Epstein: Set expectations low
Well, in the hour between Theo Epstein's fly-by in the lobby and his first press briefing in the Red Sox suite, not much changed.
"We're not really optimistic about our chances of getting anything done while we're here,'' Epstein said just a short time ago. "We're not really close to anything. I wouldn't expect anything to come out of these meetings to be honest with you.''
Great.
Let's gamble.
Of course, things at the winter meetings can change quickly, so take all of that with a grain of salt. All it will take in the Mark Teixeira talks is for agent Scott Boras to turn up the intensity and everything will change.
Also, Epstein refused to acknowledge talks or meetings with any agents, teams or players by name, but all accounts are that the Sox did indeed meet with CC Sabathia. Epstein said that pitching coach John Farrell sat in on a meeting with one player, and neither A.J. Burnett nor Derek Lowe is believed to be at the meetings.
All for now.

Hey Tony,
Are you wearing your # 58 Cinco Ocho jersey at these meetings?

Ken Rosenthal and the Washington Post are reporting that the Sox are working toward acquiring the Mets' catcher Schneider, per two industry sources.
Are you guys having too much fun in Vegas to report on that?
Tony
Isn't this Theo's way of being hush hush about what the red sox are doing kind of like the patriots not talking much about thing's they are thinking about doing relating to players?? Do you think that the Red Sox have to come out of this meeting this week with Mark Teixeira signed to a deal ???? I would like to know what you think
Thanks

I want a job that will pay me to take a trip to Vegas AND say this to my employer. Email me please with offers.
Mazz: 1. Theo is layin the base - "nobody here but us chickens." Remember, he can move in the water with no ripples at all (e.g. the attempts for Radke & Beltre a few years ago, which no one saw coming). If it's calm as glass on the surface, the Nation is happy to be patient. 2. Give some thought to reverse-engineering some trades here. In other words, don't look first for the value-adding player you want, look at players that others are trying to unload. So for example, Adam Eaton has a donkey contract that the Phillies would love to get rid off, even to swap for an equally bad contract with a different face. Sox can take back money in those deals and get great players, e.g. Blanton.

The media are not Theo's employer. He doesn't have to tell them a thing.
