Report: Sox were ready to suspend Manny

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff November 16, 2008 02:32 PM

It doesn't change much if anything at this point, but it appears the Red Sox were ready to suspend Manny Ramirez in late July.

Several baseball sources told ESPN's Pedro Gomez today that Red Sox management delivered an official letter of suspension to Manny Ramirez at 11 p.m. on Fri., July 25, shortly after Ramirez sat out his second straight game with the club. The letter informed the slugger that the suspension was to go into effect on Sat., July 26, and stated the reason for the suspension was Ramirez's unwillingness to play, according to the report. Ramirez cited a knee injury as his reason for missing the two games, but MRIs on both of his knees failed to find physical damage.

Copies of the suspension letter, Gomez reports, were also sent to Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association, and Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras.

According to the report, Ramirez called the team several hours later to inform them he would indeed be playing on July 26 against the Yankees. Ramirez did play, but after what is now a well-documented saga, the left fielder was traded to the Dodgers a week later.

  1. The headline would be.."Manny has cranial x-ray...shows nothing". Good riddance to a great hitter, not a great baseball player. Bill, Naticj

  1. Oh this changes something all right...it's just more fuel for the fire of doubt - any team that pays for Manny HAS to know that they're getting a whiny little brat who'll quit on them with no warning, no matter what they pay him.

  1. Not really caring about this news. He's gone. He'll never play in Boston again. Why does the Manny thing continue to be news? I'd rather hear about the Revs than Manny.

  1. Pete Rose the all time hit leader was banned for life from baseball and Cooperstown for betting on games. Ramirez breached his contract, told many lies and threw a game watching 3 strikes go by. His selfishness caused a major upheaval in the organization and a black eye to baseball. I hope the writers remember this and at least do not let this selfish self-centered player in to the hall as a first ballot. Although his skills deserve it, what he has done is a disgrace and he has gotten off way to lightly. He should've been suspended by baseball, but Bud Selig is too much of a wimp.
How does Pete Rose get stiffed (I'm not saying he shouldn't have) and Manny doesn't even get a suspension?

  1. Manny plays a game that he supposedly loves. He makes more money than he ever imagined. It's unfortunate that he doesn't realize how he takes the game for granted, not to mention the fans who pay his outrageous salary.

We all loved Manny. Hell, we even loved the Manny being Manny bs for awhile. He was unique & he was fun entertainment. But everyone knew he quit on this town & he quit on his teammates (more than once). Maybe some day Manny will acknowledge (at least to himself) that he could have & should have done better. Then again, if Manny continues to be Manny, that will never happen.

  1. #17 - Sorry George, but if you cant see the difference between being a pain in the butt (Manny), and a liar, cheat, and a convicted criminal (Rose) - you seriously need to wake up. There are plenty of people that are in the Hall of Fame, that were notorious bastards with bad attitudes. That doesn't disqualify you. Manny is the greatest hitter of his generation, and the fact that he is difficult to deal with does not change that. He is a FIRST BALLOT LOCK...no questions asked.

  1. Well, I just hope this proves to the last Manny suck-ups left that the guy was a disgrace to baseball.

And, by the way, those of you who think the Red Sox "leaked" this are morons too. Anytime the Red Sox were asked about Manny, their response was: No Comment. Everyone associated with the Sox had plenty of opportunities to say alot, INCLUDING Jack McCormick who he threw on the ground. No one did. So get off the Red Sox leaking crap.

  1. Manny is an extremely talented baseball player. He was never comfortable in Boston, maybe because of his N.Y. roots. It's difficult to say what kind of numbers he could have put up if he gave the game 100% effort

Posted by The Green Monster November 16, 08 09:40 PM
  1. Idiots ... you've all been brainwashed by the likes of Edes and Shaughnessy ... think for yourselves for a change. In the words of the Spaceman ... "Manny was well loved, and then he'd have his little fits, and then we'd patch things up and we'd win a world championship," said Lee. "This year, I think Boston just kind of
got fed up with winning. That's too bad."

  1. Many many hits from Manny, many of them clutch.
Papi got some balls to hit because of Manny's touch.

The fly balls that he let drop in, the old guy that he shoved,
are balanced against title flags and moments that we loved.

Adios, amigo loco, a hundred sixty mill,
was worth it just to marvel at the way you hit the pill.

  1. By ignoring this situation and just "letting it go," the Red Sox and MLB will have been irresponsible and have encouraged the next "Manny" to do the same...shame and a sin.

How about stepping up to the plate and setting the right precedent; enforcing the rules in a manner of equality?

