Red Sox unveil new club logos and uniforms

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff December 11, 2008 08:20 PM

It's still not clear how many new faces will be on the Red Sox roster next season, but we now know what they'll be wearing.

In a marketing-driven event in the midst of the holiday season, the Red Sox Thursday night unveiled new team logos, uniforms, and caps that will make their debut on the field at the start of the 2009 season.

Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee holds up the new secondary
Red Sox COO Mike Dee holds up the new secondary "hanging Sox" logo cap.
There will now be four uniform options – primary and alternate home uniforms, and primary and alternate road uniforms, including a a new gray primary road uniform.

Both the home and road alternate uniforms will now feature new alternate “Hanging Sox” logo hats, replacing the traditional B cap when the alternate jerseys are worn.

According to the team, inspiration for the uniform changes started during a “turn back the clock” game against the San Diego Padres on June 22, 2007. The Red Sox wore gray road uniforms from the early 1980s, and team ownership and management were taken with the appeal of the traditional look.

Terry Francona, Jim Rice, and Jerry Remy model the Red Sox new primary road uniform
Terry Francona (left), Jim Rice, and Jerry Remy show off the new primary road jersey.

"If you look at the outerwear that we wear on the road, we've pretty much gone to blue as a road color and red as the home color," Red Sox COO Mike Dee said to MLB.com. "This is really an exact continuation of that. We have blue dugout jackets on the road and red dugout jackets at home; blue BP jerseys on the road, red BP jerseys at home. This gives us a blue theme to the road uniform and then a blue alternate top."

According to the press release, the changes, which include the selection of a new primary logo and introduction of new primary road uniforms, "reflect the team's decision to make changes in design that return select visual brand elements and team appearance to the core traditions of the organization."

The “Hanging Sox” logo – which first appeared on a Red Sox uniform in 1931 – will become the team’s new primary logo and used more frequently in the future. The “Circle Sox” logo, in redesigned form, will now serve as a secondary logo along with the red “B”. All three Red Sox logos were streamlined to "reflect uniformity in font and messaging," according to the release. Transition to the use of the new primary logo in signage, collateral, and other materials will occur over the coming months.

"Certainly the 'Hanging Sox' has an iconic value that transcends anything else in our assortment of brands and logos," Dee said of the new logo. "To have it be defined and standing alone is certainly the right thing to do."

With general manager Theo Epstein and most of the club's baseball operation staff wrapping things up in Vegas and heading back to Boston, manager Terry Francona, former players Jim Rice and Jerry Remy served as models along with two of slugger David Ortiz's children, helping create interest at a fashion show to introduce the new jerseys at "Game On," a bar connected to Fenway Park.

"I love 'em," Francona said regarding the road grays. "About two years ago we wore them in interleague play one day, throwback night, I'm a fan."

Their primary gray road uniforms will have blue letters, like ones worn in the early '80s, instead of the red letters on the jerseys the Red Sox wore when they captured World Series titles in 2004 and '07. These “retro roadies” will feature the word “BOSTON” in blue lettering across the chest and will include a “Hanging Sox” patch on the left sleeve. The new alternate road uniform will feature a blue jersey with “BOSTON” in red lettering across the chest to go with gray pants.

Reliever Manny Delcarmen wore the alternate road jersey, which will have blue tops, with red lettering. The "Hanging Sox" will be on the left sleeves of both as well as on the alternate road hats. No changes have been made to the primary home uniform.

Survey: What do you think of the new jerseys and cap?

  1. Another marketing ploy. Just leave well enough alone.

  1. So now there's four different Sox jerseys and an alternate hat? Sounds like a good way to sell more merchandise.

  1. Thanks a lot, San Diego.

The new road uniforms are hideous. Blue-on-gray was bland in the 80s and it still is.

The team won two World Series very recently with red-lettered jerseys. Yeah, good thing they got rid of those.

Just in time for Christmas! Puke.

  1. The "hanging sox" logo is dumb

  1. Brilliant. Pop open a New Coke and enjoy! Always hated the 80s road uniforms, which look like black on gray, like a funeral or something. And the older, paler socks logos always looked amateur-league. Finally we're successful. So let's take one of the #1 brand identities in sports and change it, hoping to sell more souvenirs. Huge mistake.

  1. Why? Why?.. WHY? So so horrid. Tradition, out the window.. real nice.

  1. Ugly as hell. Hope they get rid of it. Keep the "B" on the hat, and ge rid of the black on gray.

What the hell were they thinking?

  1. Those don't look half bad. And I say that as a Yankees fan.
I'll like them better as long as the Red Sox are losing to my Yankees.

  1. The Red Sox won their last two World Series championships on the road in the old, classic road uniforms. Why get rid of them after all of the success you recently had in them?

Posted by Greg December 11, 08 10:12 PM
  1. Great to see the old school road uni's. "BOSTON" on the away jersey was always a perfect "in you face" statement. The only problem I see is with the alternate cap. NEVER, EVER, EVER change the cap!!!! The traditional "B" is as recognized around the world as the NY. Changing that makes the team look like chumps, not champions. Big John, burn your "Good Morning Baltimore" CD'!!!

  1. Hate the new road greys as well...agree that the 80's road uniforms were awful. I've always liked the red on grey road uniform better than the home whites and think the sox have about the classiest road jerseys in all of baseball. Have also never liked the red home jersey either...to me the blue on red just doesn't work (white on red looks better). The blue road jerseys look okay though.

  1. I don't know what to think.....my prob is with the "new circle" sox secondary logo, which was primary logo, now hanging Sox alone are now primary logo..the new circle secondary logo looks like the Pawtucket Red Sox....I am so confused...help me, somebody please.....I hate to say folks, the only club not to freak out and change what is traditon, dare I say, the NYY.........oh my god

    Posted by redsox1975 December 11, 08 10:21 PM
  1. If you hate the uniforms, let the team know.

Go to redsox.com, click Help/Contact Us at the bottom of the page, then click "Other" on the next page, then type a short polite note asking the team to reconsider. Appeal to the recent history: nobody wanted the jersey worn for two World Championships to go away!

  1. Hilarious. Tradition my behind. What tradition is reflected by alternate uniforms? The silly font they use should be eliminated altogether on the road unis. The 80s unis reflected the traditional road look. Sorry people, if you want to see what tradition means, you have to look to the team wearing the pinstripes.

Posted by Bill December 11, 08 10:25 PM
  1. Holy crap, this sucks. I was hoping it was some kind of prank. Are you kidding me? Please be kidding me. Can we vote on this? Go back to the hideous look of the 80s? Yeah, GREAT idea. Let's look like we did on Game 6 in 1986. Get rid of that stuff we wore in while winning 2 world series. The heck with Beckett and Lowell, I wanna dress like Stanley and Gedman! The "Boston" on the hanging sock logo is so weak. Once again greed trumps common sense.

Posted by Dis Gusted December 11, 08 10:26 PM
  1. I like the new away jerseys, mostly because the blue is insanely dark. If it were blue and grey like the illustration, it woulda sucked. But I like the dark blue and lighter grey. Nothin but a "B" should EVER be on the front of a Red Sox hat. HATE the hanging sox hat. Don't like the alternate away jersey either. That might just be the fact that Delcarmen is lookin a little bit more like a member of Green Day than the Boston Red Sox.

  1. blue-on-grey uniform reminded me of the yankees at first glance :(

  1. I haven't used a lame phrase like this in a long time, but WHO CARES?! All they are doing is trying to stimulate merch sales in a down economy. The hanging sox cap is fine, but I think they would make more sense being the home cap. The B logo will always sell. If you are trying to sell a new cap why wouldn't you put it in front of as many people as possible? Think about it. Hangin Sox logo in front of 80-100 home game crowds on NESN and in every newspaper in NE. Fans are more likely to watch when the team in is on the east coast, and at home they are always on the East Coast. The B makes more sense as a road cap, as the B represents Boston. In Boston everybody knows their the Red Sox. And unless I am wrong I do believe the hangin sox were the home logo for a season or two - many decades ago. But really it doesn't matter, because in the end the players are going to wear the caps and uniforms that they feel most comfortable playing in.

