Lowe to keep shopping; Sox not involved
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Derek Lowe is likely to continue shopping for a more desirable offer after the New York Mets presented him with a three-year, $36 million offer on Tuesday.
While some reports have placed Lowe's target in the range of five years and $90 million, a much more probable outcome is that Lowe ends up with a three- or four-year deal worth in the rage of $14-$15 million annually. It was unclear whether the Mets' proposal included any type of option, but the sides last week were dicsussing a pair of proposals, one being a four-year offer and the other being a three-year proposal with a vesting option.
Part of the reason the Mets may have entered the bidding with a relatively conservative offer is because they believe Lowe has no other suitors in the Northeast, where the pitcher has expressed a desire to pitch. The Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies had only preliminary conversations with Lowe and none of those clubs is believed to be interested in the pitcher at this time.
Lowe just came off a four-year, $36 million deal (an average of $9 million per season) with the Los Angeles Dodgers. While he is stylistically much different than right-hander A.J. Burnett - that is to say that Lowe is not nearly as dominating on his best day - Lowe has been far more durable and consistent that Burnett. Lowe, 35, is also older than Burnett, who will turn 32 on Saturday.
Earlier this offseason, Burnett agreed to a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Yankees that will pay him an average of $16.5 million per season.

He has a rubber arm (for now) and he's done okay when medicated. I'm pretty sure he'll end up on a National League staff for his last hurrah.
i think its obvious that the sox arent gonna draft A or B type free agents. i also think penny will outperform at least burnett seeing as penny has incentives to do so while burnett only pitches full seasons on contract yrs.
i think the sox will be better than 2008 but not as good as 2007 if they remain healthy. reason i dont think theyll be as good as 2007 is due to age of players like lowell and ortiz which means a natural decline in skills. still a world series is within reach we just wont be able to destroy opponents in the post season like we did in 2007.
Derek Lowe would be smart to take that offer presented by the Mets since I don't expect another other suitors to go much higher than that.
Gee, one might guess that Lowe and Burnett are recent 20-game winners who were close to wining a Cy- go figure!
Hey, we've all been discounted . Too bad it wasn't for $12m a year!
SIGN HIM NOW!!!!!!!!!!. Great pitcher, has proved he can win big games, and can handle the pressure in BOSTON. Pitching and defense win WORLD SERIES!!!!!. D-Lowe is a great sinkerball pitcher, with Lowell, Pedroia, Youkilis, and whoever plays short,(which I hope is Lowrie), not much getting through that infield... .........
Lowe's asking price is way to high. When will it ever end in the salary game in sports? We are in a recession aren't we? Is basball in another world?? There needs to be a salary cap so teams like the Yankees can't spend what they spend.
If the Sox can get him at a hometown discount...and he's stated such...why not pick him up? We have the infield that can handle his induced grounders
It is a terrible mistake that the Sox fail to make a pitch for Lowe...they need pitching and defense in light of the Yankee largesse...he offers both....the ownership is acting like wing-nits in this instance and Theo is not telling them the straight scoop...let by-gones be by gones and sign this guy!
I'm torn between an inherent level of respect for the baseball knowledge of Theo Epstein and his team and the lesson we have learned time and time again, that you can never have too much pitching. We learned that lesson hard a few seasons ago when we were so convinced we had a surplus of pitching that we traded away Bronson Arroyo. By the end of that season, we were signing other teams' cast-offs because we didn't have a legitimate five-man rotation, due to injuries.
So I think the Sox would be wise to look at DLowe....I always liked him when he pitched here before, and I'll bet his level of production would increase if he came back to Boston.
"the sides last week were dicsussing a pair of proposals,"
They better be careful with that, the outcome might be surprising.....
Henry Spend some money already you have the highest prices in Mlb we deserve a better showing in the off season than you have given us.
why am i reading this on new years??? Ughhh
the sox have money to spend, obviously, with no texiera to pay, so, why the heck not??!!??
Who in their right mind would want to deal w/a Boras client? This parasite, who brings nothing to the table, has never hit or thrown a ball, and lives off of the work of others has made himself (w/the help of talking heads like Ken Rosenthal) bigger than the game. If any of the General managers in MLB had any guts, they'd look back and see how Vince Lombardi dealt w/parasites (see Jim Ringo).
D-Lowe will be pitching for the Yankees in '09. 100% chance.
sox should pusue lowe
How can these guys (Many and Lowe) and their agent (Borass) not realize that this year's free agent market was going to be substantially different to prior years? 1st the economy is down; 2nd there is a glut of starters and corner outfielders; 3rd only a few teams would be buyers. Given all that, it was paramount to ink deals fast. Now, these 2 will have to sign for a lot less than expected and they are the only ones to blame (and their agent). Lowe should have moved fast with the Yanks or the Sox and he just waited around for CC and Many the same with the Yanks/Angels/Dodgers. Many never made a counteroffer to the Dodgers! Now there is a limited market for both (Lowe-Mets and Many-Dodgers) and they still want to wait and continue dragging their feet waiting for a suitor to appear! Can't these 3 (Many, Lowe and Borass) accept reality?
who cares ,these players think they should get so much money is getting pretty sicking.
the redsox should offer the same he will take it to be back in Boston
the sox should offer the same and he will take it to play in boston
At least some of these players are getting a dose of WAKE UP with their contacts welcome to the club d bag
That's good that the Sox don't want Lowe. I think he would probably do OK to good, but others are available that would be comparable. Save some money. Trading several prospects for Peavy is the move that makes most sense along with a contract to Smoltz like they just did with Penny. Load up with pitching. We have a very acceptable line-up. If our pitchers are not well, it doesn't matter what Lowell does or what Tex would of done.
