will be moved to get us a catcher.

  1. Coco deserves to have a chance to play every day, as does Ellsbury. The Sox had tremendous depth in the outfield, which will be diminished, but clearly they weren't going to keep both center fielders for the long-term. Coco showed his worth down the stretch and during Game Five. He will likely thrive in KC.

  1. Ellsbury is a superior fielder to Crisp and will get better. Although his arm isn't real strong, it's much better than Crisp's, who sort of threw like my sister. Ellsbury will hit over .300, is faster, a better baserunner, and will have more power than Crisp. Overall, he's going to be a much better ball player. Crisp also had durability issues. That being said, Crisp did a good job when he played for the Sox, and took this past season with class and dignity. He's a good team player and those kind of guys have more value than stats show. He'll be missed.

  1. Like the move, can't have enough bullpen help. Crisp is a nice player but we can get another backup, and for less money.
I like freeing up some cash- looks like they are going to make a run at least one or two big names

  1. Does this mean that every time this guy gets into a game.....we'll be referring to everything he does as simply "Ramon being Ramon" ? After all, he IS named "Ramirez", folks......(GREAT LINE, Michael Felger !!!!)

  1. "Average command." That's a little worrisome for a reliever that has to be able to throw strikes. More pitching is always helpful and agree with the trade in theory - positional player for pitching. Let's just hope this guy can put it over the plate when it matters.