Posted by Johnny BigLeagues December 11, 08 10:32 PM
  1. Tradition? Hilarious. Google "NY Yankees new uniforms" and see what comes up.

Posted by Bill December 11, 08 10:32 PM
  1. The alternate road uniform is freakin' hideous: gray pants, navy top and "hanging Sox" logo hat instead of "Boston 'B'" logo hat. Ridiculous. The new hat is probably the worst part of the whole thing, incredibly bush league-looking.

They should have kept the home, road, and alternate home uni's the same. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.) As for the addition of an alternate road uniform, they should have simply run with the throwbacks as the alternates; no need for the navy tops or the "hanging Sox" hat.

Lastly, the justification is complete b.s.: a "road theme" and a "home theme", blue and red respectively. Last I checked, we're not the Blue Sox when we go on the road.

    PLAYERS DO!

  1. If they left the hat alone it would be fine! Definately prefer the "traditional" hat.

Posted by Dan December 11, 08 10:49 PM
  1. i don't like the changes but they have to raise revenue to compete with the yankees so that the way it is..

Posted by doctordoug December 11, 08 10:52 PM
  1. Holy crap, we've turned into every team in the world.

WE DON'T NEED ALTERNATES! The "B" on the hat is a classic look, and the old away grays looked just fine to me. And speaking of greys, there should only be TWO UNIFORMS: white homes and away greys.

Pretty soon, only the Yankees are gonna have the only classic, respectable jerseys. You don't see them trotting out "new" and "exciting" alternates every two years. Next thing you know, we're going to have sleeveless vests or we'll be wearing batting practice jerseys in games, or camouflage nights, or black will all of sudden be the new primary uniform color!

May I cite the Mets as a team that has a great normal home and away set that over the years added WAAAAAAY too many others and now are a uniform joke? Please, let's never strive to be like the Mets.

Just another shameless money making scheme by the owners who don't understand anything but the $$$, history be damned.

  1. To Johnny BigLeagues

man you hit the nail on the head your post is one of the most interesting and one of the best answers to this new issue with the uniform. Also the third Alternative jersey(the red one) what happen that they didn't added a matching hat. Also the Road grey they need to add a red outline to the blue lettering.

Posted by diehard December 11, 08 11:20 PM

If they REALLY wanted to generate more revenue by making a change, they should have had, for example, 3 different designs then let the fans vote on it. I'm not against change, I'm against ugly.

  1. The new log is not as good as the circle, the 'hanging sox' on the hats is hideous, absolutely awful. I hope all Red Sox players boycott the hats. The Yankees fans like them 'cus they're ugly. Worst decision ever. The Sox will probably loose again - why because all the fans think it will.

Posted by Brettman December 12, 08 12:14 AM
  1. Why are we copying the Yankees color scheme for the road uniforms? The grey and red unis were classy. And leave the dangling hosiery for the "fashion caps." Do the Red Sox realize that these changes make a lot of tattoos in the area suddenly dated?

Posted by aldomen December 12, 08 01:29 AM
  1. I concur with several of the readers. I love the new uni's, but I firmly believe that the intro was done in extreme bad faith in these economic times. The hats run at least $30 per and the jerseys? Let's not get going on that one. So as Bob Kraft so aptly says 'Fans of New England!' many will be in line at the local Modell's like the pied piper called them, looking for their new Red Sox gear. How else are they going to pay for Texiera?

Posted by Philmatic December 12, 08 01:55 AM
  1. Embarrasingly horrible new hats; new logo is unnecessary and unwanted. Unis are "eh".

Posted by Scott December 12, 08 01:55 AM
  1. the new away jerseys are nice. theyre very classic. i had no problems with the old ones but these are really not much different. HOWEVER, the alternate hats with the "hanging sox" are hideous and should never be worn. theres nothing like the classic B hats. almost as identifiable as the NYY hat.

Posted by jim December 12, 08 02:18 AM
  1. This is just plain stupid. Was this the only way they could get Tito in a uniform jersey? Since when do the Sox need on field gimmicks to sell merchandise? Send this crap to the fan shop and leave the uniforms alone.

Are they going to start broadcasting games on Bravo instead of NESN? Let's focus on signing Texiera and a catcher, not Tommy Hilfiger.......
PS - The throwback road uniforms remind me of Buckner and Bob Stanley...... What were they thinking?

I'm thoroughly turned off at the lengths they'll go to make some extra coin. Thanks for being sensitive about the current economic climate.

Posted by agentpinckney December 12, 08 06:52 AM
  1. As above: Never, ever change the cap! That cap is really
the tradition of the team's ID. Also, the old "red and blue circle "is more attractive tha just an "all red" circle! Uniforms with "BOSTON" on them are FINE! Changing "tradition" is a VERY difficult sell. People don't like change; neither do I!

Posted by Harry Swicegood December 12, 08 07:28 AM
  1. So let me get this straight... you people don't want the red Sox to generate revenue this year? It is precisely this kind of marketing that has helped Boston keep the coffers full so they can go and sign key free agents. And for you "holier-than-thou" Yankee fans out there, at least the Sox are trying to raise money, they aren't asking that city of Boston for more tax-free bonds.

Posted by The Dali December 12, 08 07:31 AM
  1. And they don't have better things to do?

What's wrong the changes? Let’s start with . . . . Hey, what’s wrong with tradition? Given the crumbling economy, this is certainly a time to forego opulent expenditures; flies in the face of main street financial dilemma.

Posted by Jay Ramsey December 12, 08 07:34 AM
  1. Will the new uniforms make Tek take fewer called strikes at the plate ? If not, it's nothing but another marketing scheme. Screw Tradition. $$$$$$$$$ talks.

  1. TERRIBLE! Hate the new road uniforms!! The grey and red road uniforms were one of the best in baseball. The only change I would have done is make the visor red on the hats. I can live with the blue alternate uniforms. HATE the alternate red uniforms. I do like the hanging sox on the sleeve. But PLEASE get rid of those new road uniforms. Sox won 2 World Series in those red lettered road uniforms!! No need to change........

Posted by soxguy December 12, 08 07:58 AM
  1. It doesn't really matter much, considering they only wear the alternates once every week or two.

    Posted by bsox1 December 12, 08 07:58 AM
  1. You knew this was coming after their "no ticket price increases for existing seats" announcement last month.

I would suggest that the new logo be a hanging dollar sign.

I would also suggest that true fans (i.e. not the pink hat, camo hat, hanging sox hat buying lemmings) give some thought to attending games at their closest minor league baseball facility this year and support them.

Posted by Hoss December 12, 08 08:01 AM
  1. Wow,

I remember the comments people made back in 1990 when the road unis with red lettering were unveiled (mostly on sports talk shows and in news papers). I remember “horrible” was used. “Ugly” was another word. But the most I heard was that the old blue lettering was tradition. (which was true. The blue lettering was NOT an 80’s thing. Up until that time red lettering had only been used before on road unis for a short period in the 70’s) And how the new red lettering was trampling all over it. How they were classic like the Yankees road unis. 18 years later they kinda bring it back and now and people are saying the same thing they did back in 1990.

We New Englanders really hate change don’t we?

Posted by Jeff December 12, 08 08:06 AM
  1. It looks fine to me. They will rarely wear the "alternate" uniforms anyway. As it is, they wear weird uniforms on Sundays, and this will just continue that.

As long as they win the World Series, I don't care.

Keep the home uniform the same, on the road use the Blue Shirt.

  1. Regular uniforms - fine. Alternate uniforms - leave 'em in the lockers And the "hanging socks" cap - whose brilliant idea was that? Nothing says "tradition" like the Boston Red Sox. You don't mess with tradition. Unless there's a pile of money to be made, it seems. Dump this junk and go back to what they had before.

Posted by lostmoose December 12, 08 08:19 AM
  1. The new primary road jersey is great. I've been waiting tfor the Celtics to revert back to the "Boston" road uni for quite some time. Hopefully they will follow the lead.

However, both alternative uniforms and the hanging sox logo are terrible.

