Sabathia not on Boston's agenda

DANA POINT, Calif. -- CC Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske, indicated earlier that he had not met with the Red Sox on Sabathia. While the Sox might explore some discussions on the big lefty, right now it doesn't seem to be in the plans.

Sabathia, who is from the San Francisco area, would like to be on the West Coast. The Angels and Dodgers are interested.

Sabathia was offered a 5-year, $100 million deal by the Brewers last weekend, but will seek other deals.

Jim Munsey, the agent for Texas catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, indicated moments ago that the elbow strain his client had has subsided and he will begin playing winter ball in the Dominican for Escogido on Nov. 15.

Agent Scott Boras had eight meetings planned today, one with the Red Sox.

Boras continued to speak about Jason Varitek and Manny Ramirez. The Ramirez theme was more of how Ramirez pays for himself because of increased attendance, citing the 5,000-6,000 more fans per game he put in the seats at Dodger Stadium upon his arrival.

The Varitek theme of being a winning ballplayer and helping the Sox become what they've become was again the meat of his talk on the catcher.

  1. Forget trying to sign any of the big ticket free agents! Sign Josh Bard to play Catcher,Will Ohman, and trade with whom ever for a bat..Sign one of the 2 Japanese pitchers either Kenshin or Tazawa and then let the chips fall where they may.

  1. If Manny pays for himself in LA drawing 5-6000 more fans to games... what did he do in Boston? Last time I checked, Fenway Park was still sold out after the trade and I have faith the sellout streak is not over and will continue next season!!

  1. Tek is priceless as a game-caller, but he is rapidly approaching the 'sell-by-date' for catchers and his automatic out on offense almost evens out his worth as a signal caller. I think Boras has blundered by demanding so much for him. No National League team would take him - can any team withstand 2 automatic outs in their lineup? (pitcher and Tek). It would make sense for us to keep him with a hometown discount, but that doesn't seem to be in Boras' vocabulary.

  1. Boras is a problem agent. He demands to much money and to long of a contract for the players he reprensents IMO. Sorry to be late with this post but I have been very very

  1. And who cares? This is not news. Boston cannot sign everyone. You can never have enough pitching, but they have much bigger concerns.

  1. As per your previous post re Burnett: The Sox should likewise pursue Sabathia precisely because the Yanks and other competitors will pursue him. Expressing interest in players you are not seriously interested in is a good cover for players you do have serious intent to acquire.

I suppose there are limits to that strategy. The boy who cried wolf, not being taken seriously when you really mean it, and all that.

  1. I think CC is too much of a risk to shell out the millions it will take to sign him. He's never been in the best of shape (to put it nicely) and the Brewers damn near threw his arm off this past season. The Red Sox already have very good starting pitching and depth in their farm system. Spend the money elsewhere.
