Teixeira talk
The Red Sox will face not only a steep price tag, but also surprisingly stiff competition if they want to become the fortunate team that signs Los Angeles Angels free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.
“I can tell you the interest for Mark is widespread,” said Scott Boras, Teixeira's agent. “He has certainly a lot of options. We’re doing our best just to narrow this down as much as possible. We have way too many teams to sort through at the moment.”
The field of teams interested in Teixeria, 28, could include some surprising names along with usual cast of the Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, and other big-market teams. The Washington Post reported last week that the moribund Nationals, the team with the worst record in the majors, may competitively bid for Teixeria.
The last-place Baltimore Orioles also have “genuine interest” in bringing Teixeria to Baltimore, according to a major league source.

AKA Boras talking out of his A$$ ... there are only a handful of teams that can sign him.
Theo got get him!!
Boras is such a tool. He knows that there are only a handful of teams with the money that Tex is looking for. Of course, there are enough stupid GM's out there that buy into Boras' crap.
Teixeira is a remarkable talent, no question, but so is Alex Rodriguez. If anything should be learned from A Rod and the Yankees it is that one player does not mean success for a team. I'd rather have a Mike Lowell, Youk, or Dustin Pedroia who play hard, care, and contribute in the clubhouse than one prima donna. We finally are past Manny, let's not get back in the same rut.
how much was Tampa's payroll this season? the biggest collection of millionaires won't guarantee a pennant, as we've seen from the Yankees year after year.
"Genuine interest" - is that as opposed to the phony interest Baltimore shows in other free agents? Heh. Sometimes people don't realize what they reveal when they open their mouth. (Or post in forums like this one.)
Anyway: The Sox have a real need for Tex' bat/glove in order to remain competitive next year. There are too many factors that could lead to downside from this year. Pedroia cannot reasonably be expected to have another MVP year and carry the team again. (Yaz, you'll recall, had only one season of 1967-level greatness, though of course he had many good years.) Ellsbury may continue to flounder (and Crisp can't be brought in to spell him anymore). Lowell is a big question mark. Youk could get injured. Drew WILL get injured. Ortiz, Varitek - more of the same?? And so on.
Acquiring Tex mitigates a lot of that potential downside, and then some. Think of him as an insurance policy against Murphy's Law. Yeah, his agent's an ass, and hyping him like crazy. But the Sox really do need that piece of the puzzle.
How are they 'moribund'? Doesn't that mean that they are 'dying'? Any news on them going out of business? That would be a splash!