    Posted by Tommy D December 12, 08 08:24 AM

  1. I like the new circle logo. It has a nice retro vibe to it. I agree a lot of the smaller market teams have done some truly hideous things with their alternate unis - with the camo being one of the worst examples. These don't bother me too much and they are still very conservative. As for the hanging Sox logo - I think I like it. The image vs. the letter gives you more options for background color. As long as you have that red pair of socks hanging there you know who you are talking about and you're not getting confused with another 'B" town.

Posted by Bostowyo December 12, 08 08:50 AM
  1. If you read the press release on the Red Sox website yesterday, it said that the new road uniforms would "bring back memories of Yaz, Fisk, Rice and Evans". Unfortunately, for most of us, these new funeral type outfits bring back memories of Gary Allenson, Mark Clear, Reid Nichols & Glenn Hoffman.

These are just awful. Hey, here's a great idea...lets drain all of the color out of our uniforms!

The primary road uniforms are HORRIBLE...get rid of them
The alternative road uniforms are so-so...but I can do without (its okay if they wear them once a month or something)

I'm sure you all can worry about more important things than this. I couldn't care less if they were all out there wearing tie-dye shirts and beanie caps as long as they were playing a good game.
As another poster said, jerseys and hats don't win games.

  1. Here's a brilliant idea for those of you who don't like the new look because of "Greed." DON'T BUY THE NEW STUFF! Ownership doesn't make money on something, they're bound to kill it.

And griping about "tradition?" Please. Take a look at the Baseball HOF "Dressed to the Nines" online exhibit. Many Sox uni changes over the years. Or would you rather the good guys still be wearing wool lace-up jerseys? Things change. Get over yourselves.

All that said, the new road jerseys are a nice tip of the cap to the HISTORY of the team, something the ownership has been keen on since taking over. I've not liked the red jerseys on the players (though I own a replica), and I probably won't like the blue jerseys, either. I hope the hanging socks logo on the hats is a one year experiment, though as a fan, I'd certainly buy (and wear!) one. The Good Guys should have the stylized "B". It's a classic.

Posted by Craig December 12, 08 09:47 AM
  1. The uniforms are hideous! They don't look anything like the 80's road uniforms, which were among the dullest in baseball to begin with. The script they are using for "Boston" reminds me of those horrible White Sox (softball type) uniforms from the 70's. The road uniforms they had were classic, among the best in baseball (and highly recognizable). This just smacks of a merchandising ploy. Not happy at all. I have no idea what they were thinking about here (other than $).

Posted by Jeffrey Weeks December 12, 08 09:48 AM
  1. Gary Allenson, Mark Clear, Reid Nichols & Glenn Hoffman should have been modeling these uniforms. Just HORRIBLE (especially the primary road uniforms).

The good news is, I was going to buy a new color TV to watch the Sox this year...but after seeing these uniforms, a black & white tv set should be fine.

  1. The possibilities here are endless. For instance, if the organization takes a downturn and stinks for a few years, the hanging logo could have holes in the socks. Green could be employed more often to convey how the pitching makes one want to vomit. Gray is appropriate for Red Sox teams at .500 because it neither suggests strength nor complete disaster…It just says mediocre…middle of the pack…wait ‘til next year. But for this moment in time, the logo should just say: BO$TON

  1. I like the gray roadies; never got into the red lettering on the roads. I'm into simplicity/tradition in a road uniform. I'm so-so on the blue roadies. The new/alternate cap is awful; just a cheap marketing ploy. The Cardinals (another old-time team) did similar with the caps, and theirs look lousy. Best cap logos in baseball are (in no particular) order are Tigers, Yankees, and Red Sox; why mess with greatness? I'm OK on the tweaked logo; maintains tradition and class. LOVE the Bruins third jersey; OK with Celtics "alternate" road gear. Now, let's bring back Pat Patriot!!!

And the folks who point out that it's ridiculous to change the uniforms now associated with winning two titles (the ones they were wearing during each clinching game no less) are absolutely right. I'll be writing to the team asking them to go back to what they had because they were classic. The only reason to change them is to sell more jerseys, but I'll be requesting last year's model. How long until those are "vintage" and we'll go back? Jeez!

    Posted by Scott M. December 12, 08 10:50 AM

I know, San Diego looks cool and since we don't have a shred of original thought anyway-why not. I LOVE the 80's look too. I mean, I was beginning to miss those loosing days- So nostalgic. And the new anemic circle- says winner, doesn’t it? The loss of color, loss of character the pure looser pride it conveys. Last. Hanging Sox- Hanging is such an upbeat concept. I guess we are lucky, It could have been "Flying Sox!! Greed Masters- too bad. You really missed the mark with this.

Posted by Matt December 12, 08 10:52 AM
  1. simply obnoxious. don't try to say this was done for any reason other than to make money, a new way to get people to buy more jerseys and more hats. The Red Sox have shown an ability to squeeze every last cent they can out this team, and this is just another example (shocking really that it was introduced a few weeks before Christmas).

  1. Its a ploy to raise more revenue targeted toward their die-hard "man-child" fans that will buy into this gimmick and adorn their closets with even more costly jerseys. They've exhausted all other means in raising $$$$$$. They are not raising ticket prices (first time ever) or putting in new luxury seats or raising the price of beer. 1. The Red Sox 1980s road uniforms were the worst and the new road uniforms are too similar. If the team was going for a retro look, and by retro you mean dull and bland, then mission accomplished. Changing the logo seems pointless, they just changed the typeface and color. I guess since the club didn't raise the price of the tickets this year, they needed another way to separate a fan from his money. Just a pre-Christmas cash grab.

  1. These comments are hilarious. Talk about change-averse! What's next, take the lights out of Fenway because they weren't there in 1918?

The changes look great. The 80's-vintage road unis were klunky because of the block letters. The new ones use the same font that's used on the home jerseys - big improvement. It doesn't look like a Yankees jersey, by the way - the big BOSTON on the front of it is a good tip-off on that. So is the logo on the sleeve.

The increased use of the hanging sox logo on the cap demonstrates the power of the brand. To those who don't like it, then buy a cap with a B instead and hush. And for those Yankee-look-alike paranoids, please note that the Yankees don't have a design-only cap logo. Feel better?

It is Marketing 101 that you don't mess with an established brand that sells. So why Red Sox are you doing this??? If we are going to change the uniform, why don't we just build a new ball park that can seat 65,000 people for they can allow more fans to have a great chance to get to a game without having to pay the earth for a ticket. We might even be able to put in wider seating since most americans are a bit larger than the fans of the 1920's and 30's.

  1. Visions of October 1986 at Shea came back when I first took a look at the new road design. Too much blue on gray. And the hanging sox on the cap is HORRIBLE. Hopefully it will go away quickly like the white cap that came out in the early-mid 90s. If the club is committed to the design they should consider adding red trim to the blue road Old English lettering similar to the road jerseys in the early 70s. But overall -- thumbs way down!

  1. WOW. You people are amazing. You are all writing as though your old jerseys and hats won't be wearable any longer! Who cares?! Honestly!? The Sox haven't REMOVED the "B" from the hats... they haven't changed the name of the team to the Yawkee Way Hushpuppies. They simple ADDED to the existing brand. Don't worry, people will still know you are a Red Sox fan if you walk down the road in your "B" hat and 1995 Garces jersey.

And, when did the uniforms say "New England" anyway? That was a stupid post.

Of course, the downside is that I wouldn't sign with a team that changes their uniforms and logos every few years. That is the real reason I signed with the Yankees.

Posted by CC Sabathia December 12, 08 11:20 AM
  1. It's hilarious how they cite "tradition" for some of these changes (fonts, new road grays), and then spit in the face of it with others (FOUR different uniforms, "hanging socks" cap). Guess what -- if you did something one way for 20 years, then changed and did it a second way for the next 90 years, THE TRADITIONAL WAY IS THE SECOND ONE. Worthless, dishonest marketing drivel. The Red Sox were also known as the Boston Americans for a brief period 100 years ago before being known as the Sox -- I guess we should change the name too? Anyway, all these different doll outfits show that the team doesn't understand the unique status of the Red Sox brand. They could be the Yankees but they act like the Diamondbacks or Mets or something. Sad. Those batting-practice colored jerseys look like little league unis, and that hanging socks cap (with the cute widdle red button on top!)... I don't even want to talk about that thing.

