Opposing GM: Sox in lead for Teixeira

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff December 17, 2008 11:23 AM

A general manager of one of the five teams involved in the Mark Teixeira talks said this morning that in his opinion, if the talks ended right now, Boston would land the coveted free agent first baseman.

"I think they're in the lead and ahead of where everyone else is right now," the GM said. "I'm not sure who's bidding against them at this point."

Asked whether he thought the talks would end soon, he said, "You just never know where Scott Boras and the Red Sox are involved."

The Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles, Nationals, and Angels are the teams still involved in the negotiations. All appear to have genuine interest -- with the possible exception of the Yankees.

If the Yankees' desire is to strongly pursue Manny Ramirez while driving up the price on Teixeira for the Red Sox, they are apparently doing a good job. The Yankees have also been known to swoop in at the last minute and eclipse all offers if they really covet a player. And the Yankees do have a need for Teixeira, even after acquiring Nick Swisher from the White Sox. The Yankees see Swisher as a fallback choice, one who could act as a super-sub because of his ability to play first and the outfield.

The Boston Herald reported this morning that Red Sox owner John Henry has indicated the club would not give any player a 10-year contract. But the Red Sox, at least according to one GM, may be willing to go higher on the annual salary than the other teams -- at least at the moment.

  1. My money is that Tony Reagins of the Angels said that.

  1. I love this . . . the drama . . . the stupidity of the numbers . . . hey, it's not my money . . . tis the season :)

  1. Why would henry be so stupid to publicly annouce that he will not go to 10 years in any contract length? That tells the other teams involved that they can outbid or over bid. The only rational for doing this publicly would be as a public relations ploy if the sox should lose out to the yankee's or one of the other clubs. Another reason for this annoucement could be that the sox have no intention of signing the player (which has been my theory all along).

  1. I am thrilled that the Red Sox are the "front-runners" for Texeria, who I think changes our entire team make-up, but make up your mind already!!! All of this waiting is geting old.

  1. THIS JUST IN:
Mark Teixeira said to have chosen a tuna salad over chicken salad at lunch today. Reports unconfirmed as to what beverage he went with...stay tuned for more as these updates are fluid in nature.

  1. Anybody else get the impression that the sport writers are getting sick of writing about Texiera, want him to sign already so they can all focus on the saga that is Manny.

  1. Until anything is official, I'll never count out those Yankee ba$tards. If they can F us over, they will.

Maybe this is a case of homerism, but if Tex really does want to play for a winning team, why wouldn't he choose the Red Sox?

  1. Because he could buy a fat house in Laguna or Newport and play for the Angels.

  1. I think that Tex should make up his mind already!! BUT-- I do think the Sox should also look into getting Lowe and look into a couple other SPs...like: Perez, Sheets; Perez is a little erratic but can be a solid lefty in the rotation and sheets would be a nice addition maybe we can get him on the cheap.

  1. Trust me the yanks will come in at the last minute and sign teixera. This will piss alot of people off.. The sox's will then try to step up on there offer, but it will be to late, and fans will blame upper management for moving to slow.

  1. Trade Lowell? Pedroia to short, Lowell to 2nd, Youk to 3rd? if they get Texiera what are they going to do with these guys and when are they going to lock Youk up long term? Lowell has no trade value coming off that injury. When are they going to sign a starter, a legitimate 4th outfielder (will Youk platoon there?) and a catcher?

  1. on Tex's lunch choice, did the tuna salad throw in kettle chips and a soda? I need to know what really swayed his decision. And what was the volume of the tuna salad? I must know!

Teixeira is the correct spelling, as well as Lowe and Baldelli. It drives me nuts that red sox fans can spell or pronounce anything,

  1. No bidding wars with NY. If the Yankees want him at $25M over 10 years, go to Plan B. They should bring back Derek Lowe and keep Masterson in a dominating bullpen.

Good god, no. That's like asking if CNN or the Daily Show ever get sick of writing about the election. A long, drawn out bidding war for a star like Teixeira is exactly what the media wants and your comment proves it. The media doesn't make any money off of a quick trade season where everything happens quick and with little fanfare. The longer they're able to draw out a story like this, the more readers and advertising dollars they will get.

