Report: Sox make offer to Kawakami

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff December 12, 2008 09:29 PM

From the Globe's Daigo Fujiwara:

Nikkan Sports, one of Tokyo's biggest daily sports/entertainment newspapers, is reporting that Red Sox have offered Kenshin Kawakami a 3-year, $21-million deal.

The report appeared in Saturday morning's edition of Nikkan Sports.

Kawakami's agent Dan Evans reportedly said that he discussed his client with 28 teams and was quoted as saying, "It is now up to Kawakami." Nikkan notes that the Sox' offer seems to be higher than other teams.

Kawakami has a 112-72 career record with a 3.22 ERA in 11 years as a member of Chunichi Dragons. He won the Rookie of the Year in 1998 and the Central League MVP in 2004. Kawakami led the league in wins in 2004 and 2006, led the league with most strikeouts in 2006, and won the Sawamura Award (Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young) in 2004. His best pitch is a cut-fastball.

The Globe's Adam Kilgore wrote on Kawakami earlier this week.

You can check out Kawakami's stats on Fujiwara's website or, if you're fluent, check out Nikkan's report .

  1. We get someone that has never pitched a game in the major leagues for $7 million a year. This guy is 33 and if this report is correct he will be paided $1 million dollar more per year than dice-k?

  1. How's that $50 mil to open the door looking now? Matsuzaka/Okajima/Tazawa...now possibly Kawakami. Theo doesn't believe in the short term apparently...long view, baby. And anyone who thinks that's an insult can suck an egg. FIRST!

  1. I'd personally rather see that money spent on proven MLB talent, but Craig Shipley's scouting resume hasn't made me doubt too much about him so far.

  1. Matsuzaka made $8 million in 2008 and the same in 09 and 10. So Kawakami wouldn't be making $1 million more.