  1. They should take "BOSTON" off the front and the logo off the sleeves, then take the name & number off the back. There you go...pajamas. The primary road ones are AWFUL.

If they wanted to go "Retro" as they are saying...they should have gone with the v-neck pullover from the '75-'78 era and the red hats & helmets with blue bill. at least that was a period of winning teams and great Yaz, Fisk, Rice, Evans memories.

This Gary Allenson/Mark Clear era uniform brings back bad memories.

Um, yeah, they're not called the New England Red Sox. Relax. They didn't change the wording at all: Team name on the home jerseys, city name on the road jerseys. That's the way it was, and that's the way it always should be, for every team. (Some teams like NYY and CHC have logos on their home jerseys; that's fine too.)

I also approve of the dark blue lettering on the main road jersey, because that is less flashy than red. Less flashy means it's a more old-school look than before. Good. This is an old-school team.

But this "alternate" business is just crap. First of all, you will never see the Yankees wearing any kind of alternate jersey. I am a die-hard Yankee hater - But I will be the first to admit that the Yankees are way classier in this regard. They look at the big picture, realize their team's look is an iconic one, and refuse to diminish its iconic status by polluting it with garish clown suits. Our own team is just as iconic and we should keep to it. White at home, gray on the road, like Babe Ruth and Teddy Ballgame wore. Blue jerseys? This isn't the Patriots. Red jerseys are even more garish and always have been. Red and blue ought to be accent colors only.

And what on earth is the story with the alternate hat? Why would I ever buy a Sox hat that didn't have a B on it? Why would anyone? The B is the whole reason to wear one. Who is walking into a store, looking at the two different hats, and picking the one WITHOUT the B? That's like taking down a Christmas tree on the 24th. You just wasted the whole point of buying it in the first place.

  1. I'm not a fan of the hanging sox logo being put on a hat and I hope they don't wear their alternate uniforms much for that reason. The Boston "B" is recognizable all over the world, it just doesn't make sense to add another logo (an inferior logo at that) to the team. I'm cool with the primary roads unis, though. For some reason they bring back a nice sense of nostalgia, and I didn't even live in the 80s. Eh, hopefully more money to the team, right?

  1. The new Jerseys are fine, but the new hat logo absolutely sucks. I grew up in Danvers and have been living in Sweden for a number of years. I proudly wear my worn sox cap and because of it have bumped into a number of fellow Americans. Nothing like the beautiful red "B" on a blue background. It's well known, even in movies.

There's no way I'll wear a Sox cap with a goofy looking pair of socks hanging above my eyebrows. It looks like socks hanging at the fire place ready to be stuffed. Who are these morons who are entitled to change a revered logo? leave well enough alone. What's next? Change the team name to the "Boston Cods" ? To go along with the Orioles, Tigers, Panthers, Jaguars, Dolphins, etc.? Changing the logo on the hat is changing something that is classic and making it TOTALLY mediocre. BOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Another scam by the Red Sox to put more money in their greedy pockets. They dont care about the fans just about making money. Highest ticket prices in the league to sit in a outdated stadium. Every team in the league has a new ballpark pretty much, but Red Sox charge you top dollar to sit crammed and uncomfortable in a little ban box. The owners are just riding this Red Sox nation wagon laughing as they take your money.

New hat logo's are alright but I will always wear a B on my hat, that's what I grew up with that's what I'll wear. The "Hanging Sox" look a bit hokey. One last thing, could they add any more red to the circle logo? I liked the blue in it, didn't look so washed out. I dont mind an occasional "turn back the clock" theme, but this is really bad. How can you change perfection? It's been driving me crazy when they wore the alternate Red Jersey's on Sunday (or a double header). The Sox were one of the few teams left who didnt have to resort to the "alternate" jersey and stupid marketing-revenue ploys of this sell out.

It makes NO sense to remove the red from the uniforms. They didn't even use red as an outline trim. It needs red letters & numbers with navy trim and red piping. They won two World Series wearing the previous uniforms- now they go back to the dull navy and gray set......UGH. Oh yeah, they're "traditional" all right- when the Sox were traditionally the losers! 1. All the people whining about the "new" road jerseys that are "eighties" throwbacks and "scream Yankees" should consider some history lessons if they plan to continue being Sox fans.

The Sox have been using road jerseys like this off and on since 1936. All told, over forty years of their history have been played in jerseys like this. They wore navy blue lettering on the road straight through from 1936 to sometime in the sixties. Since they first adopted it, the navy blue text has been on their road uniforms almost twice as long as the red.

The only difference on these from the jerseys they wore from at least 1938 to 1980 is the font style, which they used from 1936 to 1938 in a white road jersey. This is basically a combination of those two.

But hey, go ahead and cry about them going back to a classic and historical uniform style if that's your priority.

  1. "The Boston "B" is recognizable all over the world"

I don't know what part of the world you've been in, but except for Japan and certain areas of central and south america, it most certainly is not.

This story is full of grumpy old new englanders who are adverse to change..who probably still drive the same car and wear the same clothes for the past 30 years. It's also full of ignorant pink hat bandwagon fans.

The Red Sox never were the New England Red Sox and their road jersey always had BOSTON on the front. Who ever wrote that post needs to get their head examined, or is maybe a 2 week old fan.

Colors, logos and uniforms never won championships for any team. This is no different. Maybe you haven't seen the photos of the new unis, but they do NOT look like the Yankees road unis...haven't you noticed it says Boston on the front and there's a pair or huge red hanging sox on the left sleeve? The new circle logo is barely any different than the old one. So what's the problem? NOTHING has changed except for the blue letters on the road jerseys, a very subtle change to the circle logo (barely noticeable), and the ALTERNATE hanging sox logo hat which won't even be used that much.

I don't remember anyone complaining with the green or red alternate uniforms, and green hats, which are hideous. I mean you say gray and blue has nothing to do with the Red Sox...how about GREEN?? haha No complaints then though. So this is ridiculous.

Boston fans complained for so long about not winning, and "whoa is me, we always lose, it's the curse" syndrome and now since you have nothing to complain about because the red sox win...you gripe with THIS??

Get over yourselves. No one is going to make you buy these unis (even though you eventually will) and you're not going to start hating the red sox because of this.

So what's the point of all of this? Just venting during a recession? I understand..

    GO SOX!

Change is the only constant, you can either go with the flow or drown. Seeing as though these new uniforms were inspired by the look used in the 70's and 80's, wouldn't that be MORE traditional than the current uniforms?

I like color and I like change. I think they did a GREAT job! And so what if they want to sell more merchandise. We don't have a new stadium. If you want to keep you beloved Fenway. Have to make it up somewhere. Have to keep up with the Jones' (Yankees) somehow!

When the team switched to what they've worn the last few years it was a shock to me. So it 's a perspective issue. I always liked the classic look of those road unis, but I don't like red jerseys or dark blue for that matter and that goes for the new cap logo. We all know why this is being done and although I don't like most of it, I understand the financial pressure of keeping pace with NY, and now TB.

  1. I'm disappointed in the Red Sox right now. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the uniforms they had. I realize that baseball is a business and success is not only determined by wins and trophies, but also by the bottom line. That being said, why mess with something that isn't broken? I wouldn't have minded a new sleeve patch or something, but to overhaul the entire thing angers me a bit. I suppose I'll get used to it, but it won't be easy. And I refuse to purchase that awful new hat. How about we all refuse to buy any of the new logos so Lucchino is forced into reinstating the old uniforms. This is a tasteless effort to boost revenues and I will not budge.

Remember the 1986 dugout jackets with the fuzzy red socks on the left breast? I still have mine and I love it, but it's TOO MUCH RED. We look like the freaking Anaheim Angels with all this red. They need to keep the current road jersey exactly as it is and make an alternate one in navy blue with red BOSTON letters, red sleeves and a navy B on the sleeve. I've got a home jersey in these colors and it's bad ass. Red should be part of any Sox uniform but never the full uniform. MAN I sound gay right now. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

and this is a bit nitpicky, but the new circle logo doesn't stand out as much as the old one because everything's in red instead of the nice red/blue contrast that you had with the old one. updated font makes sense, but boston and the ball seams should be in blue.

