Angels out of Teixeira hunt?

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff December 21, 2008 07:33 PM

If we can take today's latest development at face value, it appears the Angels have dropped out of the hunt for free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.

The Angels confirmed to the Globe an earlier report by Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the team has withdrawn its offer to Teixeira.

"We have indeed withdrawn our offer and ceased negotiations," Angels spokesman Tim Mead said in an e-mail.

The news is reminiscent of Red Sox owner John Henry's proclamation late Thursday night that Boston was "not going to be a factor" for Teixeira after hearing other offers. However, an unnamed source close to the talks reportedly told Rosenthal that the Angels' decision is more final than Boston's.

Angels GM Tony Reagins confirmed last week the club had an eight-year deal on the table for Teixeira, speculated to be worth around $160 million.

Unnamed sources close to the process told Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown that Angels owner Arte Moreno thought Teixeira had no intention of returning to the Angels and that his team was being used to drive up the price.

The Nationals, Orioles, and Red Sox have made offers to Teixeira, and the Yankees could be in the hunt as well, depending on who you believe. Despite Henry's declaration, the Red Sox are still considered to be very much in the hunt.

So where do the Red Sox currently stand? Team officials remained mum today, leaving their official stance on Teixeira unchanged since owner Henry's declaration.

An unnamed source told Brown the Red Sox have not spoken to agent Scott Boras since Thursday night.

The Globe's Adam Kilgore contributed to this report.

  1. With all this waiting around to squeeze the very last penny out of some organization, I say forget about Teixeira. He's working for the greediest agent in pro sports, and both seem to recognize that this country's in a deep recession. Hold firm to your current offer, Mr. Henry. If the Yankees get him, so what. Stick to your convictions, your principles. What you've put on the table is more than fair (in fact, I think he's being offered too much).

  1. The Red Sox better not drop the ball and let the Yanks get Teix. We need Teix. Papi and Lowell are question marks for next year. As of now, the 2009 Red Sox are a year older and no improvements have been made so far after falling short last year. John Henry did not have to go public regarding the negotiations. Now Boras may stick it to the Sox by not letting them make a counter bid to a Yanks bid (if they bid). The Sox better compete with the Yanks for Teix.

  1. Good. $160 mil is too d*mn much for any first baseman whose name is not Albert Pujols. The market for free agents could use some deflation.

  1. It'll come down to the money....if Teixeira is serious about winning like he says he is...he'll take 10 million less to come to Boston.....assuming the Nats or O's offer the 195 million deal he wants....(and hopefully the Yanks stay on the sideline)

  1. Let Tex go. We (the Angels) didn't win it with him. Go get Manny! The Angels will not only get a great player, but they will make the Dodgers look bad...and I can't stand the Dodgers!
    GO Angels!

  1. not before christmas because boras is trying to pull the yanks in. since the yanks are atleast showing interest i guarantee boras does not let Teixeira sign before they make a formal bid.

  1. Nice to see that Boras is getting his. Hope Manny gets the same treatment.

Tooo bad, because Tex anbd 'Tek are good guys, but boy, what a toxic agent. I wonder if Boras gets fired by someone to re-start a deal if Boras gets in the player's way.

  1. As much as I hate admit it, this has 'Yankees sign Teixeira' written all over it. It is eerily similar to December of 03 when it looked like the Red Sox would sign A-Rod.......The deal fell apart and then on Valentine's Day 04, the Yankees swooped in and showed the love for Rodriguez. The silver lining for all of us is that all we have to do is look how well that turned out for both A-Rod and the Yankees.

  1. And it's down to Boston or the bucks. What's Boras gonna do now, tell Theo that the Pirates, Royals and Brewers have suddenly emerged as suitors with the money and the means to make Tex's World Series dreams come true?
Tex is gonna make out fine, but Boras is gonna be lookin' at some real unhappy clients as he watches their tail lights fade into the distance the way he's overplayed his hand and misjudged the market here. Assuming, of course, he's still around to watch anything.
His name won't be mud around the Texeira/Ramirez/Varitek Family tables this Holiday Season, it'll be Madoff.

  1. I'm starting to dislike him period. Boston is a great place to play baseball i fyour passionate about the sport. I respect players that desire to make good money but also want to play somewhere that actually cares about the sport and their team. Trying to squeeze an extra dollar out of every team speaks of character. So far I am seeing the Asante Samuel of baseball. Surprised he doesn't have a "Pay Me" tattoo on his arm.

Posted by Steve Girard December 21, 08 09:40 PM
  1. he's good but NOWHERE near worth the price someone is going to pay him. crazy given this economy... put a salary cap in baseball so guys like this don't make $25+ mil a year...

  1. We've got more unemployed people in this country, holidays upon us, the Celts, Patriots and Bruins playing well [with players who are not kazillionaires], and this bum dares to scoff at 180 million. Something is seriously wrong with our value system. Move on. Papi and Lowell will be fine. Youk and Pedy can carry a solid offense to compliment our pitching.

