Reports: Sox in Texas meeting on Teixeira

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff December 18, 2008 06:34 PM

If the latest reports are correct, the Mark Teixeira saga may be nearing a conclusion.

Channel 5 (WCVB-TV) reported that Red Sox owner John Henry, team president Larry Lucchino, and GM Theo Epstein were in Texas tonight to meet with Mark Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, in an attempt to finish a deal for the free-agent first baseman.

According to Channel 5's Mike Lynch, who cited unnamed sources, the Red Sox were offering an eight-year, $184 million contract (average annual value -- $23 million) and were hopeful they could wrap up a deal tonight or tomorrow morning.

The Globe's Adam Kilgore confirmed that Boras was in Dallas tonight. We are currently trying to confirm the rest of the information.

Channel 4 (WBZ-TV) later reported the Sox were meeting with the Teixeira camp tonight, though he wrote that the Sox did not expect anything "conclusive" to come out of the meeting. He did not cite a source for that information.

Channel 25 (WFXT-TV) reported tonight that the face-to-face meeting was Boston's idea. An unnamed source told Channel 25's Butch Stearns that the Sox requested the meeting to make sure Teixeira knew for sure how the team felt about him. Stearns wrote "the Red Sox feel like, that in the past, Boras has not always accurately expressed to some of his former clients, how the Sox felt about those players. Or that some of the Sox feelings have been lost in translation. So in this situation, the Sox want to make sure that Teixiera is 100 % clear about how the team feels about him, and again they wanted to do this face to face."

ESPN's Peter Gammons and Buster Olney reported that, according to major league sources, the Red Sox had "taken strides" toward competing a deal for Teixeira to the point where face-to-face talks between the Sox and Boras were possible tonight.

Earlier this evening it was still unclear whether Teixeira, who is believed to have a home in Texas, would attend tonight's reported meeting.

  1. Ridiculous money; nobody is worth that. Baseball players and agents as well as owners are all GREEDY at the expense of the fans. The Sox will not get any of my hard earnerd $$$$ Baseball fans are fools to support this type of action. I'll take the beach anyday over the GREED of baseball.

  1. Wow! It could happen tonight! I hope that Manny stays with the Dodgers. That would be horrible if he goes to the Yankees! I miss my boy Manny and I think he is going to have a monster year, so hopefully he will have it with the Dodgers. With Boston signing Tex, we will be fine again!!

  1. It is called free market economy...you are worth what people are willing to pay you, no more, no less. I suppose you are going to stop going to movies as well, since many actors/directors make more than that. Given the record Fenway sell out streak, I doubt your hard earned $$$ will be missed. I just feel bad for Mikey Lowell if this signing goes through. That is my only regret.

  1. Honestly, I am tired of reading whiny fans complaining about the money that is going to be offered toTexeria.... as if any of them would turn it down because of the economy. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Hey Boston, you want one of the top hitters in the majors you got to cough up a top deal. The owners wouldn't pay out this money if they weren't getting a substantial return on their investment.... so what, let ownership make all the money and not the star who is making it for them? And getting upset with an agent for wanting to make money is like getting mad at a rabid dog for biting you.... Signhihim!!!Theo!Theo...you we

  1. Foolish. The offensive difference between Lowell and Texiera isn't $13M/yr.
These types of contracts can ruin teams and team chemistry. I love the player, but honestly, this is ridiculous.

  1. I really like the idea of having Teixeira he will be key hitting behind Ortiz. I am not at all happy with the way Mike Lowell is being pushed aside like he has done nothing for the sox. Mike Lowell risked having a more serious problem with his hip that would have effected him for the rest of his life to try to help the team win a championship. People like Mike Lowell should not be pushed aside. I hope Theo and baseball operations informed him that they were going to go after Tex and asked Mikey if he would be willing to play shortstop if Tex signs here. That way the sox wouldn't have to include Youk in a deal for Jake Peavy. How about Jed Lowrie and Clay Bucholtz for Peavy

Posted by Jstetz December 18, 08 07:22 PM
  1. players are worth that $ b/c the market says so. There skill is high in demand at an extremely low supply. For example, anyone can do business, you can learn it. Not everyone can throw 90mph or hit a ball 450 feet, not matter how hard you try. So, baseball players have a skill very few have, which gets them the $ they deserve. Deal with it SM!