That's not tradition? These ARE the good old days. Keith Foulke leaping off the mound in 2004? Paps urging Tek to jump into his arms in 2007? Both done in a sharp looking uniform that they want to throw away for no good reason. Putting the Sox on the sleeve...no biggie there. But I didn't like the dull blue lettered unis when I was a kid and I still don't like them today.

Partially, yes, but it seems more a bandwagon type of thing that a legitimate age thing. I'm only 24 and I love it, partially because I'm aware of the actual history of the uniforms. Everyone my age I know who's actually followed the Sox since their childhood is pretty into these road jerseys. I'm hoping to snag one for my brother for Christmas.

That said, I do assume older fans will be quicker to recognize this. My father's your age and I'd assume he's well aware of the history of these uniforms, as is my 73 year old grandmother who's been going to Fenway since the hey day of Williams (And was born a scant thirteen months before the first navy blue type Sox jersey's debut, to my knowledge).

It's all terrible, but the hat is an abomination. Why do you need to mess with tradition? And don't give me this "there were hanging sox on the hats in ninteen-dickety-whatever."

It is laughable to suggest that Red Sox fans are "overwhelmingly in favor of the hanging sox as our primary logo" as Mike Dee states in the NESN interview yesterday. When was that referendum?

This is an admitted marketing exercise for the team with no regard for what the fan base wants. For once, we could learn something from our rivals to the south. NYY have held fast to their uniform design over the past century with very few modifications. It is simple, classic, and we'd do well to follow their example in that regard. We have one of the best sets of team logos/images in all of sport. The fact that Larry Luccino and Mike Dee seem ready, willing, and able to whore it out is infuriating and just plain wrong.

Tradition? What tradition, losing? The greatest Red Sox moments were made with the club wearing the modern style with RED (funny that, considering the team has "Red" in its name).

The new/old road uniforms are as bad as Mark Kotsay hitting with runners on base.

  1. Is it just my imagination or does the new road uniform look exactly like the Yankees road uniform except is says Boston instead of New York? Why on earth would we try to emulate the Yankees even further?! I'm OK with some changes, but why eliminate the Red? That is what defines the Red Sox. Not blue. Just another attempt to get more money out of the franchise. So sad that sports have come to this.

  1. I guess the new regime that loved the "retro" look were not around in 1986. So ownership trashed the uniform that represents some of the greatest glory in Sox history (2 World Championships celebrated while wearing those uniforms) for a look that harkens back to some of the worst times in Red Sox history (Game 6 1986 anyone?) I'll take the championship legacy. I also think they screwed up the logo. Nothing wrong with the BOSTON in blue with the red outline. That would have looked better on the new road uniforms. I must admit I hope they wear the blue roadies more. They are not nearly as bland

Either you people didn't read the story or you have no idea what you're talking about! The cap with the sox logo is an ALTERNATE CAP to be worn second game of double headers, day game after night game. It's not an every game cap and will be worn very few times out of the 162 (hopefully more). They will still be wearing the standard B cap for most of the games next season. Secondly, the primary road jersey changed something that was 16 seasons old. I liked the old primary road jersey, and I like the new one. I think it has a classic vibe to it!

Jeez. All these whiners. Everyone's crying marketing ploy, blah, blah, greedy front office, blah, blah, anything for a buck. If you think this "alternate cap" is all they'll do, you are soarly mistaken. It is the first step in the transformation. They are fully aware it would be a disaster, publicity-wise to make a stark change. This is an effort to slowly take Boston off the marketing. Soon Red Sox will adorn the away uniforms as well (give it 3-5 years) Once the B is fully replaced, the Red Sox will not have a hint of BOSTON on its marketing. Ownership is banking on the larger market tofill the pockets of the club where stadium and TV rights are full to marketing capacity!!!

  1. Two thoughts:

    1) A year ago the then lowly Tampa Bay Devil Rays revamped their brand and image - they needed too. Is management saying that our mighty Boston Red Sox are comparably in need of the makeover the Rays received. Like the Rays removing the "Devil" will we just be known at the "Boston ( ) Sox"?

    2) In parading out new uniforms should the Sox take a lesson from the Bruins? Remember the yellow Bear jerseys? Yeah, that worked well.

Bottom line, I agree, don't mess with the cap and bring back the original circle logo and I can live with the rest (grudgingly).

  1. I'm young, but I grew up in a family full of Sox fans. My Nana used to talk about Ted Williams, Bobby Doer, and Rico Petrocelli. Growing up for me, it was Jim Rice, Wade Boggs, and Rocket. The truth is, that all of those guys wore the blue on grey. I'm not opposed to that. And while I do prefer the classic B hat, I'm not bothered by a secondary hat. It's secondary. That means that it will be worn on a few games each season. I will still choose to wear the classic, but if some other people want to spend 25 bucks on the new alternate cap and that money goes to help us field a competitive team, I'm all for it. It's not like we're adding pinstripes, for crying out loud.

  1. Ridiculous.

OK, so the Yanks bought Sabathia and Burnett.

    We bought ugly new uniforms.

Like we needed them? Yes, just another money-grabbing marketing ploy that gives credence to the generally-held low opinion of Red Sox Nation.

  1. The Red Sox are such a traditional brand with such intensely loyal fans, it is not surprising that any change is met with negative reaction. But folks, what are they really changing? These changes are classy extensions of the traditional brand icons. The Sox are carefully maintaining long-established logos and their unique font. The gray road uniforms look terrific -- more "traditional" than the recent ones and an improvement on the old block letters. I have always loved the "hanging Sox" logo -- it is one of the most distinct and instantly recognizable non-letter logos in sports. It looks far better than the Yankees' top hat, the Cardinal perched on the bat, or the cartoon bear face of the Cubs. There is only one way I think they go too far here -- wearing the hanging Sox on the cap for games. Only the B should be on the cap in games. But if they do it rarely, only a few times a year for unique occasions, I can live with it. A Red Sox player wears a B on his cap, and that's just how it is. Sell all the hanging Sox caps you want, just don't wear them on the field in real games.

  1. There have been many changes to the uniforms during my time as a fan (since 1955); those lamenting or even denouncing "the end of tradition" appear to be fans whose idea of "tradition" dates back to 1998. A reminder: anyone who collected Topps cards through the 1950s recalls the goofy batting red sock. Old, discarded logos simply mark particular eras and keep people mildly interested as time passes.. As far as these changes go: frankly, the "two sox" logo is a BIG improvement over the graphically messy two-font Boston Red Sox circular logo (the replacement "round" logo is MUCH cleaner). In addition, going for a standard "RED SOX" script has been long overdue. As for the away jersey, the front of the gray uniform has traditionally been subject to change-- it's the white uniform that says "tradition" (the Red Sox are more like the Tigers in this regard than they are the Yankees, but even the Yankees have "overtweaked" their road uniforms over the years). The new "two sox" cap is no more an aberration than the red hat with a blue B. The blue with the red B remains primary, thank goodness. Finally, I understand the logic of all the red now associated in the color scheme but anyone raised on Frank Malzone, Jimmy Piersall, and Bill Monbouquette knows the undershirts are BLUE, dammit.

  1. The alternate uniforms look like they belong on a minor league team, and the "Boston" in the circle logo looks weak in the Sox font as compared to the old logo. I do love the road grays with the "Boston" in Sox font, though. I always wondered when they had grays before why they had such plain lettering.

  1. I hate the Yankees, but this just proves why they still stand a step above the rest as far as tradition and respectability goes. They have had two uniforms--one home, one road, and it has been that way FOREVER. They have no awful, glowing red alternates, no softball style spring training-ish blue abominations. They only have the yankee uniform. There's a reason that no matter how well the Red Sox perform on the field and no matter how much it pains us Sox fans, the Yankees are still the classier and more respectable organization.

  1. The old "circle sox" logo must remain. The secondary "circle sox" logo I can live with. The hanging sox is so generic it borders on saving money in merchandising by having only white and red in it. As for the new primary road unis, they flat-out look like someone went to the store and they heated the name on with an iron. No outline color? If they wanted to change, just keep what was their current road jersey and flip-flop the red fill with navy fill and change the outline color to red. The alternate road jersey is fine. The alternate hat? No way. Looks cheap.

