Report: Red Sox close to deal for Penny

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff December 28, 2008 06:19 PM

According to Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal, who cited an unnamed major league source, the Red Sox and free-agent righthanded starting pitcher Brad Penny are close to agreeing on a one-year deal.

The two sides are still working out language of the contract, Ronsethal reported, and Penny would still have to take a physical.

The 29-year-old Penny is coming off an injury-plagued season for the Dodgers, during which he made just 17 starts and posted a 6.27 ERA. He was shut down in September with a sore throwing shoulder. In 2007, Penny went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA for the Dodgers. Over his nine-year career, Penny is 94-75 with a 4.06 ERA.

  1. I still don't know why the Sox aren't going after Sheets. Same injury history as Penny, but better overall pitcher.

  1. NO
I'd much rather have John Smoltz instead of Brad Penny...

Too little too late Theo unless you're doing this so we can trade some of our young pitchers for catching.

  1. i hope the umpire can catch.

  1. Penny isn't 29, he'll be 31 in May

  1. This is cheap and bad signing. It is exactly what I expected from the cheap sox. The better signing would have been ben sheets. At least with sheets you had a pitcher coming off a fairly healthy season. This is a typical theo epstein reach.

  1. This does not make up for losing Teixeria or for the 11-5 Pats missing the playoffs.

  1. Rosenthal also repeatedly reported we were close to signing Tex, so take this with a grain of salt...

  1. No. Please no. This guy is a permanent fixture on the DL.

    No no no.

    Wow. WHAT are they thinking?

  1. Has GM gone insane this is the worst move yet? He is not a proven winner always gets injured.

  1. Looks like the Patriot's approach--take the broken and hope for a miracle. John Henry only has pennies to spend after the stock market crash.

  1. Oh cool
another matt clement. how long before this guy gets run out of town and/or beaned upside the head. Better yet, how long before his arm gets injured from too many cream puffs.

Was pavano's asking price too high?

  1. this would be a great signing low key but if healthy this kid is a horse

  1. Yes! This signing really makes up for the fact that the Yankees have signed THREE ALL-STARS!!! Woo hoo!

  1. I like this move as long as it isn't for some ridiculous amount of money.

  1. Wow! Big deal Theo, Brad Penny another wash up ... Great moves this off season; you missed out on signing the Big Unit he went to the Giants ....

  1. Great News. If Penny has recovered from his shoulder issues, he is a potential 4th Ace in this rotation, though the AL East will be a learning experience for him. This will probably be a short term contract, based on his health, so at age 29 he has much to prove in order to get back to being a big money star. Everyone wins. Rumor has it the Sox are also looking at Sheets. Penny + Sheets + Shoppach + Kottaras will cost less than Teixeira, produce 30-35HR AND 30+wins, while giving Buchholz, Bowden, Tazawa, Hagadone a chance to properly mature in MiLB. Now that's value.

  1. Why does it seem like we always sign someone who has had an
injury plagued season?? Believe it or not there are free agents who
are healthy!! Maybe it's just me... I don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. This is pretty interesting - compare Brad Penny's career stats with A.J. Burnett (W/L, ERA, IP, K, BB)

    Burnett: 87-76, 3.81,1376, 1278, 568

    Penney 94-75, 4.06 1460, 1032, 475

I don't know - not much of a big difference. Sounds like a potentially very good move for the Red Sox if he stays healthy.

  1. Who cares, the guy is a mediocre National League pitcher at best. Gives them a bit of depth in pitching, if they get 150 innings out of this guy it will be a miracle.

  1. 29? I thought Penny was like 50. I'll take him though.

  1. Is Brad Penny going to hit cleanup for the sox????

  1. Attention Theo Epstein. I live in LA and work with the public assembly fire marshal who also works Dodger games and the Playboy mansion. He says there were several times this year here Penny was hanging out at the mansion rather than rehabbing or watching the team play home games. I am a big Red Sox fan and I am saying stay away from Penny. He was a lousy teammate in LA and I would not want him on my team. Look into these issues before contracting him. Penny is a big jerk.

  1. I'm not sold that Brad Penny will be 100% healthy. But he's worth taking a rider on.

  1. awesome.. maybe we can sign Sammy Sosa too. What a joke of an offseason. I wont be wasting my money to see them at fenway this year...

  1. This year's Bartolo Colon? I like the philosophy that you can never have enough pitchers. Hope he comes at a good price.

  1. A career NL pitcher, this is Colon 2009. How about making a deal for a catcher? They nered to do more after botching the Tex negotiations.

Posted by Curse of Shank December 28, 08 08:26 PM
  1. We know how good Ken Rosenthal's source is, remember Mark Teitiera's deal!

Posted by Joe King December 28, 08 09:51 PM
  1. This is a great signing. Penny ,30, is a year younger than Burnett. They both have very similar careers thus far. Both career numbers are extremely close. These negative comments are from people who are impressed by all the over-hype and money that Burnett got. Why? Penny gets to pal around with a few of his old World Series Champion mates from Florida and get help from our pitching coach. It's a one year $5m-$8m deal... so even if he sucks we don't lose out on too much because we're probably gonna bring up Buchholz in the near future anyway. Let's hope we wind-up paying him the $8m! That would still be a gigantic bargain compared to what all these other pitchers want. Sorry it won't make front page though.

  1. Oh sheets - you got the bad penny. How lowe will the Sux go? ..hahahahahahahahahahah. I hear he can catch too. The Bard and Penny - wow the World Series is in the bag. You sure this Epstein isn't from Welcome Back Kotter? hahahahahahahahahahahahahah ......
