As predicted, Sox to leave without a deal

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff December 11, 2008 03:00 PM

LAS VEGAS -- Three days after he suggested the Red Sox would complete no transactions before the end of these winter meetings, general manager Theo Epstein reaffirmed this morning that the Red Sox expect to leave today without any news.

Estimated time of departure: 2 p.m. PST.

The Red Sox GM said the team made offers to three free agents while in Vegas, but did not identify them.

Epstein made the remarks following this morning's Rule 5 draft in which the Sox plucked pitcher Miguel Gonzalez from the Los Angeles Angels. Epstein said the Sox were still "in the middle'' of negotiations with free agents and expected no deals before club officials left Las Vegas, presumably for Boston.

Epstein also offered some criticism of the reports that came out of these meetings, saying that many of the published and internet reports were grossly inaccurate. Epstein said that club officials heard many of the same rumors but that teams found them to be unsubstantiated.

"That isn't a shot at you guys, not even a veiled shot,'' Epstein said. "It's the same for us.''

Tough to say whether or not we'll have more later as many have been strolling through the lobby pulling suitcases, headed for the airport.

  1. Theo is preaching patience, but the Sox had better not be too slow at the switch. If they return with the status quo, we're looking at a 3rd place team in the tough AL East. Get Teixeira, bring back Tek for 2 years and even add another starter. The BoSox have 40+ million off the books from last year. They'd better spend it or they'll have a hard time selling their inactivity to Red Sox nation.

  1. With the yankees acquisition of CC and now it looks like they will get Burnett and I'm sure thre'll be more to come, if the Sox stand pat and don't get Texeira and another quality starter they will be battling the Blue Jays for 3rd place in the AL East. I know they got to a game 7 in the ALCS last year but the signs are there for a much tougher offensive year with Ortiz, Lowell and Drew all question marks. Last year's team did not fair well against the other teams top pitchers throughout the entire season. A yankee rotation of CC, Wang, Burnett, Chamberlain and perhaps Petitte will be very strong indeed.

  1. Take up a collection for John Henry so that he will be able to compete with the Steinbrenners.

  1. I hope by "bring back Tek for 2 years" you're referring to a position on the coaching staff. I could see one more year as a thank you for his service, but who in their right mind would want him behind the plate (and at bat) 2 years from now?

  1. Steven I share your concerns. If the Red Sox lose out on Teixeira what we'll hear from Epstein and Co. is that the Sox were 2nd in the AL in Runs and OPS this past season so adding a big bat was not as big of a priority as the general public may feel. That's all well and good for the purposes of negotiations but in reality, the future of Boston's offense is not as rosy as those numbers may lead us to believe.

Can Lowell be depended on after hip surgery? Was Ortiz's 2008 season an anomaly or a sign of things to come? Should we expect the same MVP-type seasons from Pedroia and Youkilis? Is Ellsbury going to improve?

Obviously not all of the answers to those questions will be on the negative side and only time will tell. My point is, sticking to the status quo would be a step backwards with Tampa Bay appearing to be here to stay and the Yankees doing everything in their power to improve. Let's not forget that a portion of those team statistics were the result of one Manny Ramirez...

  1. Like you would do a better job than Theo, Steve!!!??? If you think that for some reason that the Sox are not persuing, then you must be a newbie! We will be fine!

  1. Sox do a great job at getting value. they have already created great competition in the middle relief battle. the sox have a ton of money to go after mark texiera. i would suspect he will be landed by the sox. varitek, lugo, the 4th outfielder situation should be interesting.. however those three coming back will be no big deal if.. beckett is healthy along with texiera coming aboard.
i trust theo knows that his lack of value in middle relief cost him last year. you can't predict injuries but he has been dancing the dance with the devil on middle relief for 5 years.

  1. I think they have the players, perhaps a better year from Ellsbury would help and a starting pitcher from their Farm System may surprise everyone. Yes, Theo has been a little passive, but I have grerat faith in him, he's proved it the past two years.
    GO SOX.
I think they would do fine with last years year end shorstop, Lugo isn't my favorite in that position.
Now that Coco is gone, they could use some backup for the frrequently injured JD in right.

  1. Sox only need to keep pace with the Yankees, no? Sox have a better bullpen. Sox have a healthy DH. Sox have a better 1-2-3, maybe 4 rotation. Sox now have a better 1-7 batting order. I don't understand the panic. I'd even compare across the rest of the American League while we're at it.

  1. I like to ask the unnamed source inside the Sox organization, when exactly CC will be hurt while ptiching for the Yankees. The guy's in his prime. His size is somehow pridictor of his health? I bet that's what was said when Ruth was traded.

Yankees are much improved right now than Red Sox. They went out and signed the premier pitcher in MLB. Tex signing should be a no brainer. Tex, a catcher and another front line pitcher and we can dominate the East. What's the hold up?

  1. I,m preety sure RedSox fans everywhere were not excited by the announcement of a new logo(a great money making schemefrom a merchadising standpoint, for a team that is already one of the most prosperous in MLB).How about spending some the hundreds of millions being minted onTeixeira and keeping pace with the despised Yankees.Teixeira is all that the Sox claim to covet from both a performance and off-field standpoint and would a critical factor in their staying in the hunt for additional world series championships in 2009 and the next decade..Don,t the fans who pay as much to watch their as any deserve it.