How often do you find your self sitting in your house going, "Wow, I love the B on the hat, it makes the uniform, it makes the Sox who they are today" It's in a while, its not like they are gonna wear them every night, most of you people writing most likely dont even watch everynight, including the guy up there who said lets sign C.C. Where has he been he's been? Hes been with the yankees now for what 3 days, he posted that yesterday, he's a pink hat. Would you guys rather have the camo jerseys San Deigo has. The grey uniforms is something that everyteam has on the road. The "hanging sox" are fine. It could be a whole lot worse. Lets all stop complaining about the jerseys they will wear once every month. Lets worry about when we are going to sign Mark and bringing back Lowe, not what they will be wearing in a city away from boston I'm 20 years old and can say that they sox are more important to me than they are to most of you, and i dont care about the jerseys as long as i have another world series poster hanging in my room at the end of the season

I understand the decision to do this. But it's our money, shouldn't we have voted on what we would like to see. Don't get me wrong I like the blue jersey. I'm not crazy about the grey road jersey. I never liked it when it was worn during the 80's. But I will never buy the hanging sox hat. Put them on the sleeve of the blue jersey and leave well enough alone. Keep last years road unis and have those be the road primary, the white as the home primary, the red alternate as the home alt and the new road as the road alt. I also like the "Hanging Sox" hat, just not as a hat for the players to wear on the field. Too bad the people in the front office aren't true fans.

The cap with the "B" is awesome and is how most people identify themselves with the Red Sox. 1. Some people are morons basd on this board. A few thoughts:

    1. Uniform changes occur. the Red Sox have had zillions of uniforms over the years. Some awful, some classic. Get over it. The most recent road unis were a change from only a few years back. Ever look at pictures from the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60, 50s, 40s...and so on? Classic depends on what time frame you compare the new ones to!

    2. Hanging Sox? Did you just become a fan? The two dangling sox have been used in some form or another forever. You have been able to buy hats that are almost identical for years at the park or at Twins. Hello? It's not like they just thought it up!

    3. They did not say they would change the hat from the B. That will be worn almost all the time. They may wear the other occasionally. Hello? they have done tweaks like this again for years.

    4. Road unis are supposed to be plain and understated. Grey with blue is just that. It's better than the grey with red of the past years..no question about it.

    5. The red top and the blue. Gee ,...hate to break it to you but tops like that have been around for years in one way or another in BP, at Spring training...go to ANY store that sells red sox stuff and green, blue, red jersey tops are out there...

    6. So ~50% of the time (81 gams at home) the sox will look exactly as we are used to seeing. ~50% of the time (81 on the road) they will have better look. Every once in a while, they may wear a red top at home or a blue one on the road. They've done something like that forever.

If you've been watching the sox for years (as i have) you have seeen almost all of this before. It really is NOTHING NEW.

  1. WHY DOES ANYONE EVEN CARE?

Posted by Ryan December 14, 08 06:08 PM
  1. Holy cow, people, calm down!

    1) Yes, I am sure that the changes are at least partially motivated by money. In that respect, good for management! It's not like these jerseys are something that we, the Red Sox fans, will be forced to buy. If you don't like them, or can't afford them, then don't buy them. If you do, and you can, have your fill! Outrage over out-of-this-world ticket prices (and the inability of regular people to take in a game at Fenway Park) is completely understandable. However, getting this bent out of shape about Red Sox management trying to (heaven forbid!) make more money by creating new merchandise is ridiculous.

    2) This is not the first time the Red Sox have changed their uniforms—far from it. The uniforms that Boston wore while winning their two most recent World Championships were not—I repeat, not—the same uniform the Red Sox have worn for the past hundred years, or so. In fact, it was a relatively new design, one in a very long line of uniform tweaks and changes. However, to read many of these comments, you’d think the Sox had suddenly changed the only uniform they had ever known.

    3) For those of you moaning that management is “spitting in the face of Red Sox tradition”, it’s not as if all Red Sox traditions are something to be proud of. If memory serves me, up until just a few years ago our beloved ball team had the reputation of a mismanaged group of choke artists, ones that found new and exciting ways to lose in spectacular fashion every time they made it to the big dance. We were the last major league team to integrate, too. Would it tickle your fancy if we suddenly canned all players of color? In other words, change is not only good—it’s often great.

    4) Many of you have written something to the effect of “While the Yankees were signing Sabathia and Burnett, we were buying new uniforms!” Uh, yeah, that’s true. While we were finding ways to increase revenue, New York was overspending and signing guys to bloated, irresponsible contracts. Boston was in a position to not have to push the panic button and overpay during the off-season. We missed the World Series by nothing more than a clutch hit, or two. New York, on the other hand, was a desperate team in trouble. The last several years, Theo and the gang have made a habit of not overspending and signing guys to lifetime contracts. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s been working pretty well.

    5) Superstitions are dumb. Someone wrote that if Boston were to start losing, people will blame it on the uniforms. That’s probably true. It’s also true that those people blaming the uniforms would be idiots. Suggesting a major league team didn’t win the World Series because of a uniform change is as asinine as blaming an 86-year championship drought on a mysterious curse brought on by the sale of a player.

    6) Personally, I like the new primary road uniform, and, if I weren’t such a tightwad, I would happily purchase one of the new grays. I fell in love with the Red Sox in 1985, and the new grays remind me of Jim Rice, Wade Boggs, Bruce Hurst, and all the rest. If they only remind some of you of Bob Stanley, well, too bad for you. I agree that the hanging socks logo looks pretty tacky, and I think that Boston should stick to the classic B; I like the idea of one logo unifying a group of disparate athletes from different backgrounds as one. Luckily, based on all the negative feedback, I have a suspicion that the hanging socks cap will never actually see any real game time.

In closing, if in just a few months’ time Beckett is throwing fire, Matsuzaka is still rolling, Jon Lester is an early Cy Young candidate, ‘Tek is still around, Papi is launching bombs, Pedroia is gobbling up grounders, and some new guy named Teixeira is peppering the Green Monster with line drives, all this b.s. will have long subsided and none of you will be complaining. Infielders could wear their briefs on the outside of their uniforms and no one will care as long as the Sox are winning.

  1. I really don't like the new road unis and if I was in the Red Sox front office I would take a piss on Pesky's Poll wearing a Yankees jersey before I messed with the hat, even if it is an alternate that will barely get worn. I actually do like the navy blue with red letters on the alternate road jersey, if they really felt they needed to change them at all I'd rather that be the primary roadies.

  1. its amazing to me how many people have such difficulty reading. a) the hanging sox hat will be worn like 1% of the time, the "B" isnt going anywhere. how do people not get it
    b) a baseball team is a business. it seems like some of you want to keep fenway park, keep old unis without ever changing, not try to make money or merchandise/market the team in any way, but continue to win world series and bring in top talent. HELLO??? welcome to reality???

how about acting like real fans, and getting excited for the season?

  1. If you go to the baseball reference site and look at the history of the uniforms, you will find that the alternative uniforms are not a new concept. They were around 60-70 years ago.

Traditionally, I like the blue. I thought they were going with too much red. Their sleeves used to be blue, and I like that better than the red undersleeves.

  1. Look, Front Office, one of the identifying marks of the Pink Hatter (male variant), is the wearing of a Hanging Sox cap. The true Sons (and Daughters) of Fenway proudly wear the B. It's like taking the pinstripes off the NY Forces of Darkness.

What's next, plastering logos for that unloved racing team on the caps and jerseys? Fie.

Kudos to comment 323. Short, sharp sweet and work in a Beatles reference. A tip o' the Cap (with a B) to you.

  1. What a bunch of drama queens. This ownership group has completely changed the entire franchise for the better. The talent is now strong from top to bottom. Fenway Park is fantastic. Players now WANT to play in Boston. We have a competative, championship driven team every season. This takes $$$, people. HELLO ! These guys know how to turn a buck, and they in turn re-invest it in the club. If the "new look" keeps the money flowing and the team winning, more power to 'em. 2 titles and counting, and yet most comments torpedo this great management team. Some people are never happy.

