Report: Mets make Lowe $36m offer

Posted by Staff December 31, 2008 09:45 AM

The Mets offered free agent righthander Derek Lowe a three-year contract for about $36 million yesterday, according to a report in the New York Times citing people who have been briefed on the discussions.

Agent Scott Boras would not comment about the Mets' offer to Lowe. But he said, "Obviously, we've taken offers from a number of teams." Boras also said he was still talking to teams and was in the process of establishing Lowe's value. Lowe is believed to be seeking a five-year, $90 million deal

  1. Okay Theo is smarter than I am. But since it seems apparent that Lowe would prefer the Red Sox how can we not match the Mets offer? Even after Penny who is certainly a health ? I'd still go after Lowe at that price. I know the Red Sox don't want to go 4 years and I don't blame them, but 3/36? Seems like a no-brainer.

  1. If that is the best offer, the Red Sox should offer more and bring him back.

  1. Maybe Boras can get Lowe signed to the same team that takes Manny for a foolish amount of money. He can throw in Varitek too. Zito money for Lowe, Rodrigues money for Manny, Posada money for Varitek. What a shame they all believed in him.

Keeping in mind, of course, that ONE is "a number".