Posted by DjM November 16, 08 09:52 PM
  1. Like this is a surprise, his juvenile behavior was a joke. His clutch hitting, RBI's,HR's and OBP are going to be missed.

  1. Now you can see why he was traded; so enough of the accusations from Manny, Nomar, Pedro, etc., who bargain (through agents) like businessmen, then whine when they are let go for business reasons, and complain that they are mistreated. I give credit to the Red Sox management for not ripping these over-paid and under-intelligent, would-be waiters and busboys who by a God-given (or genetic) predisposition are able to throw and / or hit a baseball better than almost all others. Unfortunately, they are not given much beyond that (which you can tell when they open their mouths) and will end up spending their lives surrounded by sycophants who otherwise would not even have a beer after work in the restaurant with these immature 'men' were they not filthy rich. What a way to go through life: not being held accountable for their actions, making ridiculous amounts of money for a short period of time, then watching their bodies and skills deteriorate to the level of their personalities, and having to look at the mirror the rest of their lives trying to convince themselves that their few years in the spotlight were socially significant (which we all know, in the whole scheme of things in life, they were not, especially compared to people like firemen, teachers, and social workers who DO make a difference, and do not act pompous when they do what they are simply paid to do. Manny, look in the mirror if you want to see who really loves you the most in the world (and don't forget to notice the Boras lamprey attached to your back eating the food that falls out of your mouth).

  1. At 20 million per year Manny was getting paid $123,456.79 (THAT'S A HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE THOUSAND, FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY SIX DOLLARS AND SEVENTY NINE CENTS before taxes) per game for playing 162 games, . When he missed a game because of injury or fatigue or doggin' it, this rate went up for the games he did play. He played his teammates, management, and worst of all, the Boston fans better than he played the game, and he's a great player.... just look at what he did in 2 months L. A.

Time to let go of Manny.....

Posted by Peter Tavalin November 16, 08 10:39 PM
  1. More leaks now just as the player gets to free agency. My oh my, the vindictiveness never stops. Four months after he's traded, now we hear 'he was almost suspended?' NO!' Who ever would have suspected! Duh!

What's 'sad' is the vendetta of the Sox organization and the Boston press to 'get'
back at this player for having the audacity to want to get out. But with every 'headdline', every shrill attack, every late salvo it is the Boston Red Sox and their shills whoi look bad, Not Ramirez., .

Very unprofessional, but they have to keep their pack of cub reporter happy with fresh, new stories.

How would you like to work for the Red Sox knowing this is coming?

  1. Oh please. Ramirez hit .520 w/ four homers and was the best player in the post-season. If the Sox had them, woulda been back to back championships.

No one knows this more than Theo Epstien, who is the only one that ACTUALLY quit on the team. Oh, wait, nobody remembers that...

  1. If the sox were really brave they would have suspended Manny when they felt it was appropriate and not played out their hand in the media. Now that it is over they feel it neccesary to keep on worrying about something they did not address. Move on. Focus on what you can control, not what you can't. Manny is not their problem. They should tell Shilling that too.

Posted by Pete November 17, 08 05:40 AM
  1. I agree with George. Manny should not be voted to the Hall of Fame. What he did strikes at the heart of baseball and all of sports. How do we raise young baseball fans if superstars are taking strikes to hurt their own team? What does the concept of "team" really mean if one player is willing to hurt his own team for his own benefit? This coverage is especially relevant now that Manny seeks to negotiate a new contract and profit from his actions that showed so profound disrespect for his team, other players, the fans and all of baseball.

  1. It is amazing as a Red Sox fan for 55years that I read all these comments that are so negative. If Manny was bad for the team and is now gone why do we have to continue to call him names. The leak from management just shows that the Boston Red Sox management still has to make sure that they smash a persons reputation and career just because they did not want the player in the first place. I still contend that the problems were mutual on both parties not just on Manny's side. John Henry and Theo never wanted Manny, John Henry wanted Alex and boy that whould have helped. Let Manny do his thing and play out his career without all you crying about it.

  1. Kudos to Sox Management for 2 reasons. One, they DID IT RIGHT at the time of Manny's Strike !!!! Suspension, and letters to the right people. Right on !!!!
Second, they kept it quiet and bided their time until the RIGHT time to let the news out (AFTER the Dodgers withdrew their contract offer). Now let Manny and Boras' Greed do them good. I pitty the GM that makes a better offer than what the Dodgers offered. Maybe there IS a Santa Claus!!!!!!