Posted by kmac December 18, 08 07:26 PM
  1. mike nealis - He wants to win. So, Mike please tell my why he would go to Baltimore? the Red Sox have been to the post season 5 out of the last 6 years with two world series. What about the birds?

As an aside, I cannot believe Boras is getting this many good clients. Think about. He advised A-Rod to opt out in NY only to find out no one was willing to create a bidding war for his servies and A-Rod had to go back to NY with his tale between his legs and take about the same money. This year, Boras advises Manny to be more of an idiot and not play in Boston to get out of those options - which Boras did not negotiate and did not stand to benefit from. The Sox trade him to LA and look...now we hear than Manny is contempating retirement because there is no one out there willing to pay him the $25M that Boras promised him. Someone please tell these players that Boras is an idiot. If I was Jacoby or a young player, I would stay away from him. Boras has done fine by M Texeria, but this player understands the business better than his other clients. Don't sign with Boras...he is only looking out for himself. MLB should investigate Manny and A-Rod and punish Boras in some manner.

  1. I'm thinking JD in center,Tex in left and Jason in right with Jacoby as 4th. Keep Lowell at 3rd and Youk at first. If we can put up with Manny in left for all those years Tex can not possibly be any worse. Pretty good line-up

Posted by FLJoe December 18, 08 07:42 PM
  1. I don't blaim Teixeira for getting what he can. Look what happens to guy to give a home town discount. Look what happened to Arroyo and seems to be about to happen to Lowell. Dustin better live up to his fast start or he'll be next. I don't know how many times they have to say it, baseball is a business. It's not like they pretend its not.

    Posted by Lhop54 December 18, 08 07:44 PM
  1. We need a major clean-up guy like Manny. And he is a major defensive plus at first. That means Youk will be moved to 3rd, and Lowell will have 2 years on his contract. So he will be used sporadically as his hip heals.

Posted by Whiskey December 18, 08 07:50 PM
  1. Jstetz, what are you smoking? Lowell has not even played one game in the majors at SS and a grand total of 12 in the minors. He would be worse than Lugo fielding that position. Why would the Padres give up Peavy for only Buccholz and Lowrie after being offered more by NL teams only to turn down those offers? If they can't get 70 cents on the dollar for Lowell, keep him. There is no guarantee that he and Ortiz are healthy. They will do some sort of rotation with Lowell, Ortiz, and Youkilis until they are proven healthy and maybe deal one when a team needs help due to an injury or at the All Star break.

  1. Merry Christmas Red Sox Nation, signing Mark Texeira is a luxury the Red Sox can afford. Tex will fill Manny's void and makeOrtiz, Bay and Drew better hitters! To SM, don't watch or listen to major league baseball if you're so offended by greedy agents, players or owners. You think Jay Leno is worth $30 Million a year? Watch the tonight show instead.

  1. I'm a 50-year Sox fan and love the fact we've, also that we're in a position to continue to win. Having said that, I also believe MLB needs a salary cap, under which the Sox...with Theo remaining as GM...would continue to shine. We greedy Sox fans don't care about that other teams can't afford Texeira, and rightly so, because we want to win. Perfectly understandable, except...how would you feel if you lived in KC or Milwaukee, smaller markets who just can't match what Sox and Yanks pay players? From both a fairness and a competitive viewpoint, what MLB has now is a lousy system. Implement a cap, like the NFL and NHL have. Equity = everyone has a better shot of winning a championship.

SO REALLY 22-23 MILL NOW ISNT THAT MUCH. ITS NICE TO SEE AN OWNERSHIP PUT THE MONEY THEY MAKE BACK INTO A TEAM. THATS WHY I LOVE THE SOX

  1. Don't want him, don't need him. Way too much money and years for someone who hasn't proved they can play in Boston. We have a first baseman who has proven himself. We have a third baseman for the next 3 years, and if he can't last that long, we can afford to get someone that has a year or 2 left on a contract and not be stuck with someone for a crazy amount of money!!!!

This seems crazy - but on second thought - could one of the guys move to the outfield? Left field is where the defensive liabilities are not going to hurt the Sox as much. Could a healthy Lowell play there? Probably smarter to trade him for good pitching - but Lowell is still a pretty good bat.