  1. I'm thinking the Red Sox would love to have Teixera, but would also be happy to see him go anywhere other than New York. I'm almost certain that they have a fall back plan with Prince Fielder via trade, as Milwaukee will give him up for young talent. Either way, the Sox win.

  1. This whole Teixiera thing gets worse by the day. It's bad enough we have to screw Mike Lowell (you know the guy everyone loved in 2007, the one fans chanted their preference for over A rod) in the process, but 8 years and 200 million dollars for what???? He may be the best agent on the market this year but he is not worth the contract he is eventually going to get.

Posted by antimazzaroti December 17, 08 01:52 PM
  1. Texiera is a greedy pig. Just pick a deal and move on. I hate the blame that people cast on Boras. The players decide who they want to play for, not the agent. The Orioles? The Nats? Who the hell is he trying to kid?

Angels, Yankees or Red Sox. Ask for their best offer, pick the one you want then move on already.

  1. I think John Henry's comments about attitudes and what not changing are irrelevant with Texeria.

Comparing Tex to Manny is like comparing apples to onions in terms of attitude and professionalism.

  1. I love seeing Manny get upset that no one is showing him the love he craves. He is oblivious to everything that he has created. I'm sure he thinks its our fault. The Dodgers should have ticked him off and picked up his option year, then they could see what a model player he isn't.

  1. I'm with antimazzarotti (altho I'm not anti-massarotti -- I could take him or leave him, really): Tex is just the biggest bat in this year's free agent class -- that doesn't make him worth Manny-in-his-prime money. He may have good numbers but one thing he's proven thus far is that he's not a guy who's gonna put a team on his back and take them to glory (a la Manny or Papi). Never did it with Texas, not with the Braves (when they thot he was their missing piece), and with the Angels he fell onto a team that was already 15 games up, then they bowed out in the first round. Sure he went 7-for-15 in that series but all 7 hits were singles and he had a grand total of one RBI. Meanwhile, on the other side of LA Manny was actually putting the Dodgers on his back. I say use all that money to lock up Youk, Ells, Masterson, Bay, Lester, etc. We've already got a fine offense and if Lowell is healthy enough to trade, then he's healthy enough to play for us (with his Fenway-perfect swing). Don't fall for the flavor-of-the-month, Theo!

  1. In the end I do believe Teixeira will be an employee of the Boston Red Sox. It will be for 8 years, about $175M, and have elevator clauses that could bring the total up to around $200M. And for all of the people who think he is just a greedy SOB, you're mistaken. He's one of the better guys in the game and will be a fantastic addition to the community.
It will be sad to see Mike Lowell leave, but if and when Teixeira signs with Boston, Youkilis will move to 3rd base and Lowell will be the odd man out. I hope he gets traded to a contender though, because he is the epitome of class. Great guy and a guy you want to see have success.

  1. I would love to see Teixeira go to the Nats, as a Red Sox fan. I think he is a great player and certainly would not mind having him playing for the BoSox, but I don't think we need him and I believe that we can create a deeper team, for a longer time, without him. With that said, I would like to see him sign with a National League team out of contention for a while (the Nats). I just don't want to play against him regularly or in the playoffs.