  1. First of all, Manny's gone and not coming back to the Sox, why do you people care? Second, funny that this story comes out after November 14 and the start of free agent signing? Where was it during Aug, Sept, Oct? Third, in response to post 12, why would this make Manny look any worse? From the story, he was about to be suspended and then all of a sudden started playing. Looks like the threat of suspension worked, which just proved that the Sox should have taken a harder line in the first place. And in response to post #17, that is just ridiculous. There are whiny brats in every sport, and the Sox never once actually suspended him or disciplined him. But the league should have? Please...

  1. I sympathize with all the posters who said, "Who cares?" I was glad to see Manny go, glad to get him out of the clubhouse, and I thought getting rid of him was a good move for the Sox. But you know? When his name is in the headline, I read the story, even though I think he's a head case. It's the same with Sarah Palin stories: just the way I put my tongue on a sore tooth, I have to find out what new weirdness does she have for us now? Even better, she washes lettuce! Maybe Manny can do needlepoint while he gives lockerroom interviews.

  1. If you could ever take Manny's head off and screw in Dustin Pedroia's, what an absolute beast of a baseball player he could be. It's all about desire and true love of the game, something sorely lacking in Ramirez. That guy will never mature. Good luck to the team that overpays for his self serving services.

  1. this isn't news. there were reports the night he sat out vs. the yankees on the radio that the red sox were prepared to suspend manny if he continued to refuse to play. but he played the next day, and so he was not suspended.

why must this be rehashed again and again and again? manny wanted to leave and the red sox wanted him to leave. the red sox got a good deal, manny went to LA, everyone was happy. he was great on the red sox, he's gone, and i really don't care what he does now - but i care even less about hearing about what he did four months ago again and again.

  1. George,
You are simple minded? Pete Rose was involved in a known illegal activity. The Red Sox can not prove that Manny breached his contract. MRI's or not there is no PROOF that his knees didn't hurt. There was no major upheaval. Talk about being overdramatic. Give me a break. How many times have you seen a batter sit on three straight pitches? If you watch baseball at all and aren't a complete embecile you've seen it more times than you can count. Whatever anyone believes there is NOTHING that can be proven. Do you have a 6th grade education Jethro?

  1. The problem is when people like Ortiz (as reported in Yahoo sports) state that the Sox would have won the Tampa games if Manny were still with Boston. Don't worry Manny will show his true colors just as soon as things don't go his way---or he gets bored. We all know the value of the dollar but, hopefully, most team players will consider the fact that stuff like MR pulled effects the enite team. It is a wonder that Francona was able to keep his sanity trying to babysit this guy. We can be a better team without this kind of selfish nonsense going on.

  1. Tired of people bashing the Globe reporter for this story. He's reiterating a perfectly legit story from ESPN. Head there and complain if you must.

The REAL problem the Manny lapdogs have with this is: Every new story that comes out undermines them. So they lash out at everyone except, of course, the real problem.

Personally, I WANT these stories to continue until Ramirez is actually signed. They're legitimate stories about a top free agent. And Manny should not be rewarded for his dogging it with the Sox by getting the biggest contract in the off-season. Stories like this scream to club owners: Buyer beware.

  1. I CARE. Manny's behavior in tanking it is a HUGE stain on the game. He got away with it, and it has set a horrible example. How can you pay a guy $20 million a year, and he tanks it? --- And don't tell me his behavior didn't cost the Sox -- In my mind, his absence in the line-up cost them a spot in the World Series, and are we all quite so sure the Phillies are the best team in baseball? We need to keep talking about Manny's planned exist. A full investigation should be launched, and if it is determined that he consulted with his agent and they contrived his exit, his agent should be sanctioned by MLB. The game is bigger than anyone player or agent.

  1. It seems really amazing that when a superstar finally leaves Boston that the player is to blame. The Manny case is not the first but the last of a long history of such antics by this club. Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn, Reggie Smith, Earl Wilson, Dwight Evans, Nomar, Pedro, etc etc.
Beware, Tek. I am curious what devious garbage their leak out on you in order not to resign you and allow you, the Captain, to walk.

He isn't the first or the last player that will do this to their organization.
He did bring some success to the Red Soxs but now it's time to move on and
without Manny. I think that they have proven that they will go on and have successful moments that will inspire fans and foes with the talent that Boston
Red Soxs have in the organization.

Obviously a lot of you are absolute morons! Susan with her comment that the Red Sox did not leak this story is perhaps the biggest moron of all. Where the hell did the story come from if not from the Red Sox? Who else knew about it? Are you just so simple minded that you can't see what is right in front of your face?
