Show me the money

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff December 23, 2008 01:08 PM

As the Mark Teixeira decision looms, here's what the switch-hitting first baseman might be thinking about:

League sources indicate the Washington Nationals and the Red Sox appear to be the finalists pending a last-minute offer from the Yankees -- always a possibility.

The Nationals are offering nine years at $180 million. The Red Sox have not appeared to change their offer of eight years at around $170 million.

You can see the Nationals are willing to give Teixeira an additional $10 million over the length of the deal, but the Red Sox' average annual value is about $1 million per year higher. This could obviously be changing by the minute, but that's where it appears to be at the moment.

Washington is closer to home. Boston is the better team.

We may have a decision by today.

  1. After Teixeira, who else can we afford? Need some bargain-basement steals here...

  1. If Tex takes the Nats offer, he'll end up like Arod, another great player without a ring.

  1. Go to Washington Tex!

  1. Go to the Nationals. I'd rather wait a year and get Pujols. Be better timing for the club and it's current players.

  1. If Teixeira does'nt accept Red Sox final offer theSox should sign Lowe to a two year deal with a third year option, pitching always wins and wait for Lars Anderson, sign a reserve O.F. with some pop and they'll be fine.

  1. Yankees will get him last minute. He idolized Don Mattingly and his dad played VS Bucky Dent. Guy is Yankee material.

  1. Ok Mark teixeira common if you pick the Nationals you must be crazy they are just giving you 1 more year and 10 more million while the red sox might give you 5 or 6 rings maybe 2 or 3 mvps and a chance to win every day....

  1. Lars will play if he shows he is an MLB player. But it will be as a DH when Ortiz leaves. Or he might bring a star player in a trade. Always a possibility. Don't overhype prospects. Look what happened with Clay.

  1. Please...........get it overwith and get on with the more pressing matters. I'm tired of this going back and forth. You know the Yankees are going to throw a monkey wrench and then we will start all over again. Use the money to acquire a catcher and Jake Peavy. (if we can). I'm happy to keep Mike Lowell around. You would Teixeira is the 2nd coming of Christ.

  1. All this money for what? Sign Youk for 5 years, send Tex to the Nationals, and offer free hot dogs at games for bleacher bums!

  1. "Yankees will get him last minute"

  1. I agree with Mindsmack...I'm willing to bet something's brewing in NY. Brothers Grim Hank and Hal would just LOVE to stick it to the Sox.

In response to comment#4, ARE YOU HIGH??? There's NO WAY the Sox will pay him the salary that he will command. He'll either stay with the Cardinals for less money (DOUBTFUL) or be overpaid and become a Yankee.

  1. Let the Yankee's get him, so he can get hurt and be a lemon like almost every free agent they ever sign, with the exception of A-Rod, who always produces and still they boo the shit out of him. His numbers dwarf Jeter's, but that boy gets a free pass somehow. C.C. and Burnett will come down with arm trouble like Kevin Brown and Carl Pavano before them, and whomever they bring in will rise to mediocrity like Johnny Damon and the fat guy that came over from Philadelphia, I cant even remember his name.
