Derek Lowe closing in on deal with Mets

Posted by Staff December 24, 2008 11:22 AM

According to a baseball source, The New York Mets appear to be closing in on a deal for free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe.

The potential deal is believed to be four years in length, or three years with a vesting option. The contract is estimated to be worth between $14 million-$16 million per season. Lowe just finished up a four year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers.

In 2008, Lowe was the Dodgers most consistent pitcher down the stretch and finished with a 3.24 ERA to go along with a 14-11 record with 211 innings pitched.

  1. Good for Lowe if he can get a deal like that. He was always faithful to the Sox and I'm sure would return if was given the option. Hopefully fans at Fenway show their appreciation. To me, this seems nothing like the Texeira deal.

  1. There may be good reasons to boo Derek Lowe - I seem to remember allegations of marital infidelity, which seems a good reason - but accepting a contract isn't among them. Wouldn't you accept huge piles of cash if someone offered them to you, just for throwing a baseball? I know I would.

  1. why would you EVER boo derrek lowe? EVER?! do you really not remember what he did for you in 04?? thickheaded boston fans.............

  1. The Sox could afford that. 3 yrs with a vesting option to a guaranteed 200+ inning, sub 3.70 ERA pitcher. Pitching is a reasonable need, and this is a reasonable contract. Teixeira was not. Bring Lowe back to Beantown.

  1. I would not boo Lowe. The front office never made it clear they wanted him for next year.

  1. Aww... MoneyTalks... Sounds like you have a bit of envy since your GM is afraid to pull the trigger. You're a big market team too, you could have bid the same as anyone else, but you think you have this high and mighty stance, well you don't get that feeling after spending 100 million on a 3 year picther. So quit complaining to us NY'ers and go complain to your GM and owner about spending a dollar or two.

  1. I can't wait for the next free agent acquisition by the Sox this winter. Actually, make that the FIRST free agent acquisition...

I can't wait for the "we can't compete without a state (i.e. taxpayer) funded new facility" press release or email to come out of Yawkey Way.

Keep crying poor while squeezing fans for every dime you can.....

  1. Derek Lowe will be an excellent addition to the Mets and Red Sox fans should be happy for both sides. Plus, be happy that the Yankees took AJ Burnett instead of Derek Lowe. Burnett only comes through in his contract year, while Lowe is reliable and consistent.

Posted by JoeZ December 24, 08 12:44 PM
  1. If the sox weren't willing to pay $9 mil for Lowe in 2005 when he was younger, why would they want to pay $14 mil now?

Posted by kyle December 24, 08 12:50 PM
  1. Lucchino, Epstein, and Henry are becoming cheaper and cheaper everyday. There is no way this team does not have tons of cash to spend on free agents. Please...Lowe would have done wonders with the young pitchers like Masterson. Instead, we have no catcher...got screwed on Lugo by Boras, and now over 12 million bucks (which they could make back on merchandise) they turn down signing a first baseman in his prime with a great bat. Now he gets to bash us with the Yankees.
People forget quickly how bad this team looked against Tampa offensively. Pitching-wise..the team made mistake after mistake to the young hitters from Tampa. Why is it that Philadelphia made the Tampa 4-5-6 hitters look like crap? Likely because of better scouting.
Also in the series, Big Papi looked like garbage...Jason Bay was horrendous. Pedroia did not do much until the last few games. I really don't see their master plan except to turn the Red Sox into the Rays or A's. Bring Manny back...he probably wouldn't even remember the fighting. Pay the guy and bring him back.

  1. I like this move for the Mets, but Lowe is an NL pitcher. He would suck against the AL. No hard feelings on Lowe - he was HUGE for us in 2004 - I believe he won the clinching game of every series in the 2004 postseason. Any Sox fan who would boo the guy is an ignoramus.

    Posted by J.P. December 24, 08 12:51 PM
  1. Geez the guy got every win for us each of the decisive games in the World Series, ALCS and ALDS when he was here.

He should be celebrated, not booed.

  1. The Sox, the way they're put together right now: Proven Winners. Will get the job done in '09!

  1. THe Sox will swoop in an grab him for less than the Mets offer. Mark my words. And no, I would never, every boo Lowe. He came to Fenway to grab his ring while a member of the Dodgers. He knew he would face repurcussions in LA, which he did, but he wanted to be here to celebrate the World Series victory.

I want Lowe back home, where he belongs. Let' s see if Theo has wings and swoops down to make a steal from another NY team ..