  1. The new road unis are brutal. We had to deal with those drab things in the 80's! One of the things that makes the red sox unis better than the yankees is the red color! The old road unis with the red letters were great! These new things are lame. As for the hanging socks, they're great inside of the old circle logo. They don't belong on a hat. The hat with just the socks look silly.

  1. The more money the team makes on merchandise, the more money they can spend on talent, ballpark upgrades, events, brand recognition, etc.. The changes are minimal and the windfalls will be huge. It's a good move from people who know more about running a successful business than anyone on this message board.

  1. The hanging sox on a cap is a big issue for me. I think it stinks that they are trying to make changes to a traditional uniform. We have grown to love the home and away uniforms with many memories tied to them. To go ahead and make changes to that is inconsiderate and wrong. The "B" should always be the primary logo of the boston redsox. The hanging sox is ok for an arm patch or on the back of a hat..but should never replace the "B".

  1. It appears these changes are a midpoint between the Sox going 100% Disney on us and tradition. I was not a fan of the 80s road jerseys and the Sox have won 2 World Series while wearing the 2008 road uniforms. I can live with the road jerseys. I have strong distate for the Disney-leaning alternate cap but thank heaven that "Wally" is not on the hat or uniform. I bet we can expect Wall to make an appearance on hats and uniforms sometime in 2012.

  1. This hat is embarrassing!!
The old greys from the 80's look awesome with the updated fit to the clothes and new helmets so I really like the grey. The rest is garbage! The one thing I do really hate is the use of names on the back, I really don't think we need them. It's what I really like about teams like the Stankees. The Sox should only have numbers on the back. Millions of people know who these guys are by even their first names and would be just as proud without the name of their fav. player if they are real baseball fans.
It was a shame to see them put the names on the back of the green shirts @ home. Then what really pissed me off was the names put on the old timers jerseys while the old players were out on the field in their old home jerseys. THAT SHOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW! That really made me sick! You know who pushes for this? Larry does, he mentioned in a pregame show that him and his wife would like to see names on the back of the home jerseys but realize the tradition is to not have them there but seemed not to like this????????????

This is my first post, can we post photoshopped images here of what we would like to see? Thanks.....

  1. Sox fan since the late '60s here, and I never liked the red/grey road uniforms -- in fact, the whole RED RED RED emphasis of the last few years just doesn't look right. The new road uniforms are a step in the right direction. Now let's go back to navy undershirts for all uniforms, and the blue-white-red stirrups. And get rid of the names on back, please -- they make the back of the shirt look much too crowded.

Posted by lizmcl December 15, 08 06:57 PM
  1. This is why the Red Sox will never be as classy as the Yankees. Where's the tradition in adopting an ugly uniform from the '80's? There is a lot to be said in staying with the traditional uniforms. Only a handful of teams have maintained their look. How a team with such a storied history could do this just to sell more merchandise is almost criminal. Horrible...

  1. Players will come and go over the years, but the uniform design of a classic team should not. The uniform is what represents the continuity of the Red Sox franchise, the one constant we see on the field that links this current team back to the ones our parents and grandparents supported. So I have mixed feeling about the new road grays. They will look more like the one the Red Sox wore for around 50 years total, and for that I don't mind them (and I do kinda like how they are more simple, basic and old school than any other team's) but as others have noted the red script road jerseys have been the road jersey for almost 20 years now and 2 World Series titles. They were on their way to being just as classic, if not more so due to the success they represent. The change was unnecessary. I dislike all "alternate" jerseys and wish those would just go away. But the biggest travesty is that STUPID hanging socks hat, even if it is an "alternate" and (I pray) wont be worn very often. Can you picture Ted Williams wearing one of those? Ridiculous. I bet Johnny Pesky is trying to keep his mouth shut on that one...

Dirt Dogs and yanks fans are getting everyone up in a lather. Relax and have a great Christmas. The Yanks are trying to buy a WS again and are heading the same direction as the past 8 years. 1. I think Sox management should have stopped at the new primary road uniform. I think it was wise to add the Hanging Sox logo to the jersey sleeve and I love the 50's-60's and 80's blue & gray, however I don't want to see the caps changed either. Leave the "B" where it is. Even the V-Necked "Red Caps" retained the "B". The Sox on the cap look like kids' wear. I sincerely hope the front office at Yawkey Way will be inundated with hate mail about this. I also think alternate uniforms, with the exception of the occasional green, are ridiculous. Just like a previous poster claimed, now we get to look like every other basement-dweller team with nineteen different unis on any given summer night.

  1. I'm not sure why the article refers to the road jersies worn in the 1980s. The gray road BOSTON shirts go back to 1937, with only a break between 1972 and 1978 when the horrid double-knit blouses were worn home and away. The old style was restored in 1978 and lasted until 1990 when the red lettered shirts with the names on the back were adopted when a uniform company offered to foot the bill. I've long awaited the restoration of the traditional uniform even if the names are being retained on the back. The red letters looked untraditional. But if "Sweet Caroline" is now considered tradition, then I can see why some young fans don't get the tradition of the gray shirts, which are much more "Red Sox."

The hanging Sox is really bad. I like having it as an alternative look, but to wear it on the field. Ugh...

  1. I think that overall there are more disagreement from fans including me. I agree to those disagreements because they have good reasons. 1) The Sox in 80's were not so good in the field. I do not see why The Sox want to “turn back the clock” to 80's. What do we want to remember? 2) I do not like many things about The Yanks but one big jealousy I have to them is their "good tradition" on and off the field. Not only they won a lot but also they know how to keep the tradition. They never change things if it works well. The Sox should do that too. We have been very good in recent years with white/grey/red uniforms with the hat with "B". I think we should keep them as "good tradition" down the road. 3) The design reflects the lack of consistency. There is too big contrast between home and road, main and alternative. I personally think The Sox should keep only two types of uniform: white/red home, grey/red road. I don't see a point having several uniforms with different colors unless for merchandise sales purpose. Hat with "hanging sox" logo? Please.................

Posted by musphile December 28, 08 12:40 PM
  1. I can see the reason to update a uniform, but believe management made a mistake in changing the logo from the classic "B" to the "Hanging Socks" just floating there by themselves. 1. Notice how they do this after announcing that they will not raise ticket prices for the first time in years? They have to get that extra revenue from somewhere right? The Sox ownership has done a great job winning 2 World Series and being a model organization, but this is just dumb.

  1. I am disappointed they didn't use the old block lettering for the road grays. As far as the new hats, I think they're terrible. The logo looks like laundry.

  1. This is really pathetic,, I hate teams that change their uniforms. Say what you will about the Yankees, the Yankees should be ashamed of themselves and had no reason to build a new Stadium, but at least they never change their uniforms.

Baseball is all about TRADITION! It is never going to be the NFL or NBA so get over it already! Those other sports I just mentioned are more popular now just because they are. The MLB and it's teams are not going to get more attention or ticket sales because of something like this!

The fans who still love Baseball and bring their kids to the games and pass it all on to their kids, are fans because of the old game of Baseball. They stay fans because of the TRADITION!
When are these idiots going to really get why they are chasing fans away instead of keeping them??

Good move RedSox, go ahead and change your uniforms now your even more stupid than the Yankees and their new disgusting stadium like I said before, at least the Yankees keep the tradition going by never changing thier uniforms.

Now you shouldn't feel like your doing anything wrong and against your fans tradition when you tear down Fenway for some cheezy new ballpark.

What a joke! Now your the Mets or Padres....lmao!

  1. The jerseys are OK, but the hanging sox only look good on children. They are fine for commercial use, the the Sox should keep the traditional B as their official logo. Much more professional.

Posted by Britt January 14, 09 11:45 AM
  1. No one gets it, I work in the industry. MLB mandated EVERY team change there unforms this year. Every team changed.
The jerseys arent available until 1/15/09.So this Christmas sales were $0
The RedSox get a percent off total industry MLB jersey liscence sales not their own brand.
This is an MLB deal, nothing more

  1. Hey everybody calm down.. REALLY!!!!!!! didn't realize the color of unis or hats made a team a winning team........ Lets look at the dreaded nny, when was the last time they won a WS title? Same uniis folks!!! The moves the Sox made and the inflated money they didn't spend I'm cool with that.. no player is worth 161 million dollars for 8 years, there is a recession going on, if the "NATION" wants to change unis great change is good, although I will say I don't care for the hanging sox logo but hey marketing is marketing. People look at comment 392, with the exception of not getting Teixeira he hit the nail on the head. One last thought, a player is only as good as the team as a whole.