Stop of just thinking 2009, think 2009-2016, a stud for least 5-6 likeluyy all of this deal. Anchors lineup and is now face of the Sox.

  1. RE: I thought he was an "east coast guy"... what's he doing in Texas?

Teixeira lives in Texas in the off season (moved there when he played for the Rangers), Boras is based in L.A. The fact that our GM, President & Owner are going to Texas is a very good indication that they are sitting down with Mark and Scott to get the deal done. Not a social call, at all.

All goes well, we have a great sign.

  1. These people that cry about the money kill me. This is almost a wash. Manny was making 20 Mil a year, Tex will be getting an extra 3 Mils, so with Manny's money off the books this will cost the Sox 3 Mil to do. Manny was signed 8 years ago, if you figure in 8 years worth of inflation, it's just about a wash. Why wouldn't you pick him up? In the long run, Manny has done us all a favor, he helped us win 2 world series then helped us get younger.

Posted by bosoxfannj December 18, 08 09:40 PM
  1. Sign him up, then go to work on D. Lowe.
I just don't see the need to trade Lowell. We could rotate Teixeira, Youk, Lowell, and Papi at 1B, 3B and DH, with occasional innings in the outfield for Youk and others from time to time. Papi and Lowell are getting long in the tooth and both are coming off injuries, so maybe a day off every 4-5 days would increase their durability.
After all it is only money!!

Posted by Parky in PA December 18, 08 09:47 PM
  1. dkelly- Of the players you mentioned, Mike Lowell is one I would definitely NOT consider for left field. Not because he couldn't learn the position, but because he is not only the best defensive third baseman on the team, but IMO the best they have ever had, at least in my lifetime (61 years). Youk got moved to first because of Lowell's D. How many of you know that Mike Lowell has the highest fielding percentage among major league third baseman ALL-TIME, ahead of Brooks Robinson, Mike Schmidt and everyone else. This is not to mention his clutch offense, great leadership, professionalism, etc.

  1. What happens to #1 prospect Lars Anderson? 6-4, 210 first baseman with unlimited power potential & compared to Justin Morneau. Plus under sox control for 6 years. Sox prospects generally work out recently. See Pedroia, Youkillis, Ellsbury, & Lester.

You might have a point about mikey not having the range at short but, I think he is a better defensive option at that positon than Lugo. I have been watching the Sox since 86 and only Rentereck was worse at short than Lugo but, at least he hit above .230. If we don't move Lowell to short trade Youk, Bucholtz and Bowden for Jake Peavy and a catching prospect. Youk might head to Cincy via free agency after 2010 Peavy is signed through 2014.
    Rotation

  1. "They can pay as much as they want, but they are going to have a tough time keeping their sellout streak going next year. Let's face it, the economy free fall won't hit bottom until the summer, right when the sox are going to be in 3rd place behind the yankees and rays. sad but maybe true."

Dude, have you even been to a Sox game? Not gonna happen. The Sox are probably one of the few organizations that are recession-proof. The fact that Fenway has one of the smaller capacities in the league, to go along with one of the greatest demand for tickets in pro sports, just means that the trend will continue.

  1. Major movie actors/actresses get 20 mil and up PER PICTURE. Maybe it's all crazy, but we still need to have perspective.

  1. Let Boras rot in Hell where he belongs. The Sox don't need Texeira to win the East. The Yankees just blew big money on a pitcher for 6 years who will be over 300 pounds in two and another 80 or so on a guy who can only pitch in contract years. They are old everywhere including their closer. The Yanks are dead in the water. Our "boy" Manny will go back to being Manny as soon as he signs his deal. Who can he play the outfield for?

  1. Just think, for about the same money, you get a well rounded person with the same numbers versus a village idiot like Manny the man child. What's not to like.

    Go for it.

  1. Looks like Boston fans can no longer complain about A-Rod's contract, if you give this type of money to a guy who has only been to 1 all star game and easily 5 1st basemen right now better than him

  1. so does this mean the deal is off?