  1. with the angels were fighting for Mark Teixeira, the Red Sox is the team to take a clear Teixeira

    Why?

the yankees have already invested enough money in CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, so I do not think we have a better offer than the Red Sox

The Orioles - with Teixeira said that he wants a winning team, good offer, a team on the East Coast. The Orioles is not a winning team, they have no good offer.

The nationals have a good bid but not good location and much less is a winning team

The Red Sox are a winning team, located in the East, also has one of the best deals

So before the end of the year may see a line-up like this:

    - Jacoby Ellsbury
    - Dustin Pedroia
    - David Ortiz
    - Mark Teixeira
    - J.D. Drew
    - Jason Bay
    - Kevin Youkilis
    - Jed Lowrie
    - Jason Varitek, Jarrod Saltamacchia or Kotter

    very good

  1. People are finally starting to learn to deal with Boras-after he called the Yanks to see if they'd be "interested" (as in drive up the price) the Angels knew they were being strung along. Agents can't hold teams hostage forever while they continue to work one club vs. another, and the way against that is to put a time limit on an offer and/or be willing to walk away. Memo to Scott Boras: teams don't NEED any one player to win-if the price is too steep (especially in this economy and even more if they are bidding vs. themselves or offers that don't exist) they will find other players and you and your clients end up losing money if not also integrity.

Mark...Henry, Larry & Theo made a special trip to your house on a private jet and made you a great offer to play for the next 8 years on the East Coast in baseball's most enjoyable place to play with a chance to win a championship every year...what more could you ask for?

I'm hoping Mark will see that his agent may now be losing him money and/or reducing his options, and that he needs to decide soon where he would be happiest rather than where his agent would make the most commission.

  1. Something smells here and I'm sure we will find out soon. Either Borass is playing games or the Yankees are the "mystery" team. Think about it, who else can afford Tex and who else would like to take away the Sox's chance to land Tex. I was very disappointed after Thursday nights results, but at this point it has dragged on and sick of this shit. I believe he's going to New York !

  1. People don't seem to understand the basics...

The Yanks care about winning second and $$ first, like any good business. They care about putting a$$e$ in the seats. Therefore, they need big names in the lineup. Teixeira won't bring anybody to the ballpark. They will sign Manny for 3 years and go for a Pujols trade next year or sign him. He will be a big draw for them.

The Sox only care about keeping a manageable payroll, since they have little hope of any significant change in revenue...unless they bump ticket prices. Winning WS is the only justification for hiking prices. They need to feed from the farm system.

Neither team cares about your love...just your money.

  1. Boras has painted his client into a corner. The FO should give him a graceful way out. If, as reported, the FO has offered 8 years @ $23M, they should offer him 10 years @ $20M and be done with it. The added money payable in years 9 and 10 is small especially if part of the contract can be deferred. After all in the American League Tex, who by all accounts has an admirable work ethic, could end his career with the Red Sox as a DH.

Posted by ret December 21, 08 10:21 PM
  1. Josolo56...you really would rather sign Manny than Texeira? ROTFLMAO I don't know what you do for a living, but I can guarantee you that you won't be working in the front office of a baseball organization anytime soon! Don't quit your day job!

Now to Jack....get off the crack, Jackkk! Did you really just fill out the sox lineup with Youkelis batting 7th? You do realize that he came in 3rd in MVP voting and drove in over 100 runs don't you? LMAO He would shuffle between the 2 and 5 slot, primarily batting 5th behind Ortiz....but against Lefties, Boston would drop Ellsbury to the bottom of the order and have Pedroia lead off, with Youk in the 2 hole.

and to your other post regarding where Boras would make "more commission," the fact is that even if the Nationals or Orioles offered him more money, Boras would stand to make more with Tex playing for a big market team. Endorsemnent dollars would far exceed a 10 million dollar gap over an 8 year contract.

Posted by brady December 21, 08 10:24 PM
  1. Yankees always get Red Sox failures. A-Rod, Damon and now Texeira. Sox need to get Bobby Abreu now.

If they can sleep at night ,after laying off so many workers. They must all have their priorities up their asses. We should all boycott the games. I know I won't be taking my family anytime soon.

Excellent point. Boras also makes money on endorsements his "Impact" agency gets for the players.

  1. Multiple sources mention that Boras has been known to fabricate offers to drive up the price.

Is there not a code of ethics or legal obligation to honesty. How could any team engage in a multimillion dollar contract with a shady used-car salesman. The ramifications to the teams and also to salary arbitration estimates are huge, and i would think the league should have a say in a matter like that.

I liken it to buying a house. Could you really see yourself making a purchase from someone you don't trust. If you make an escalation clause saying you would pay X number of dollars more than the highest bid, do you just take them at their word? or would you look for proof before signing away.

I have trouble believing this can be a negotiation tactic for getting a 200million dollar contract, and if it is I wouldnt blame an owner for collusion.