  1. One of the things that make the SOX so special is that "they travel to the beat of a different drum". If you start to change now, then you have already lost.
The SOX have the most loyal fans in sports, listen to us, don't change the uniforms.

Posted by Lee Johnson January 21, 09 10:30 AM
  1. You guys who are begging for tradition are idiots. The road uniform has ALWAYS been gray, and new colors are the way the always WERE. If anything, this is a RETURN to tradition. Look it up... the hanging Sox had been used, at least in part, as the PRIMARY logo from 1908-1978.

    Morons.

  1. Uhhh I dont like the new uniforms. I mean the home ones are okayy but the road uniform looks like the yankees almost except they say Boston. The hats are not that bad but they arnt that goos either. Oh well I guess there is nothing we can do about it. But serously?!?!? It looks like the friggin Yankees!!!

  1. When I first saw the details of the new uni's and logos, I thought I was in the minority. But after reading the posted comments, I see that I'm in the majority. Road uni's are BORING!!!!!! And the hanging socks logo is supposed to be equivalent to the Nike swoosh??? I don't think so. I've seen that on souvenir hats for years and alyways thought they were awful.
I understand the economics, but make changes with the souvenirs, NOT the real thing!!!!

  1. Of the 500 previous posters who have a problem with the new uniform changes, how many of you will root against the Red Sox in 2009 just because of how they dress? Seriously, gain some perspective and support your team, because uniforms have absolutely NO impact on a team's performance.

They are so jealous of the most respected and loved Professional Sports franchise in history, the 26 time, World Series Champions, the New York Yankees, and their brand new $1.5 Billion Stadium, that is even greater, and more important to human history than the Roman Coliseum.

  1. The new is terrible. Using the 'hanging sox' logo is strange. The BOSTON RED Soxes are idenitfied by the B. The hanging soxes maybe cute but the traditional red B represent the Red Soxes. May have to go to the Yankees for traditional pin stripes.
Sorry a change was made. Maybe in 30 years we'll change back.

  1. The hanging socks look good on T-shirts and keychains and window stickers for your car but they look goofy on the hat. The new road jersey looks but I do not like the hanging sox on the hat. I know its just alternate but just stick with the B.

  1. The hanging sox cap is the absolute WORST, I don't care if it's only worn once a year. It's a completely ridiculous idea to put a PICTURE of one piece of clothing on another piece of clothing at the opposite end of the body from where it should be. And the article of clothing represented can't even be seen on the players where it SHOULD be! This is one of the stupidest combinations of nickname and uniform in sports. Actually the White Sox are even more retarded as I think their uniform includes black socks.
How about if they decided to call the team the "Red Pants" back in 1905 or whatever. This team would wear white or grey pants, and have a picture of red pants on their hats. Idiots! Here's an idea....maybe have the pants short enough so we can see the players are actually wearing red socks! What a concept!

For that matter, the Patriots should bring back their 1976-style uniforms. Those were the BEST-looking uniforms in NFL history.

  1. In 1997 (?), the Sox pushed alternate hats. There was a white one and a red one (each kept the traditional "B") that the team wore in a handful of games. They didn't sell and lasted only one year. Hopefully, these jerseys and hats wind up in Africa with the Patriots "Perfect Season" Championship T-shirts!

I remember when they got rid of the 80s road unis for the red numbered ones. I was psyched. I LOVED those (still do). Why would you EVER change the unis other than for the almighty dollar? Way to go guys! Marketing geniuses!

Storied franchises do NOT need alternate jerseys. The name sells itself, not the jersey. The Yankees, Packers, Bears, and Canadiens do not stoop to alternative jerseys. I hate to not include the Celtics, but even they, with those lame, lighter green with black letter jerseys, jumped into those sewer infested waters (although I love the St Patrick's day jersey--the ones with the gold numbers--, which they only wear during the week of St Patrick's day. They are the Celtics after all!).

I'm all for commemorative/throwback jerseys for one game (idea--why not wear the 1975 jersey for one game. 75 was Rice's rookie year and he is going to the HOF this year), but not alternate jerseys. Bad idea. Period.

Glad the Bruins got rid of those yellow jerseys too.

  1. I agree totally with comment person #519. I had the same New York feeling looking at the uniforms. Next they will take their names off the back of the shirt on away games, Yankees style.

Why fix what isn' t broke.

  1. Among the very few things I respect about the Yankees is that they never mess with their jerseys and they don't wear alternates. Let the Royals change their jerseys every year, the champs stay the same. The alternates look like slow pitch softball uniforms and the hanging sox hats look trashy. Please keep what class is left in our uniforms and drop the alternate aways and hats and never change anything again. As for me I will keep my old away to prove that I was a fan before we started winning.

  1. To #519 and #520:

The new road uniforms are very close to what the SOX wore prior to the late 1980s. The Yankee's and Red Sox' road uniforms were always very similar, gray uniforms with dark blue lettering. In fact, the ONLY real differences between them historically was that the Red Sox uniforms said BOSTON on the front, and they had RED SOCKS. The Yankee's had BLUE SOCKS. The names on the jersey's were new in the late 1980s, the Red Sox never had that before. Today, we have uniforms which look almost EXACTLY like the Yankee's uniforms including the BLUE SOCKS. Somebody really blew that one. I'd be satisfied with them if they went back to the RED SOCKS, like our name...

  1. Whatever happened to the baseball socks as part of the standard uniform? It seems when I grew up and not so long ago that the socks of a baseball uniform were always visible. I believe that it was manditory for players to represent the uniform completely. Being a traditionalist, I feel that the socks of a uniform should be visible at all times and not hidden as they are by players today.. Bring back the socks in the baseball uniform. Stop wearing the silly looking pajama type uniforms. This is baseball not a slumber party... Yikessss.......

  1. The funny thing is, I first saw these uniforms while playing MLB 2K9. I thought the developers just forgot to put the red on the gray uniforms. I realized that it was not a mistake at all when the season started. Awful uniforms. Just awful.

Posted by gman April 19, 09 10:55 PM
  1. These road unis are awful. I agree totally with those who say that the primary road jerseys only conjure up bad memories of the eighties. Who needs that again? But, at the very least , those uniforms featured RED socks! What is with these dark blue (black) socks? Hideous.
I haven't seen the alternate road jerseys or caps yet but, as I see it, the sox cap is a classic right up there with the Yankees, Dodgers, and Tigers. Don't mess with perfection!

Posted by nashsox April 21, 09 12:24 PM
  1. As a lifelong Detroit Tiger fan but an American League fan nonetheless, I think everyone remembers when our Detroit Tigers had that stupid D with the Tiger coming out of it. Everyone hated it in Detroit and we returned to our classic road uniforms worn in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Our Home uniform like the Yankees and the Red Sox is sacred and should not be tampered with. The Red Sox have had beautiful road uniforms the past several years with the Red. Why on earth would they change it? Why?!!!! Your navy on grey uniforms are an attempt to look like the Yankees, but the Red Sox do NOT have a white logo on the hat. Keep the roadies that you have and bring don't get rid of the red lettering road uniforms.

Otherwise choices are good, plain "B" the best.

  1. Well.........they're O.K. Changing the old road jerseys 2 the classic is all right, but why, why, why, WHY! change the hat. NO, NO, NO, NO!!!! The "B" is needed. It's like they've lost their identity. And the new "seconary" Circle logo?!?!??!?!? You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! Oh well, they made the changes, but they do look better while they play. But it kinda stinks that they changed the "good luck" jerseys. They DID win, I dunno, TWO World Series in them!! Oh well. Ya know what, they'll become just normal jerseys soon.

As I got older I worked in the Prison in Somers, CT and we used to alternate between Yankee and Sox games. Later on I move to Chicago and one of the guys I worked with and I used to to go to Comiskey Park in Chi Town where I took my life in my hands routing for the Red Sox when they were in town. Later when I moved to California I routed for the Red Sox at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Also somewhat risky.
