Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein announced this afternoon that the club has added three players to its 40-man roster: lefthanded pitchers Felix Doubront and Hunter Jones, and catcher Mark Wagner.

Doubront, 21, split last season between Single A Greenville and Single A Lancaster (now Salem), combining to go 13-9, the third-highest win total in the Red Sox minor league system, with a 3.69 ERA, 28 walks, and 138 strikeouts in 26 starts. He led all Red Sox minor leaguers in strikeouts and finished third in victories.

Jones, 24, finished third in the Red Sox farm system with 12 saves in 2008 and went 7-3 with a 2.45 ERA, 18 walks and 76 strikeouts in 48 games between Double A Portland and Triple A Pawtucket. He surrendered runs in just 3 of his 13 relief appearances with the Sea Dogs and posted a 0.75 ERA over his final seven outings to earn a May 15 promotion to Pawtucket, where he went 7-2.

Wagner, 24, hit .219 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI in 94 games for Double A Portland in 2008. He led all Eastern League catchers with a .997 fielding percentage and ranked second throwing out 42 percent of attempted base stealers. His is currently playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League where he is hitting .296 with three home runs and seven RBI in 17 games. He was recently rated the best defensive catcher in the Red Sox farm system by Baseball America.

The Red Sox now have 37 players on their 40-man roster.

  1. Huh. Does this mean Wagner's stock is rising?
(If it does it would be the only one these days, ha ha.)

  1. The Sox now have 4 catchers on their 40-man roster, and none of those is Veritek nor David Ross. And yet another catcher might be coming?!

  1. I was just now looking for information about this when I found your post. I'm just stopping by to say that I very much enjoyed seeing this post, it's really clear and well written. Are you going to post more on this? It seems like there's more material here for later posts.