Not to mention the fact that Boras has two very high-profile hitters on the market and having Tex go anywhere but the Red Sox makes horrible business sense, removing the sox from the equation as well as a potential destination for Manny (if Tex signs with another team that would have pursued Manny).

  1. part of me is really excited at the prospect of teixeira in the lineup, but another part of me thinks that $170-180 million dollars is way too much money for one player. i know the argument is that papi and lowell are aging and we need a young stud to anchor our offense...

so, if we DON'T get tex, what does that look like? could we sign lowe and some lesser players? what about peavy? the sox always have the inside track on padres players because of larry lucchino. now spending $$ on pitching - that would be agreeable, don't you think?

And over. How long have we been reading about this story? Keep buying the papers, keep checking the websites that's what the whole machine wants from us. It's boderline insanity at this point, that people still care. Boston.com has five headlines that when you drill down, say the exact same thing. And these guys are getting paid for this? Where do I send my resume??

  1. There is a big difference when quoting John Henry. He didn't say "we are not going to be a factor,". What he said was "It seems clear that we are not going to be a factor,". The first is a statement of fact which was not given. The second is posturing. The Sox are still in the game for Texeira!

  1. Here's my advise:
    1) Keep the Texiera offer on the table, as is with no further enhancements.
    2) Put an offer on the table for Derek Lowe at a prudent amount (i. e. 3 years, $42 million).
    3) Put an offer on the table for Tek at 1 year $8 million.
    4) If Tex accepts by Christmas, pull the Lowe offer, if he doesn't - pull the Tex offer.
    5) Sign Baldelli as our 4th OF. Unlike most free agents he can play CF. His updated condition will allow him to play more often and he can certainly give Drew or Ellsbury a blow every 3 or 4 days. . He also is insurance in case Papi continues to lose his effectiveness.

  1. The paranoia we have regarding the Yankee's is amusing. If the Yankee's wnat this guy, they will throw more money at him than anyone else, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Do you guys remember the crying everyone did when the Yanks traded for Abreu? Remember how upset everyone was when the Yankee's grabbed Pavano while the Sox were considering him as well? Do I even need to mention the AROD deal? Everyone said, "here we go again, Yankee's sign the players while the Sox sit and watch"....Since all of those transactions have gone through how many WS rings have the Yankee's received? And how many have the Sox had?
Relax, the Sox have a dollar value for this guy, if the asking price goes over that value, they will walk away...and in two years everyone will be saying....."remember when we wanted to sign this guy for 23,000,000 per year, thank God we didnt because we never would have seen _________________insert young prospect name here (Anderson, etc)". Who knows, maybe they trade Bucholtz and another prospect for Prince Fielder or some other young power hitter from a small market, and save money for the next free agent class of pitchers.

  1. It's interesting that the Angels WITHDREW their offer. The Sox did not withdraw, they simply (a) refused to keep bidding the price up, and (b) made public Boras' claim of 'better offers'.

The latter move really ticked Boras off. Wonder why.

Looking at it from the Yanks' POV: If they plan on swooping in with an offer trumping all others, as they did with CC, this would be the time. The Angels are out, the Sox refuse to play, and the O's seem to have the lowest offer on the table. It's the Yankees against the Nationals, and Boras desperately needs that 'better offer' to show the baseball world he's not continually bluffing (i.e., lying).

But Cashman says the Yanks aren't terribly interested in Tex. And Cash knows that, by coming in and trumping all offers, he'd be saving Boras' ass. (Sorry, but it rhymes!) The Sox aren't the Yankees' ONLY enemy - Cashman would really like to stop being 'used' as a bargaining ploy by Boras. The Angels' GM feels the same way, and has already acted accordingly - so, by holding out Boars now has one FEWER suitor for Boras, and a weaker negotiating position. Think Teixeira isn't thinking about how A-Rod had to kick Boras to the curb to get back to the Yankees?

What does this mean? It means all the offers out there are what they are. (except the Angels' offer, which no longer exists.) No one's going to come in at the last minute with an extra $20 million. It's now a just matter of where Tex wants to play, rather than money.

Posted by Mister Snitch December 22, 08 10:34 AM
  1. So,.... things are falling apart for Boras with the Tex. What does he do? He calls Manny and has him float a rumor that he's going to get 75 mil over three years from the skanks hoping to get some movement on the Tex deal. This ploy didn't work, and....in the meantime, the Angels fold their hand on Tex talks and show everyong the cards (160 mil/8 years). Looks like Boras and company are getting played this time around. Tex will sign with Sox for around 170 8 yrs. Manny will go to yanks...3 yrs 60 mil +-.

Posted by Howdizzle December 22, 08 09:32 PM
  1. There are reasons a plenty for Tex to sign with Washington; more money, playing in front of mom and dad, less pressure and the Nats are a team with a bunch of young talent. No, they won't compete for the World Series next year, but, as Tampa has shown, you can get there pretty quickly with the right kind of youth. And unlike Tampa, the Washington owners are billionaires, so if they want to they can spend the money.