    Posted by tomen8r December 24, 08 12:59 PM
  1. No need to boo Lowe. He did us right when he was here. Brass didn't make him a priority so he walked away for more money. You'd do the same. But I'm glad we didn't over pay for Teixeira. His bat basically replaced Giambi's just like Sabathia's arm replaces Mussina's. That, and the Yank-mes are still in third place.

Posted by MikeinCalif December 24, 08 01:03 PM
  1. Listen, as a Mets fan i will be happy if they get Lowe. He is very consistent and will fit into what the Mets like, ground ball pitchers. Dont count out the Red Sox on anything. They have a good team to begin with. just because the yankees print money every year doesnt mean its spent wisely. Tex was worth it. CC was not. A guy that is 300 lbs at 28 years old is going to break down. Burnett, if healthy is a good move. The big question is IF.. The Sox with sneak in and make a good move. Maybe they take a gamble on Oliver Perez. Hey he always beats the yankees but he will lose to the Orioles.

Posted by FrankieT.... December 24, 08 01:08 PM
  1. THE REDSOX SHOULD PULL OFF WHAT THE YANKEES DID WITH TEX AND GET LOWE. PITCHING WILL WIN THE EAST...THE YANKEES ARE NOT THAT GOOD ....TAMPA BAY IS.

Posted by saul December 24, 08 01:29 PM

  1. tex is just one more over paid player.......the yankees are just one injury from falling to third in the division. at the end of the year everyone will be laughing at the yankees like they have been doing for the last six years...they will still need 7 or more runs a game to win and it wont happen...get your popcorn ready

  1. I'm happy for D-Lowe. He had a rather interesting time with the Sox, from star closer to awful closer, to winning 20 games, being awful down the stretch in 2004 only to redeem himself in the postseason. I knew he'd get a deal somewhere, but I didn't think the sox would give him a multi-year deal at his age. Plus, I think he'd struggle against the AL East after 4 years in the fluff that is the NL West. Best of luck to him.

  1. all this hatred of management. dont you peole realize that the yankees sox rivalry has been radically altered by the new yankee stadium? as jh said, the sox just cant compete with that.

so who is to blame for this, look in the mirror.

you wanted to keep fenway when management wanted to replace it. had it not been for all your opposition, the sox might have been into a new park before the yankees were. now your team is trapped in an inadequate and antiquated park that just will not bring in the revenue to compete with the yankees.

    enjoy wating in line!

  1. "There may be good reasons to boo Derek Lowe - I seem to remember allegations of marital infidelity, which seems a good reason"

If that's the case then we should boo 99% of the players.

  1. hey now, we might still be bitter over the texiera incident (or maybe thats just me), but theres no reason to boo good ol derek lowe. its not like the mets are any form of a threat anyway.

Posted by slightly bitter December 24, 08 02:11 PM
  1. Y'sGuy,

Get a clue will ya. The current ownership is the one that killed the new fenway park plan. Also, they make plenty of cash on ticket sales (highest in baseball by far) and NESN. Get better educated before you post.

  1. Once the Mets put up their "final" offer, will Boras run back to Theo to beat it, especially if it's in the $14-15 million per year range? Or is that only a Yankee privilege?

Posted by Max December 24, 08 02:33 PM
  1. Lowe would be crazy to come back to the American League, if he wants to be a stud pitcher. He's a National Leaguer. While he pitched great in the 2004 postseason, his ERA in his last two years in Boston were 4.47 and 5.42. Of course, had the Sox re-signed him after 2004 they certainly would have gotten more out of him than the Matt Clement disaster.

  1. hitting a ball with a stick is definitely worth millions of dollars. i'm starting a croquet league if anyone is interested. i'm sure the fan base will easily outdue the nhl and the mls and you must possess a nice mallet to join.

Posted by croohno December 24, 08 02:34 PM
  1. Ted, "allegations of marital infidelity" is cause for booing! LOL ! By that logic, fans would need to boo 80% of professional athletes. These guys are rich, they travel from city to city and women flock to them. If you see married professional athletes out on the town, there is a good chance a chick is sitting on their laps! Women who marry professional athletes must either accept this as part of the package, or live in denial. Just ask the wives of Pierce and Burress.

Posted by Marc December 24, 08 02:48 PM
  1. management killed the new fenway plan b/c it was obviously not going to happen with all the oppositioin.

you can deny it all you want but go back and read what henry said this morning, its true, without a new park, you will not compete on top dollar fa's with the yankees

    Posted by Y'sGuy December 24, 08 02:53 PM
  1. If you boo Lowe you're an idiot. The 2004 guys have earned a lifetime pass in this town.

    Except Damon. Oh, and Manny.

So they save $40 mil off last year's salary... Manny, Tek and Schilling. Where that's going to go? These guys aren't like Jacobs - I can't see them spending the profits.