Posted by Bosoxfan December 17, 08 05:52 PM
  1. Honestly for the longest time I wanted Mark Teixeira, I've put up post after post and exclaimed to anyone willing to listen about why he would be perfect for the Red Sox. The more I think about it, the more I wonder what's the worth? Pitching wins more games than all star hitters do. We have the offense: Bay, Youk, and Pedroia the freakin' MVP. As for Mike Lowell, he will perform, we all know he's capable, especially with that Fenway friendly swing. Take all the money being offered to Mark and put some of it on someone like Ben Sheets and definitely pick up Smoltz, that's a steal and a half. Use the rest to lock up Youk, Pap, and anyone else we seem fit to have for a few seasons. Think about it, Mike Lowell. The man gave up much more lucrative offers with teams like the Yankees (his first team) and the Phillies (Current World Series Champions). The man gave up four year offers to play for a team he adored. He did everything right, he never complained, and even when he was injured he played his heart out. In the 2007 Rolling Rally we were holding up signs exclaiming "Resign Mike Lowell!" now the second a better player gets mentioned we start screaming for blood. We want him gone. Just like that loyalties fail, we're like greedy children in a toy store. I hope Teixeira goes to someone like the Nats or even the Angels, we'll take them in the playoffs any day. Keep what we have, the Yanks are all "locked up" with an injury prone number two starter who's barely above .500 for his lifetime record. As for Sabathia, If his heart doesn't fail within the regular season, we will gladly annihilate him in the playoffs like '07. The Yankees will collapse. Their feeling is if they throw a bunch of all stars together maybe they'll perform. They don't mesh. We mesh, if you bring in a 200 million dollar hitter, you know the chemistry will not be the same. Our team is built around scrappy players, classy heartfelt players (minus Manny), and truly charismatic characters. We will be fine with what we have. Why does everyone think that just because the Yankees sign two big names we need to respond? Was our own motto not once "Keep the faith?" So let's keep the faith in the men who have kept their faith with us. Jason Bay, Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia, they will perform, they have performed. Why do we all of the sudden have a New York inferiority complex and feel that we have to sign big names to win. Last year, as injured as a team could be the Red Sox came within two runs of another World Series berth. They can do this because they have done this. If 25 men believe...they will.

  1. "I'm thinking the Red Sox would love to have Teixera, but would also be happy to see him go anywhere other than New York."

I agree. They really do want him, but if he stayed with the Angels the Sox could live with it.

"I would love to see Teixeira go to the Nats, as a Red Sox fan"

That would be OK too, but it won't happen.

" It's bad enough we have to screw Mike Lowell (you know the guy everyone loved in 2007, the one fans chanted their preference for over A rod) in the process..."

I think it would be a mistake for the Sox to try and trade Lowell. First, how do you trade a guy coming off an injury like that? You don't - at least not in the winter. That's a mid-year trade you make after he comes back and proves himself.

But - if you sign Tex, how does Lowell get enough playing time to prove himself? Chances are - he doesn't. So that's a problem.

A bigger issue is what MESSAGE the Sox are sending to the rest of the club by dumping a player who has shown his grit and his loyalty by turning down better offers to stay in Boston? I think the Sox are aware that this is a message they do not want to send.

So you sign Tex, but you do NOT trade Lowell. The Sox will find a way to platoon Youk, Lowell, and Tex - the same way they found a way to platoon Coco and Ellsbury last year. It's a long season, Lowell's coming off an injury anyway, and no one can or should play every single game. (One guy who clearly cannot play every game anymore is Ortiz, which means the Sox could use Lowell or Youk as DH from time to time. That's just one of several ways to get Youk, Lowell and Tex in the lineup.) It'll work out, and if anyone can handle that aspect of the game, it's Francona.

  1. 1-Texiera 2- Pedroia 3-Youk SS- Lowrie

Pretty damn good looking infield, if you ask me. Solid defensively and all can hit it. Come on, Tex....ink the deal and let's move on.

I do agree that it will suck to have to push out Lowell, but he's struggling with his health and with the Yankees getting better in the off-season, it's time to keep pace and move on.

  1. "The Dodgers should have ticked him off and picked up his option year, then they could see what a model player he isn't."

A condition of authorizing the trade was a contractual obligation to waive option years. If the Dodgers picked up his option, the players union would be crawling up their backsides for breach of contract.

"Never did it with Texas, not with the Braves (when they thot he was their missing piece), and with the Angels he fell onto a team that was already 15 games up, then they bowed out in the first round."

I'm sorry, but no one player can carry an entire team on their back. Even Manny, in his first season with the Sox, was unable to get them into the playoffs while working with the likes of Pedro Martinez, David Cone and Nomar in his prime. Babe freakin' Ruth couldn't have brought the Braves or the Rangers in their current state to the playoffs. Hell, the Sox had a losing record in some of Williams' best seasons. They were a sub .500 team for the first six seasons of Yaz's career.

    It's a team effort.