"Red Sox owner just e-mailed several media members with a stunning twist in the team's pursuit of Mark Teixeira. "We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

  1. All sports leagues are out of control. Players, owners and agents are all so greedy. The heck with the fan, the poor guy who can nolonger afford to take his family to any games. I used to really enjoy sports. And I don't begrude an athlete making some good money. But when you price me and many others from going to games, I no longer root. I am just waiting for the day when all leagues crash and burn. And with the way the economy is, that day (God willing) wil be very soon.

  1. Just reported on fox 25 news. We are no longer in the running for him.

  1. "I thought he was an "east coast guy"... what's he doing in Texas?"

Texeira has a house outside Dallas, he did play for the Rangers until just recently.

Posted by Bill December 18, 08 11:08 PM
  1. If you think the Texeira deal is ridiculous, consider this: would you rather the Yankees got him?

As for Peavy - I have no use for a NL pitcher afraid to pitch in the AL. They can keep him.

  1. Big Tex is signing with a DC area team. Sorry, Sox fans!!

    Tomen8r

  1. We clearly know Tex is just about Money and i would hope he gets booed everytime he takes a at bat in fenway park if its tru that it was 184mill Let him rot for 200mill with the nationals or go with the O's and then since he's close to home he can always be home in october

  1. John Henry is a MORON!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by BOB December 18, 08 11:14 PM
  1. Cool! Personally, I cannot see spending $23m for Texiera. He'll probably have a few decent seasons (e.g. at/near 30HR mark; 100-1115 RBI's) and that's it. Just because he's the biggest fish this year, doesn't mean that the Sox need to commit for the next 8 years. Be patient.

Come to think of it, Mikey Lowell can put up these numbers. In addition, he's a gold glover on the other end.

  1. Where are the Sox going to sink all the money they saved by getting rid of Manny? This team lost to an expansion team in the playoffs last year. The Devil Rays, are you kidding me? Just sit back and let the Yankees acquire premium talent and do nothing. This is a total disgrace. The Boston Royals pinching pennies.

Posted by Eddie December 18, 08 11:21 PM
  1. Fox Sports is reporting the Sox have dropped out of the Texeira race. J. Henry sent an e-mail saying after seeing his other offers they can't compete. Can anyone confirm this sudden switch???

    Posted by Pbarb1 December 18, 08 11:26 PM
  1. :( :(
They aren't going to get him...
    What a letdown...

    No playoffs this year...
    O whell...

  1. Sox are "not a factor" for Tex. What's there next move? LOTS of money available now.....

    Posted by Markes018 December 18, 08 11:32 PM
  1. I live in LA and have gone to the Sox-Angels playoff games the last 2 years. Tex was killing us with the bat in the ALDS. We need him - but at worst we need him to be kept away from being back with the Angels or the Yankees.

What about pitching, though? We need a 4th big arm. What if Josh doesn't get his speed back? He loses 5 mph and goes from God to cannon fodder. Is Derek Lowe 2.0 good enough? Or do we - and I hate to say it - have to use Big Mikey as trade bait for a proven 4th starter?

  1. Sounds to me like Boras and Texeireia sat in the room, heard the Sox huge offer and then said, "That's really nice but we have a $200M offer from X and a 10 year deal from Y... so what are you going to do?" And Henry said, "Well, f that's what it comes down to for you Mark, best of luck, but we're going to get on the plane and go back to Beantown. Have a nice day."

Henry's statement was interesting in that he said "not a factor" which tells me that Boras is taking the Sox out of the mix and not the other way around. He called Boras' bluff. Let's see what happens in the next 48 hours.

  1. Too bad, but what comes next is of more interest. A couple of arms, one in the rotation and one in the pen will cost less and return as much--IF Mike Lowell returns healthy. If he does, he puts up Teixeira like numbers. If not, then the the Sox had better hope they get the rotation shored up.

As for Tek, I personally think the loss of Teixeira makes him less likely to come back unless the Sox can also swing a deal for a young, soon to be stud of a catcher. Otherwise, they need more from that position.

  1. nice badscience, I agree. I think Boras gave a # as a bluff. The Orioles, Angels, and Nationals don't have the $ to spend near $200 mil., The Sox do. Reports all week from baseball sources and GM's familiar with the negotiations had the Sox to land Tex, then today rumors we had the biggest offer. I seriously doubt the Sox brass flew all the way to Texas just to listen to what offers Tex has. I think there is much more to this, and a possible ploy by Henry. In Theo We Trust!