    Posted by J_s December 24, 08 03:10 PM
  1. Y'sGuy,

The only ting John Henry is concerned about is sticking more money in his pocket. This is the only place in baseball where you can sell an obstructed view seat (monster seats) for an average of $100 dollars a pop. That's the most disgraceful sham ever. How he sleeps at night is beyond me. In addition to that he makes huge pofits on NESN revenue and park ads.

He should be allowed to make a profit but this ownership takes greed to the extreme. They also dont want a new fenway park. Why else do you think they have been putting money into it?

They will come up with some new obstructed view seat sceme soon. Maybe the next seats will be inside the green monster with an individual peep hole for each person. I can see them charging $100 bucks for those.

    Posted by rickb101 December 24, 08 03:11 PM
  1. The Yankees have a bigger better ballpark and a larger city with a bigger fan base that will always generate more spendable cash than Boston can generate. Get used to it everyone. The Yankees have resources we will never have.

Posted by priceit December 24, 08 03:16 PM
  1. The Mets should never consider giving Lowe 16 Million. Instead they should pony up another 4 million and offer Manny 20 million per for three years. Lowe is solid #3 Pitcher and not worth that deal. I know the Mets need another starter but this isn't best for the team. Manny would earn most of that money back on merchandising and promotion alone. Let alone give them a dangerous line-up. Manny for all purposes will not go flat down the stretch.

    That's My Opinion

  1. No one should ever boo anyone from the '04 team, with the exception of Manny (for the disgraceful manner in which he left town) and Damon (for going straight to the yankees in free agency, which is an unforgivable sin unto itself.) otherwise all those guys get a standing O at Fenway every time.

And for whining Mets fans. 1986 doesn't matter anymore. It might be your glory but newsflash it is the past for us. Now leave us alone. We have to go watch out world series dvd's from this century as well as the choke job you did the last two years

  1. Don't worry red sox fans the yankees will still not make the playoffs. They have possibly the worst defensive outfield in the majors. CC Sabathia will get hurt eating a cheeseburger and I think AJ Burnett started feeling pain in his arm while he was signing his contract. Us mets fans will take Derek Lowe he's better suited for the NL. We will give you Oliver Perez you'll love him because the yankees will not win a game against ollie hope to see each other in october.

    Love, Mets fans

Needs a standing O for whoever signs him. Hope it is the Sox. Bring in Dunn or Burrell for power and the Sox are primed for another run.

LOL @ Met fans still to this day !!

It must really, really hurt these poor little Nu Yawkers that root for the Mets, that even after an offseason in which they got Johan Santana, that once again, the Mets did a total tankjob in glorious September.

Cole Hamels is right about that loser franchise-- Cole is a great pitcher that actually has seen his team win a world championship .

Mets fans would die to have the two world series lately that the Sox have or that sweet Phillies championship. I recall hearing some NuYawk Muts fans saying that after the Mets got Pedro Martinez, that the Red Sox are "just making wrong decisions"..... Oh yeah, how'd that Pedro thing work out for your team?? HAHAHAHA....

You would think BY NOW, people would wise up and realize the Red Sox have been an excellently run franchise with a wonderful farm system to boot.

(YEAH --- a FARM SYSTEM, do you know anything about that in New York? It's not embarssing to consider a talented farm system to be a must-have.)

  1. The Phillies beat Lowe in the playoffs twice. Lowe had a tantrum in the dugout like a baby, showing that he is a poor sport. If he goes to the Mets he will fit right in with the other losers there. He will not help the Mets beat the Phillies, who win as a team and have hitting, speed, defense, starting pitching, and bullpen pitching better than the Mess. The only thing the Mutts do better than the Phillies is choke at the end when it really counts. With BLowe or without him, the Mutts will be lucky to finish higher than the Marlins in 2009, and will not be a threat to the World Champion Phillies.

That said i don't want him back, he is a bad signing for an AL club at this point. I have to second what was said, we turned him down at 9 mill why would we give him 14 4 years later.

  1. I kind of agree with Harry; I'm getting the feeling that John Henry and Co. have decided to cut back and act like a banana republic team. A shame if that is so and all Red Sox fans will without any doubt will know if it this is true within two or three weeks. For us, it means another viable starting pitcher is now gone while GM Epstein strums his guitar and plays around in his gorilla suit. As for Tomen, the Red Sox never swoop down and grab a player from another team; it is always the other way around.

Maybe he can convince a team that Varitek is 33 and has years ahead of him and get him a big deal too. I cant believe the Yankees signed Cash, they seem to sign quite a few of the players the Red Sox let go!! Just not quite sure what that means tho.