I still like Lowe. If the Sox can think outside the box, Trade Ellsbury and Yes Baucholtz for Hanley Ramirez (you are getting a 24 year old superstar 30/30 man) I love Ellsbury but can he hit 25/30 homeruns? Good defense but if the Sox can make this trade (you can also sign Baldelli) as a second outfielder. Put Drew in center. Sign Adam Dunn. Another free agent (RF). Sox would greatly improve their offense and still keep Michael Bowden. You`d have bats of Pedroia, Youkilis, Ramirez, Bay, Lowell (platoon with Lowrie) Dunn, Ortiz, (Varitek - sign him cheap) and Drew, with Baldelli coming off your bench. Remember, Dunn is a free agent and before Sox fans think I`m crazy, you are getting Hanley back (who is signed) and only 24....This deal makes sense and the Marlins want to do this. Your rotation is set and so is your bull pen and look at the offense......Again, love Ellsbury but love Hanley more...Baucholz is the risk but I`d take that chance...
Red Sox fans will be eternally happy with Lowe's performance in the post season in 2004.
He's not worth that much, he should grab what he can get. I hope the Red Sox aren't involved.
I would have preferred the sox going after lowe rather then signing penny. Lowe has been durable, penny is a huge question (with huge upside). If the sox are truly going through with the 'defense/pitching' mentality after losing out on teix. why not pay for pitching? Actually signing Lowe even after Penny would be fine with me. Also if they are really going pitching/defense Lowrie doesn't seem to fit that mold, Lowrie is not a good defensive SS. I guess I'm just baffled by this off season.
I would take a chance on Lowe and put Wakefield in the pen , I think it would make our staff one of the best,, If not then I would move matterson in the starting role,. We will need a strong staff if we dont get another top hitter
Braves need him, and I think they'll offer him 4 years at $15 mm. I'll be shocked if they don't.
Maybe Lowe could sign his "Zito" contract with the same team as Manny is on along with Tek's "Posada" like contract
Pitching and Defense wins Championships...Sign Lowe!
What other team is going to give him more then 12 mil per the NYM offered 3 yrs plus a vesting excellent offer I think in stead of a salary cap they should just ban Scott Boras, all these crazy contracts are made by him
lowe is not worth the money, if the sox get him they are fools
Good! I hope they are not going after him.
I like Derek Lowe as much as the next guy, but he's not worth $14-15 million per season, durable or not. In my opinion, the $13 million a season from the Mets is even too much.
Lowe may not be as "dominating" as Burnett when he's at his best, but Lowe is almost a lock for 200 innings. When his sinker is on, he's going to get lots of outs, he just needs a solid defense behind him. Honestly, I'd take consistency over "dominance." Lowe > Burnett.
5 yrs/$90M? What has Lowe/Bora$ been smoking? He should take the Mets offer--he's not going to do better.
shelley
I think Derek Lowe would be a great fit for our rotation, he's well liked lots of guys know him already so for him to come to boston would be a no brainer
Why in the world would the Sox not be interested in Lowe at the kind of 3-4 year, $14 Mil deal he'll likely end up with? Just because they're signing Brad Penny? You can never have enough arms, Lowe has publicly stated he's love to come back to Boston...and since the Sox are clearly forced into winning on pitching and defense in '09, the 2 sides seem made for each other. There's a big "why?" missing in response to the headline of this story. Please to explain.
I guess Minaya didn't offer to pick up Lowe's bar tabs and help with his attorney's costs that must be through the roof thanks to his screwing around with most of LA's most eligible bimbos. Cost you a marriage, eh Derek? Maybe you can get your head our of your ass and concentrate on pitching.
He's a good "B" level pitcher but he ain't worth 5 years and 90 mil; he's a freaking moron for refusing the Mets offer. And to think he's missing a chance to rejoin another disaffected, sour-grapes punk like PedroMart. What a jackass.
Next story, please.............
I don't think it's vital to sign Derek Lowe, but he would provide a different look for the Sox rotation. Also, he proved he can thrive in Boston, and win a World Series game. He was also a fine closer, to boot. The Sox could do far worse than signing Lowe. If Brad Penny is healthy and effective, they don't need Derek. But that's a big if with a pitcher. Lowe has maintained his health throughout his career and is very dependable. I don't know specifically what the Sox have against him, but if they'd sign a pitcher who once said he'd like to see Fenway "blown up," why not consider one of the heroes of our first World Series Championship since 1918?
What is Theo thinking, he can't be thinking if he's willing to let DLowe sign somewhere else. DLowe's off field problems were well documented in Feeding The Monster, however DLowe himslef has said he has changed his ways. He would be a great signing for us. One of the best big game pitchers in the game!
what is the problem? We could USE Lowe - let's sign him!
Collusion! No client of Scott Boros can possibly make under $15 mil/year with a term under 5 years!! It's just not fair! If Boros isn't making money, there must be something wrong with baseball!!
Obama--DO SOMETHING!! Bail out Scott Boros!
How about Montero/Byrnes trade with Arizona. We could probably get them cheap as they want to dump Byrnes salary. I know Byrnes is a scrappy vet, got great speed and would be a nice addition to the outfield if he's recovered from whatever had him miss most of last year. Montero looks like a good, young catcher that can hit. This trade would only make sense if they came cheap, as far as low level prospects from the Sox, but would fill vital needs.
Scott Boras is great at making his clients think they're worth more than they are. Why would an AVERAGE pitcher, like Lowe think he's worth 15+ mil. a year? Go see if you can get a ring from Atlanta guy.
Why not Lowe?
He wants to come back here. We could use him. Send Wake to the open as a spot starter long reliever.
